αρπάζω

She knew not what she'd gotten herself into, but she could make a few guesses. She knew at once she was somewhere else — somewhere not of this world. She knew it when she first beheld the foyer, and she knew it when she strode up those first steps and touched painted nails to one of the great poles supporting the enormous enclosure. She knew it by the thrum of energy, by the timelessness of the place. And, perhaps most assuredly, she knew it by the unfamiliarity of the language printed below portraits. αρπάζω failed to recognize the script.

Attention drawn, αρπάζω passed through the groups of people like they were smoke and party favors. She did not stay to eavesdrop on others' whimsical dialogue, nor did she engage in any herself. Her focus was precisely what would blend her real life and this otherworldly life together , what would bridge them, in so many words beneath a portrait frame.

Even through the gilded face veil, cumbersome as it was, she could make out the importance of such a new discovery. Already she could have the basics if she knew, for certain, the individual portrayed in the image. There she stood, before one of the great eight portraits, where she beheld one of the many faces of Chauvet.

La Cadenza

She had just gotten to the place she liked to change back after a night of patrolling... She had found an out of the way spot with a good place to stash her belongings she did not want to disappear while she Powered Up, and wanted available.

She was about to put her bag into the spot she liked to set it down on when she heard a chiming sound in it. She looked around, suspiciously, then peeked inside. It was that odd invitation, and the mask... They had changed, though, and she gave a soft ooo of interest. The last two strange events she had been involved in had been less then pleasant, at least to a degree. This one, she thought, might have no fighting... She hoped not, at least, because she would like a pleasant evening for once.

She considered powering down, but decided that, just in case, she would stay this way for tonight. She was not sure what would happen, but she gripped her bag and reached in, touching the invite... And was taken somewhere else. She was not sure where, exactly, she was but she LIKED it. She looked around... And then down, realizing she was wearing her costume she had picked out for the event. She blinked, and reached up to touch her face... And discovered the mask was there.

She was DELIGHTED, because this was already seeming to be the start of a great time.

The Red Prince

Ey knew that name. That association. Ey never liked it, never enjoyed the taste of its foreignness, its austerity, on eir tongue. Never liked the way it sounded to eir ears. Never relished the moments when Castor would use that name, would wield it like a whip.

But there it read, plain, as part of an invitation. Someone wanted em — a wholler em — to attend a party. It'll be lit, it said, and the Youma General concurred with certainty in light of eir physical state. And once ey accepted that invitation, ey found emself before the splendorous, ageless place in an instant.

Eir mask, gilded, was more a cage barring view of eir features. Ey felt sequestered, contained, banned from knowing and meeting others for how the bars protruded over eir mouth and nose. The upper portion a mess of flower and filigree, defined by a central lick of blazing orange, ey was both put upon and prettied up for the occasion. Gone was eir uniform the way ey understood it, now replaced with the same patterning and asymmetrical cuts in dramatic drapes of fabric. A double-breasted waistcoat, fasteners, a cape, fitted pants, leather boots emblazoned with delicate filigree and freed of all their prior metalwork now repackaged em. But, as ever, eir fire blazed with no clothing to cover it, and eir cage was quaintly reformed to mimic a corset's boning.

The Red Prince entered, slowly at first, wary, with gaze turned toward the skyline to follow the milk glass to the balcony and beyond. Cloudy, ethereal, fantastical — this was a wonder. Aptly named, like the marvels defining human culture and ingenuity. Somewhere, elsewhere, there was one beholden to eir other name. Perhaps one like this — glittering and desperate and decadent.

Finally eir gaze fell to the occupants, the guests, and found none of any familiarity. Ey would wait, then, and listen, for none of the conversations sounded quite engrossing yet.

The Dark Fox

He glanced down, eyes narrowing slightly to see, of course, a child.
'Order' shenanigans, was his immediate thought. If anything happened like the surrounding, where they'd turned so many civilians into... a space wall.

It didn't bear thinking about.
"Mmm, Hello." He said carefully instead. Tipping his head to one side and taking in her clothing. No aura... just a child. Could be a 'Chibi' could be a civilian. How irritating.

"How may I help you?"

Windy Thing (Andronicus

She turned to face the man who spoke to her, eyebrow raising behind her mask. The Windy Thing narrowed her eyes a little, mind trying to determine just where she recognized this one from. She pursed her lips, though he could not see it and shrugged a shoulder.

"Oh? And what would you suggest for a good time, hrm?" she purred, not that she'd take him up on it. The Windy Thing was still very much spoken for outside the mask, even if he wasn't here. But she could play along. She leaned towards A Good Time and winked, fingers coming up to rest against her mask.

"Call me... A Windy Thing," she said coyly, eyes bright with amusement.

Sunshine Ranch

"I don't know about that...history can be important."

"So we don't repeat it." Blackbird. Not a name, not a misspoken phrase either - she chose that to give to me, just like I chose Sunshine. Hmm. More and more people were appearing for Katie's debut, but Aegir was quite happy to keep eyes on Blackbird for the moment.

She might want a friend, after all. "Delightful to meet you, Blackbird." Eyes as green as the earth went jellybean shaped as he smiled at her from under his mask, "Do you know the Lady Chauvet personally, or are you one of her more...exotic guests?"

He was trying to be politik, calling the randos 'exotics'. It sounded nicer than 'people you just ******** cold-called for your party - honestly Katie that's amazing but holy s**t.' did, to be sure. Which was what he'd said at first. As Aegir shifted, his cream coloured cape moved so that he caught it with one hand, lifting and draping it over one arm for effect - and also so that the growing throng did not step on it while he was at rest.

Splendor

Versailles was still trying to decipher which of the pizzas was most likely to have the least grease, when he heard someone speaking next to him. He turned to her, only to hear her ask her question and shook his head. "No I'm... Splendor. At least tonight. I'm not sure who this Chauvet person is, but it is rather jarring to have such a magnificent place and in it the food is... pizza." He replied, grinning, though she would be unable to see it underneath his mask. He couldn't tell if the mask covering his lips was a good thing or not yet.

He quirked an eyebrow, once again unseen, at the girl, and realizing that she had just introduced herself also. "Ah... Cabbage... then." He was a bit confused on why someone would want to be named after a vegetable, but he wasn't hear to question names. "It's nice to meet you." He said, holding his hand out for a shake.

He looked at himself and then back at her. "Well, I didn't exactly choose my clothing, but I believe it suits me quite well. Thank you for the compliment. You look quite exquisite yourself." Though he did wonder if any of these clothes were original. He felt as though he was wearing a bit of a costume with his outfit. Did people actually wear these back then to be fancy?

Zen

"Stranger, really?" He wondered if the other was talking about Wonders or other things... dealing with magic and chaos and whatnot, there were bound to be strange things all around. Kami had yet to run into any however. Sure, he had done a few events, but those were all done by various Negaverse Agents, and at this point, those seemed normal. At least to someone who knew what was going on.

Kami raised an eyebrow at the other's question. Weren't there invitations? Of course he planned to come here tonight. It had been right there on the invite!

"I did plan to come, the invitation told me when it was happening so I cleared my schedule. And well, it's magic. It explains just about every weird thing going on, right?" It was about the only explanation. After all, how else would the Squire have gotten so many people here? "But I do think it would be good to explore to night if we aren't closed off from seeing other places besides here and upstairs." He said, looking up and seeing some others above them, though he didn't recognize any of them. "And there's food. I think it would be good to come here if only for that." Even if it was food he usually didn't want to eat.

Cabbages

"Maybe they ran out of budget when they booked the venue," Cabbage Girl said blithely, taking another look around. "Or when they got all the costumes. Whatever their budget was, they stopped juuuuuust short of food." She didn't grab a plate, as she wasn't terribly hungry, but when he offered his hand she couldn't help but stare blankly at it. Did he think she was just some...casual girl that touched stranger's hands? What if he had stranger germs? Space germs?

Still, she considered it for a moment, then looked at her own gloves. There was a degree of separation between them, and Cabbage Girl was scared of No Things, certainly not fancy boys. Before she could lose her nerve, she reached out tentatively, giving the softest of hand shakes before she pulled away.

It was safe, it was fine, she wasn't going to get sick. She wasn't Ella Barnett the average shut in gamer nerd--she was some elegant ball mistress named Cabbage Girl, and someone just called her exquisite. Her lips quirked in a half-hearted smile, trying to find the punchline, but when everything was already so absurd it was hard to just pick out one thing.

"It's nice to meet you too," she replied, tilting her head. "You really make it work. Do you come to these often?" Internally, she was smashing her face into her hands, but on the outside she just smiled politely. What, shaking hands and now pickup lines? How fast and loose did she plan on being?

Blackbird

The Blackbird did not deign to respond to his smiling eyes with a fond gaze of her own--she looked up at him from under the veil with a mix of curiosity and derision. "We'll have to agree to disagree," she said of history, her nose wrinkling under the veil.

"I don't know her, no," she answered truthfully, looking out over the assembled gaggle of attendants, each one covered in more frills than the last. Were they all strangers, then, dressed up in finery and asked to puppet around each other, posturing for attention and limelight? Was this how the White Moon controlled their soldiers, sating them on food and bidding them to dance for each other's entertainment? Blackbird didn't understand, nor could she read any of her fellows in the room. Though she felt her connection to chaos, strong and gnawing as ever, the rest of the room felt like a haze, a blankness that couldn't be right. How could she be the only powered person here?

Dampening. Blackbird's eyes flickered wide for just a moment, and she clenched her jaw. This could be a trap--she needed to leave. Now. There was a door, opposite the stairs, and with her strength it would be easy enough to kick down-- "Well--enjoy your evening," she said by means of exiting the conversation, turning her shoulders away, but before she had the chance to jog for the door she saw the back of a familiar blue head, and moved towards that instead. Zinkenite--she hoped it was Zinkenite--appeared to be chatting with some child, and though she could feel her wrist phantom burning under her sleeves she stepped just behind his good eye, tapping one shoulder.

"Sir," she breathed, a little more ragged than intended while she tried to get her runaway heartbeat under control. Hopefully the sound of her voice would be enough to jog his memory, if the leg wasn't a giveaway. He's a General-King. No one can harm me while I'm with a General-King. It's fine. It's fine. If this is a trap, then--we'll kill them all. Simple. Easy.

"I wasn't expecting to see you here," she offered, glancing between him and the child. Inhale, exhale, a little easier now. "...You look nice."

Bright Girl (Ara)

"You look famaliar have we meet before." She asked bluntly, in a way that only children are. She wanted to know who he was, why she couldn't put a name to the masked man despite feeling like she had seen him before.

She noticed a woman approach them. She was wearing some black overcoat and a fox mask. Much like the man's, Ara wondered if they were friends. What she said both confirmed Ara's theory and confused her. 'Sir' that was something you said to an important person not friend, was he her boss? Boss of what? Or maybe it was 'Sir' like the knight 'Sir' this was a page's party after all it would make sense that knights would be here, but did they use 'Sir'?

"Hi miss." She said to the new comer. "Are you guys friends?" She asked "I like your coat."

Ivy

"Indeed. As you said - magic. It can lead to many a strange thing. I'm sure you'll be able to say the same thing given enough time." Which it seemed the other lacked, at least as far as he figured. It hadn't taken him long to get involved in some rather strange things.

"Mmm...indeed - they did. But they were left about the city and not addressed to anyone. So it wasn't as though the invitation was to you personally...just whoever found it...or maybe no one. What if they wound up in the wrong hands?" Such as his own hands, not that he said that. "We can't sense a thing - we're blind in a sense. I know I kept the invitation but didn't think it serious...though it was interesting." He hadn't thought it would work for him, why would it? He wasn't exactly some knight or senshi - thankfully.

The Dark Fox - Cypher

He turned to the touch on his arm, and something in his shoulders gave way to a little more ease, she seemed, familiar enough, closer now it was more surely her, the way she held herself especially, the way she addressed him.

“Ah, Nor I you, you look, resplendent.” He gave her a fraction of a bow, meeting her eyes long enough to let her catch the light shrug of his shoulders. Whatever was going on, he didn’t know either.

“The feathers of your mask, they suit you somehow.” He inclined his head to show he meant it, despite the fact he was making small talk and glanced back to the very young woman whom had approached him first.

“I wouldn’t know, that’s the point of a masquerade, don’t you think? Perhaps I am, just for now a …”
He reached up and touched his mask, but while he could tell it was animal he wasn’t sure what it was, so he tapped it like he was thinking.

“Call me Cypher, in the spirit of the Masque.”

Crystal
Crystal was - she wasn't particularly imaginative, and she wasn't particularly creative, and now that she was here she could think of a million better epithets - she could have gone with Edie. It would have been a joke about her old name, the one she didn't like to use unless she had to, but it would have been more imaginative than Crystal. All she had in defense of that was something about moodstones.

Not that anyone was actually impugning her reasoning, or that any of this was being aired outside of her head, but she had a tendency to catastrophize occasionally. All that to say something she wouldn't even say inside of her own head: she was a little scared, a little uncomfortable, because there were so many people she didn't know and she could feel the panic threatening. She'd never be rid of it.

That wasn't important. It didn't matter. She thought she might recognize the woman a bit away from her, talking to a man in a fox mask and a small girl in iridescent white, but it was too tentative a similarity to be certain, and if she was wrong she'd just make a fool of herself.

Uhntiss (Encke)

The letter Encke had received had delighted him, even if he didn't know who it was from. A celebration? A gala? In space?

Space.

Basiluzzo had also managed to receive one of the mysterious invitations, which came as a bit of an additional excitement--a party in space that they could go to together. A masquerade in space, apparently. He'd need to watch what he was wearing if it wasn't supposed to be obvious who he was. The whole glowing thing made him kinda ... obvious ...

Perhaps that was why he had such a sequined outfit on when he got teleported into space with Basiluzzo. It did a fairly decent job of obscuring what he was. (Hopefully.) But also, he just liked it.

His grin was from ear to ear.

"Ain't this fancy?" asked Encke, glancing to Basiluzzo, as he took in the room. Well, the decorations and the food weren't that fancy. Was that pizza?

... Wait, was that a Happy Pride banner?

Was this just all the queer senshi and knights?

"Dammit, if I had known this was a pride party, I would have brought my bi flag..."
