Time seemed to slow. The attacking beowolf's torso raised into the air as every fiber of every muscle was being redirected for this final blow. It's arm muscles rippled beneath its black flesh as it slashed downwards. It's aim was true, except its target wasn't there. The ground itself rumbled and cracked underneath its claws. Garret could feel them whistling by just centimeters away from his neck. One of the claws snapped off with the force causing the grimm to howl. The second beowolf wasn't prepared for their prey to escape so it sat there, taken by shock, giving Garret time to get his standing and make another move.

For a moment time had slowed down. He was mid roll, eyes facing the ground with the back of his neck facing the grimm. He could feel something whistle mere centimeters from his neck, could almost feel the cold claws of death reaching to capture his neck. He could almost see his life end in that moment. But fate, skill, or perhaps luck had something else in store. The cold claws of death had narrowly missed him as he felt the ground rumble and crack from a heavy impact. Then time sped up again and he had finished his roll. A quick glance to his side showed the grimm had landed right where he had been moments before, and its howl only confirmed that. However...it was not a howl of anger or disappointment but of...pain? Looking to see why, he would see a broken claw lying on the ground near him. 'That is the least of the pain you shall feel on this day.' Garret thought to himself before a thought crept into mind. One that he acted on with haste as his hand grabbed the claw.

Another glance had shown the other Grimm was stunned, apparently not expecting Garret to have rolled away. It had been too sure of its victory, and that mistake would cost the grimm dearly. 'Now to show you who the prey truly is.' He thought to himself as he quickly sprang to his feet, before turning on the Grimm that had been howling in pain. It had gone for a death blow on him, and Garret was going to respond in kind. While he had never been trained to use an improvised weapon, this claw was as sharp as a knife. And it wasn't rocket science to figure out how to stab with it. He sprang onto the Grimm's back, trying to hold on with one arm...as the hand with the sharp claw would begin to try and stab the thing in the head with its own claw. This was more barbaric than Garret was used to. There was an elegance to spear fighting. This was just brutal savagery. But if that was what it took to win in this instance, he would do it. Garret would try to stab it in the non-bony parts of its head, intent to plunge it deep enough (and repeatedly if he could) until the thing died from its own claw.

Garret would successfully mount the injured grimm. The other one was just getting into combat mode again by the time the claw was plunged into the neck of its packmate. Garret could hear a long and lonesome howl before the creature below him begun to crumble into black dust. Dropping him to the ground. The other beowolf pounced on Garret, and due to the lack of good footing landed right on top of garret. Its mouth would bite Garret's chest, mostly grabbing his clothes but three teeth digging deeper into the skin. The creature would rush forwards, dragging Garret on the ground and shredding the shirt and some skin off his back. They moved quite a distance and the claw was no nowhere to be seen. Garret could feel his right shoulder hit something hard. Something metallic. His spear. The grimm had dragged him all the way too it. The creature growled and listed its left paw. ready to slash down and finish the job. Its eyes were like a roaring fire of death. Locked onto its prey as time seemed to slow once again due to the adrenaline.

As Garret mounted the grimm he did not hesitate or waver. A powerful stab to the neck was his first target. He knew not if it would die in one blow, so he was preparing to deliver as many as he could. He heard the creature give a long howl as he twisted the claw and would try to pull it out...but was having difficulty. Claws weren’t made for clean cuts or stabs. However, much to his surprise, it didn’t seem any more blows were necessary. His frown of concentration and desperation turned to shock as it turned to dust beneath him. Caught by surprise, he couldn’t react sufficiently as he fell to the ground chest first as he let out a grunt on impact. It was not a long fall, but the weightlessness combines with sudden feeling of hitting the ground was a little jarring. But he had no time to focus on that. He had not forgotten about the other one. He rolled onto his back with the intention of getting up as his mind was already getting ready to think of ways to outsmart the last grimm. Unfortunately, the grimm has been more than ready for him. Not even time for conscious or deep thought had been given to him as the grimm was already on him. He felt a pressure and burning pain in his chest as he teeth dig into his shirt...and a few more into his skin. Garret let out a gasp from the pain, though he gritted his teeth to prevent more of a sound.

Before he could try to push it off it began to rush forward, still holding onto him with it’s jaws. He could feel his shirt tear and shred, the burning of his skin being dragged against the ground. No clear thought could enter his mind as his hands pushed at the beast to no avail. His back was almost numb from the constant pain, not knowing when it would end or how to even stop it. If he had much air in his lungs he may have been groaning from the constant abuse as the pain made it hard to focus. That is until his right shoulder impacted something hard as he winced and let out a small “Ack...” from it. His first thought, now that he had a moment of strange calm, was that it was a tree...but as his mind processes the hit and his head turned slightly to look he was met with a surprise. “Heir,” he whispered with surprise. He was in an awkward position though given his right shoulder was against it and the grimm still had it’s teeth latched on. He would have to use his left hand...though it seemed he was not the only one preparing to act. He saw the grimm raise its left paw as well as the murderous fire in it’s eyes. Garret locked eyes with it, his own was determined and fierce. ‘You will die like the beast you are.’ he thought to himself as his left hand would quickly go to grab the haft off his spear. He didn’t have time to position it so the spear head would face the grimm before the attack coming to him would hit, so he was forced to act more defensively there. But, the feeling of the spear so near...he was in his element again. He would try to pull his spear down towards him, to be between him and the incoming attack. At the same time his right hand would try to nail the grimm in the side of the head with a blow, maybe an eye if he was lucky. It was again something he was not accustomed to or practiced...but it was all he could do. His main priority was to try and use the length of the spear to block the attack, but if he could distract it with his punch it may give him an edge as well.

The creature was fortunately too stupid to realize Garret had possession of his spear. It swung its paw down with great force only to slam into the metal shaft. The awkward angle caused the spear to smack into Garret's body with some force, but it successfully blocked what otherwise would have been a lethal blow to the head. The creature's eyes grew wide with confusion just in time for Garret to successfully land a punch right in the eye. The beowolf gave a shrill yelp as it hopped off of him and backed up a few feet. Now, not so sure about its next move. It looked to the left, and then to the right. None of its friends were left. It started to turn to run. It had lost its chance to finish its prey, and in return, had lost all hope. It would aim towards the forest it came, past Garret's other spear, but would only be about 15 feet away by the time Garret could stand.

Garret mentally braced as he saw the paw still swiping down, feeling as it first impacted with the length of his spear before that was pushed against him none to gently. He let out a grunt from the impact, his aura sparking since he had taken a fair beating in this battle. It still held for now though, thankfully. And his quick thinking had worked. His spear took the brunt of the hit and prevented the Grimm from finishing him off. Not that he had time to celebrate it at this moment, save a slight relief he would breathe a few seconds longer. Feeling his fist connect with it's eye, despite the pain from such a hit on his own part, made him feel satisfaction. 'May not have been a method I prefer using...but surprisingly effective.' He thought to himself as it gave a shrill yelp and hopped off him and backed up. He smiled, the first smile in a bit since being under constant pressure from the three beowolves. Things had been, and may still be, very close. As Garret began to recover a bit himself, eyes locked on the beast as he reoriented his spear, he did not rise quite yet. He needed to be ready in case it tried attacking him again, even if he had to do so before standing. The spear would move swiftly, almost comfortably, into an appropriate grip for him while prone. It was at this point that it began to look left and right, now realizing the situation that it was in. His smile only grew.

Then it would turn and run. 'Coward!' He thought angrily in his mind. He had been committed to fighting to his death, yet the beast turned tail and ran at the first sign that the odds may not be in its favor. It had no honor, no hope, and soon no life. As it was turning and running, Garret would begin to rise from prone to a standing position. His arrogant smile faded for a more severe and serious look. The beast, in his mind, had to be eradicated. Not just because it was a creature of grimm, but because it was a coward. A part, deep down in him, felt like the grimm was his past self. The fearful, weak, unresolved youth that had so many die for him. But this Grimm was getting no redemption. Only a swift grave. By the time Garret was fully stood and ready, the grimm was about fifteen feet away from him. Garret would prepare his spear, stance changing in one prepared to throw it again. 'Too much of a head start to reach.' He thought to himself as he moved his arm back and aimed. "There is no escape from your fate. I warned you already; this only ends in death." He would say quietly, mostly to himself. He would take a breath...and throw his spear directly towards the grimm with as much force as he could muster. He had watched it as it ran, tried to pick up the pattern and direction, and hoped he calculated right to impale it with the spear. Regardless, if he had missed he would soon chase after it. He was not letting the Grimm get away.

The beowolf was picking up speed and now sprinting as fast as it could. It had a very slight angle towards the forest, but otherwise it was on a narrow path which made it fairly easy for Garret to calculate its path. The spear whizzed through the air with tremendous force. The grimm looked to the side with panic a moment before Garret could hear the slushy thud pierce his target's side. The creature was sent into a sideways roll over its left shoulder before it imploded in a trail of dust in the same direction. Finally, all of the creatures were defeated, and peace was restored. The pleasant sound of chirping birds and the wind in the grass of the meadow returned.

[Kill the rest of the pack to win! 3/3 -- Complete!]

Something shiny caught Garret's eye though, in the dust of the final grimm was a metallic object of sorts. It was in a canister of sorts. Cylindrical and about one foot in widths with sharp edges. It must have been implanted in the grimm somehow. The canister had a hand print in the middle of it that wrapped around it with a single sharp needle where the palm would be. Other then that the surface was polished and bare. It didn't seem to have any obvious way of opening.

Garret watched as a streak of crimson soared through the air...and hit true to its target. He smiled in satisfaction as it sent the Grimm into a sideways roll, the sound of impact like music to his ears. After all the pain they caused him, it felt good for them to feel his vengeance. It would roll for a few more seconds before exploding into a cloud of black dust. "A fitting end to a coward." He would say quietly, no one being around to hear him. He would begin to walk towards where it died at a calm walk now that things seemed to have calmed, though he did keep alert. He was in no shape to survive another attack, not for the moment at least. His wounds were also catching up to him. His back burned from being slid and skin tearing, his chest bled lightly into his attire....His body felt sore from the constant attacks. It would take time for his aura to fully heal him, and a trip to the apothecary seemed necessary at this point. His mission seemed like it may not be complete at this rate, having not even penetrated into the forest yet. 'I was too careless.' He thought to himself as he would near his spear, having been taken by surprise too often. He was used to combating Grimm, but these had seemed a bit more coordinated and smart if the first one truly was the pack leader. He wondered how many other victims they may have claimed, as the latter three were far less cunning and relied on numbers. He was broken from his thoughts though by the sight of something shiny in the dusty remains.

'What's this?' He pondered as he knelt down besides the object. Amidst the peaceful sounds of birds chirping and a cool wind bringing some relief to Garret, this object stood in stark contrast to the nature all around. It seemed some sort of canister. 'You were not here before...Nor did I see you on the Grimm...Disturbing.' He thought to himself as he would look to try to inspect the object in further detail. It was a foot in width, with sharp edges, and seemed to have hand print with a needle where the palm would be to hold it that way. Garret was unsure what to make of the object. Theories of how it could be here circulated through his mind, but it all boiled down to two things; it was somehow implanted into the Grimm, or the Grimm had eaten somebody carrying this object. Being alone, as far as he knew, he was not going to risk gripping the object as it seemed to be meant to. He had little clue of the purpose or function of it, and he doubted he could figure it out on his own. 'I should bring this with me when I report back.' He thought to himself. Vickers would be someone who may be able to figure out it's purpose, and if it was inside the Grimm Autrox would want to know. It was part of Garret's job to report strange occurrences of Grimm after all. Instinctively, he would reach to where his satchel would be...before releasing an annoyed sigh as he looked back to its remains. "Vile creatures." He would say softly. It would have been ideal to have in there, but the beowolves had destroyed it. Which reminded him that he would need to get a new one. 'At least it saved my life.' He thought to himself, the satchel having been through a lot with him.

Garret would carefully attach the object to his side with a make-shift strap of a bendable plant stem(needle point facing away from him), before collecting his spears along with some roses. Carefully keeping the white one as well. It would't do, even with this setback, to not keep to his tradition. Three red roses were laid out for the vanished Grimm, and one wounded hunter would press forward into the woods. While he had the chance to cut his losses and leave, he was not that type of person. He took the mission with the intent to complete it. The only way he would allow himself to fail would be with his own death. Further, he had the other objective of finding that place from his dreams. He desired answers, and he would get them. 'Nothing remains simple.' He thought with a chuckle, despite the seriousness of the situation. He knew his limits, to a degree. And he knew he could last a bit longer. By seeking out the enemy, he would hopefully make it safer for others. It is all too easy to see how the ones he fought so far could claim the lives of others had they lived. And he was not one to let such a threat go unchecked. Garret would walk slowly yet deeper into the forest, senses alert for any sign of another presence. He had been ambushed too often, and was now very cautious.

❝Be Prepared, or expect Death's hand to grab you ❞

Ambushed too often? That, had to suck for the poor huntsmen. Unfortunately, he was about to be ambushed again. At least, softly. A kunai would would be launched towards Garret aiming right between his eyes. Of course, there was more than enough time for Garret to be able to react to in it. In fact, it be probably surprising if Garret actually was hit by the kunai. Either way, it didn't matter whether it hit or not as Kai would soon reveal himself to be the source of the attack. Around 15 feet in the air, he would whistle and look at Garret. "Who are you? Normally only shady characters roam the lands of the outskirts. Fact or Opinion?" Kai questions not with a neutral tone. He was wearing his regular outfit and not his hakumen suit. Descending down from the tree, he would soon land, causing a slight bit of dust and dirt to rise up in cloud like form. His emerald eyes would not let Garret out of his sight. His hand would soon wield a shuriken, ready to throw it if need be as he waited for an answer. He never seen Garret before, but the same could probably be said for Kai. Hopefully, it could be resolved in a peaceful manner. Though, if Kai was informed about Garret's purpose and mission, he may be inclined to want to tag along just to make sure the job is done adequately. Ironically enough, he wasn't as strong as Garret. Lv. Wise.

I could of sworn I thought grim were nearby in this area. While random attacks do occur in the outskirts, I thought I heard growls and shrieks nearby. Could I been mistaken? Highly illogical. I don't make such mistakes. Even if I imagined the sound of the grim, the impact of a weapon was definitely nearby. So if no grim, then this person was training. His internal analysis continued until something caught his eye. Paying more attention to the male in front of him, he seemed hurt. Blood was staining into his clothing. Maybe, he was wrong in this situation? Kai would wait for the appropriate answer. Depending how things go, he may actually think about healing him. However, he didn't want to heal someone who was more evil than good. He didn't want to aid someone who was trying to uproot and defy the governing laws of vale.

Some may be curious of why Kai was in the area? He didn't find many places of solitude in Vale to read. Of course there was the library he could go to but that still would have people around. Plus, what if he wanted to do some training? He found himself near the outskirts a lot more than one would think was normal for a loner. It was actually in mid-sentence that he started hearing some commotion. The commotion ended up leading him into Garret and fortunately no grim. What will come of this meeting?

Garret had been traversing the strangely peaceful outskirts for a little bit now. Past the grimm he had fought earlier, no others seemed to be in the immediate vicinity or near enough to have noticed. At least that was what Garret believed for the moment. He had virtue on his back in its usual spot, only needing Heir out for defense for now. Forests could make his style of fighting cumbersome when using both, depending on the closeness of the vegetation. His mind though was focused on his surroundings, and objective. This was no leisurely stroll through the forest, even if it almost felt as such for the moment. While some of the pain and wounds had healed a little, enough to stop bleeding, Garret was still clearly wounded. His aura had taken a bit of a beating earlier as well, even if he was on the mend. Logically, he probably should have quit while he was ahead. He had done his part to kill some grimm that could easily have claimed more lives. But he was never the type to settle while he could still do something. He was more the type to push himself to the point he couldn't go anymore...or at least to where he could barely move. Which led to his current continuation into the outskirts, driven by his eternal quest to slay grimm as well as to find the location he dreamed of. He felt he was steadily getting closer, but he couldn't be sure.

It was, when he thought he may have picked the trail of something, that he noticed something coming straight for him almost out of nowhere. He caught it very early, enough that he was able to twist Heir in front of him to block it from its true target. The kunai would impact with a metallic clash against his spear before bouncing off and to the ground. Already, Garret's spear was twisting to point towards the direction it had come from as his eyes began to scan around. 'A weapon. It seems I am not the only one out here.' He thought to himself as he would hear a whistle and see a man fifteen feet in the air. His eyes would register a blond male, height unknown at his angle, who seemed to have a slender build. The man wasted no time in speaking, asking who he was and asking if only shady character roamed the outskirts. Garret would give him a neutral look in turn as he thought of how to address this person. While Garret pondered, eyes intently on the person, he would see him descend from the tree and land to the ground with a small cloud of dirt and dust rising up from it. The man had his eyes locked on Garret as well. 'A strange person, to attack and then move to conversation.' He thought to himself. Garret noted as his hand would reach for a weapon, his own grip on Heir tightening slightly. If it came to combat, Garret was more than ready even in this state. "My name is none of your concern, but you may refer to me as Lancer. In regards to your question, that is an opinion, unless you consider yourself to be shady. May I know the name of my assailant in return, and what your purpose is here?" Garret would respond, tone still neutral but there being a challenge in his eyes now. He knew if the man wanted to do him actual harm, he would not have attacked from right in front of him at such a distance when he was unnoticed. Which led Garret to believe the man had another reason or purpose here. 'What could have brought him here?' He wondered, thinking if it may be for similar reasons as himself or something else entirely. Still, despite the relative peace of this conversation Garret remained in combat stance. He was not a trusting person, for good reason. It seemed that, despite whatever wounds he had suffered, he was still able to hold his own. Pondering for a moment, Garret would briefly add something. "Answer my question, and I shall give an answer in return." Almost subconsciously, Garret took note of his height. He seemed to just barely be taller than Garret, if not roughly the same.

❝Be Prepared, or expect Death's hand to grab you ❞

The baritone voice reaching his ear caught Kai by surprise. He couldn't help but become more curious. A new goal was shifting into his head. It was irrelevant that he sent an attack earlier. What caught him by surprise most was a hint that came from his accent. He couldn't put his finger on it. It wasn't like he knew Garret but he felt strangely at home around him. The line about being shady was thrown back at him. His demeanor hardened, he would never.Though, he rather play into it a little. If this man was someone who was more of a villain, then why not play into the cards dealt? "Hmph. A shady person? Considering my Vacuo roots.....that wouldn't be a bad assumption." he responds before putting the shuriken away. He didn't trust Garret but he knew a shuriken of nothing against the weapon he was wielding. Still, something was bothering him. It was a mystery he couldn't get. This accent was weighing heavily on him. Emerald eyes still having Garret in their sight. I probably should try de-escalate this situation. However, he already injured. I obviously can take him out. That's not an issue. Though, why would he call himself Lancer? Such unnecessary trouble

There were many tings Kai dislike. ell, he didn't have that many likes at all. This secrecy was annoying. Why not just say his name? Kai was going to give his because he didn't care. He would take out anyone that comes after him and he had full faith he could take out the man in front of him. "Kai...Kantero.. . I am simply here to see what the commotion was that disturbed my peace and quiet. However, I don't see any grim. Guess you took the out" He started before a smirk played on his lips. "Of course. It also looks like you took a beating. Sure you want to continue combat? Because if you face me, then may just end up with your life being taken" He adds. Insult to injury? No. He found it pathetic. If he was truly fighting grim, unless it was something highly strong and powerful he saw no reason to have such injuries. Especially if you pride yourself a true huntsmen. Then again. Kai always talked s**t, but he made sure to have plans just in case he needed to back it up.

In response to having the shady comment thrown back at him, Garret would notice the man's expression harden. 'It would seem he does not enjoy such a label.' Garret would think to himself silently, expression betraying nothing as to his internal thoughts for now. The man should've expected such a question in return if he were bold enough to ask, at least that is how Garret viewed each question he asked to be reciprocated. However, his following answer did not sit well with Garret. Here the man was admitting that he had some trouble with Vacuo law in the past, in front of a member of the Revelay family. Multiple thoughts had surfaced in his mind as his neutral expression would shift to a more...conflicted one? Thoughts of him being another survivor of Vacuo came to mind, perhaps a sense of camaraderie for their fallen homeland. But then the shady business he may have committed in their homeland also came to mind. Villains or not he could care less of most of the time, depending on what made them a villain. Very rarely were things black and white. But if he was a citizen of his old homeland and Garret one of the few possible nobles that may have survived from there...he knew not if he was supposed to exercise judgement on the man. Before Garret could come to a decision, he noted that the man had put his shuriken away. It would rest on his answer in regards to his purpose here on how Garret would treat the man. While the man moved his weapon away, Garret kept his at the ready with a wary gaze trained on him. Trust was to be earned, and thus far the man had earned little. The Vacuo roots may have held sympathy if not for his implication.

The man, at least, would answer his question. Kai Kantero was his name, claiming to be searching for the source that broke his peace before inferring it was Grimm. That was something Garret could relate to, as he hated the stifling walls of the city and much preferred the outdoors. The outskirts were a place he frequented, usually alone, and usually to hunt Grimm. It was regrettable that this circumstance had been worse than usual when encountering this man, as he not yet knew whether this would end in a fight. At his mention of Garret taking the Grimm out he would merely nod for now, but an arrogant smile would play his lips at the guys challenge. Garret may not be in his best physical shape at the moment, but a wounded fighter was more deadly than a healthy one. Life on the line could encourage the greatest out of a fighter...or just lead to their demise. The smirk on his lips only made Garret want to challenge him all the more, despite his disadvantage. Garret would begin to speak, providing an answer to the man he may not have expected. "You have answered my questions, so you shall receive some in return. My purpose here is to search for the area that I have been challenged, and to slay any Grimm that crosses my path for Beacon. My name, since you gave me yours, is Garret Reveley of Vacuo." Garret would answer, as he has promised to answer him in return. It may make the alias he gave him mute, but Garret was a man of his word. He was also curious of how the man would react after admitting his shady behavior if he was from Vacuo as he claimed. His expression would harden, though the arrogant smirk would remain on his lips. "You claim to have been in peace here, so I see no quarrel with you at this moment. I cannot pass judgement on you for your past, only for your current actions. Make no mistake though that I will defend myself if necessary, and the warning extends to you as well. Fighting me may result in your demise as I intend to fight till my final breath if necessary." Garret would finish, standing firm in front of him. Depending on his answer depending if this would result in a duel to the death, if the two may part in peace, or whether their interaction may continue. "So what say you, friend or foe?" Garret would simply ask after a moment. He was a man of honor, and would not strike his opponent unless he agreed they would be enemies.

❝Be Prepared, or expect Death's hand to grab you ❞

There it is!! It all was making sense now. The pieces were coming together. He was intrigued by this slaying of grim goal that Garret had but the more important thing that came from the conversation was that there was that he was from Vacuo. WAIT A survivor?! He...how old was he? When did he? Many things were going through Kai's head. "Wait? You from Vacuo?...So are you older than me? Or were you a kid to" he questioned thinking about it all. The memory played into his head on repeat. "Ehhh... I couldn't save them..That poor girl...those red eyes...and blue hair.." He almost looked as if he seen a ghost. However, what did he mean? In retrospect, the person he talking about didn't die. He knew for a fact he saved her. So was he talking about her family? Why was that weighing on his conscious? Like he could of done more? He was just a kid doing way more than what was asked of him. Getting it together, he was confused by the man's words. Did he think? What did he think? "Only mistake I ever made in my past was not being strong enough to save everyone when I was around 5 or 6...I was too weak.We all were too weak. Though, I doubt you can understand. Nor do I care for you to" He quickly was regaining his composure. That quick slip. He was so caught off guard seeing someone else from his home that he let his guard down. Not no more though. That would have to stay in check.

Hardening up more, he would deny such trivial ownership of the words he offered. Friend? Foe? Things can change in matter of seconds. "Neither. I am nothing more than a person you have met. I consider no one a friend and if you killing grim I can't consider you a foe. For now, you nothing more to me than some Vacuo survivor." Kind of harsh but that how Kai was. He wouldn't draw his weapon but he did give Garret a cold stare again with his emerald eyes. The fact he was standing tall, standing un-phased in front of him and showing no fear. He hated it. Did he think he was as strong as him? Better than him? That s**t eating arrogance struck a nerve in Kai but he oddly liked it. "I not going to fight you, but I will tag along on your journey just to show you what a true huntsmen can do and show you who the best product of Vacuo is." he informs before giving him another scan over, sizing him up again. He may be from my home and I somewhat fortunate to see other survivors doing well, I will not be outdone by him. He on a mission to slay grim. Fine. Not only will I accompany him, but I will show how I am stronger and a better huntsmen than him. I will even destroy more grim as well! This isn't some rivalry. This is simply going to be me showing how, if he dared, he would meet his own demise fighting me. 2 birds one stone. Killing Grim and asserting dominance. "Don't you think we wasting time just standing here?" He questioned.

It seems Garret triggered something in the man before him, as there was a total shift in him from what he could tell. He immediately began to question Garret if he was being truthful. before asking how old he was and such presumably when it fell. Going so far as to say, perhaps accidentally, that he was a kid when it fell. 'That would mean we were both young when it fell.' He thought to himself, though they could still be many years apart by that line of thinking. He would go on to say he couldn't save them, presumably describing a girl who died in the evacuation of Vacuo. Garret felt a familiar pain return to him as he remembered the night of his own flight. His family dead, the Grimm everywhere, the fires...It was a memory that could never be forgotten for him, nor what it did to his life from that night forward. But Garret was still in control of that, having had a long time to think over what had happened and internalize it. So he did not quite have a moment where it all spilled forth like the man before him, only giving him a nod for the moment as he thought of his own response. The man, in regards to the girl, almost seemed like he had seen a ghost. 'The past is best left where it is, but never forgotten.' Garret thought to himself. He would seem to start getting things together a bit more to answer his next question of what he did, with the man saying his only fault was that he was too weak to save everyone. Something else Garret could keenly understand from his own weakness, a weakness that took far too long to overcome in Garret's own mind. He also gave an age for when it all occurred. 'So we are similar in age after all.' He silently noted to himself. "I was young when it fell as well, so I do understand it whether you care or not. As you say, we were all too weak." Garret would simply respond to him, not offering the man pity or anything like that, but there was a hint of sorrow in his own voice. He had been too weak then as well, and needed no pity for his own failings.Though unlike Kai, he saw no need to explain or even hint at what had happened in his own. His past was his own affair, and speaking of the loss would only attract more grimm to them.

Then the man seemed to revert back to how he was when asked of friend or foe. Garret began to wonder if he was similar to himself in regards to pushing others away, but had no way to know for sure. It could be this was just one moment of weakness and the man truly was as abrasive as he seemed. He said he was neither friend nor foe, and that Garret himself was nothing more than a Vacuo survivor to him. 'A fair answer to the question, one that was expected.' Garret thought to himself, as while he did not voice it as an option he knew it to be an implied one. The man would give him a cold stare with his emerald eyes, but Garret would arrogantly meet his gaze with the same arrogant smile on his lips. He was never one to back down from challenges and instead chose to embrace them. It was the only way for him to grow stronger, strong enough to regain their homeland. He would then go to say how he wouldn't fight Garret, only tag along to prove he was the better huntsman and product of Vacuo. 'A hunting competition then.' Garret thought in his own mind as his smile grew. As the man scanned over Garret again, he would take the chance to speak. "You may try to best me, as I welcome the chance to defeat you." Garret responded, voice clearly showing that he was eager to see the man try to. Whoever won would simply be decided in the field, as Garret thought of it, though he would not let himself be outdone easily. He was not going to count his prior kills for this, so the next grimm to perish would be imperative. It was always best to start off strong. The survivor would then question why they were still standing there as Garret merely smiled. Part of him was tempted to make him wait longer, but he was too eager to try and best the man in this hunt. Especially if the man was from his homeland and didn't recognize his family name. 'The Reveleys shall be remembered.' He vowed to himself, before looking back at him again.

"Far be it from me to hinder your eagerness for battle, even if it may not go as favorably as you intend. This is the path we shall take." Garret would say, wondering if his words would have an effect on the man as he began to walk ahead at a normal pace. Part of him was tempted to activate his semblance and have the man struggling to catch up, but he was not so irresponsible. It being back to full strength, and his aura as well as a result, had left him feeling a bit more revitalized than how he was feeling earlier. He was doing his best to shrug off and ignore his wounds as he traveled, but was also not going at a rate that threatened to damage him. He was not foolish enough to let pride like that hinder him before the competition truly began. He would keep alert as he progressed further, thoughts springing to mind of asking what Kai remembered of Vacuo but not voicing them. He wanted this competition of theirs settled with first, and his own mission. Pleasantries could wait till after. Eventually, Garret would come across what appeared to be scratch marks against some trees and beowolf paw prints in the mud. He would crouch down to try to analyze it, but also to try and figure out if it were a recent threat or no. 'If the beowolfs were too far to help their alpha, could these have perhaps been theirs?' He wondered to himself, though did not voice that thought. He would look up to Kai, still having not thought up a name for him yet. "It seems there may be yet some Grimm for out hunt, though I know not where these tracks lead to or how fresh they are. I cannot track them with full certainty, so if you know how be my guest. It may give you the advantage you need to defeat me." Garret would say seriously at first before his arrogance came to bear again. He was very eager to prove his own ability to this person, even with his wounds. He also mentioned it because he knew his own strengths, and while he was in competition with the man, it mattered little if they never found any of the beasts. So if Kai could trace tracks or provide insight, Garret was more than alright with allowing him to. Even if it may mean allowing him the first blow, as from his recent experience, these Grimm were not newborns in this part of the outskirts.

❝Be Prepared, or expect Death's hand to grab you ❞

“That’s none of your business or concern. I am stronger now. When time comes, Vacuo will be reclaimed. Nothing for me here.” He commented. Kai was a prodigy. Something like a weapon in a sense. A person of great skill and philosophy. To be the perfect huntsmen. So, he needed to get back to that state. He hated when he contradicted himself. It just made him seem more confused and agitated. Back to neutral ground, he was curious how he would take his answer. He took it well. The blonde male found the arrogance refreshing. A lot of people get pissed off by his words. He been called many things but an a*****e was the main tag line that was attached to the poor soul. They were right. Only because he saw things from a more logical and straight up approach and took things like feelings out of it in most cases. “Eager? I would hope you have a solid plan on how to go about this. At least a better one than what you been doing. Unlike you, I rather get through this without dirtying my clothes with such unnecessary filth.” He retorts to the fellow Vacuo native. That is a curious question. Why didn’t Kai recognize Garret’s last name? He wasn’t taught much on the history of Vacuo. He was more of the rural type of kid growing up. Less about the history of Vacuo and more about tactics, fighting, and how to defend one’s self. Or wouldn’t that be more urban? The huntsmen a head start over most others, but there always probably someone who had a earlier start. He doubted it but he knew possibility was there. Finally on the move, that was more he liked it. Side chatter was nonsensical. Even though he was feeding into it.

Following behind Garret, Kai would end up putting more speed into his step. While not knowing where exactly they should be going, he gave a general direction and was moving too slow for Kai’s taste. Getting a good few feet ahead of Garret, Kai was focused on finding the grim. His weakness coming into play. With his hyper-focus on trying to find the grim, he ended up looking past clues tha would actually help achieve this goal. When Garret stopped, Kai took a few more steps ahead before he noticed the distance between him and his new….person. Looking back, Kai grew annoyed and would turn around. What could he possibly be looking at that caused him to stop? Closing the distance to the man of secretive renown, he would appear just in time for a question to be asked to him. Kai was good at solving mysterious and such but tracking wasn’t really a part of that? He could make an inference, but the chances of it being correct probably wasn’t that great. Of course, he wasn’t going to admit that and act like he had the ability. “Fool. It’s obvious. “ Kai started before looking at the slashes and the mud tracks. The mud tracks was a big clue. “Has to be fresh,” Kai started before unsheathing his weapon an having it ready. It was no spear, but if he wanted to he could have a d**k measuring contest between the two weapons if they wanted. But that was for another time. His focus was on the goal and that was the grim. The hyper focus made him forget one major thing. He could heal Garret and make the job a whole lot easier. Plus there would be no excuse Garret could use for when he loses. However, Kai at the moment couldn’t conjure up the thought to heal Garret. Seems he just was going to have to use his natural endurance for this.

“Far as where they headed. I don’t know. I do know we probably should keep our guard up. Be a waste if you died in such a fashion. Let’s keep going. We know important part is that they are recent. So, the rest doesn’t matter.” Kai informed before started to head back to his goal and taking steps to go deeper into the outskirts. If they didn’t find the grim, most likely the grim would find them. Please gods do not tell me that this man is nothing more than a muscle head. If so then that such a waste of potential. At least try prove me wrong and make this interesting: “Can you not go any faster?” Kai asked with a hint of annoyance. Too slow. Ironic, the question was but serious was Kai.
