Basic Solo #1: 547 words

“Jacques, could you come here for a moment?” Jacques heard the request just as he had set everything up to start on his latest painting again and sighed as he started to take everything off. Honestly, did his mother know exactly when he was trying to do something, only for her to interrupt or need something? He was pretty sure that she did, and often wondered if she had some sort of powers, like those beyond the ones he knew of from the “secret” magical war that he “fought” in.

He wandered down the spiral stairs, looking at his mother who had draped herself on one of the many couches and who looked extremely bored. He wanted to roll his eyes, but she somehow knew when he always did that too. It was extremely annoying. “Yes mother?” He asked, hoping that her request would be quick. He didn’t want to spend any more time away from his painting than he had to.

He wandered over to her side, standing, waiting for whatever request she may have. She lazily looked at him. “Jacques, you seem to be going out more at night? Why is that?” She asked, though she only seemed halfway interested. Jacques mentally sighed. She probably thought that he had a girlfriend or some other romantic interest and she just wanted something to gossip about.

While he did love his mother, she wasn’t a very good one. She often treated him more as an accessory and had hired others to do the “raising” of her only child. He wasn’t sure if that was from his father’s death or the fact that she really only wanted a child to show off, but he had accepted it at this point, and had been hoping to get away for a while. Unfortunately, there hadn’t been many requests for any of his artwork or skills lately, so he had been stuck. Sure, his mother was more than willing to pay for anything that he asked for, he still wanted to just leave and not have her looming over him all the time.

He gave her a small smile. “Actually, I’ve been going out at night to take photographs for inspiration for my paintings and for my ceramics.” He sometimes forgot that she had let him create a ceramics studio in the mansion. One he both loved and hated at the same time. He loved the craft, but hated that it was just another string that his mother tried to pull at times.

His mother sighed, turning her head to the side, no longer looking at him, obviously disappointed that he didn’t have anything else to say. She hadn’t known Jacques to lie, and so accepted his explanation, but not without being put off that her only son wasn’t sneaking out at night to go and have romantic rendezvous. “All right then, I was only curious.” She said, closing her eyes once again and using her hand to motion that he could now leave.

Jacques nodded his head and headed back up the stairs to the painting room. He was glad that she had decided not to interrogate him for hours, but still felt annoyed at the situation anyway. He hoped that this painting would get his mind off of it.

Basic Solo #2: 541 words

Jacques sighed as he closed his 3DS and pausing his game of Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. As much as he wanted to continue it, part of the problem of playing such a game was the fact that he was so limited. Limited by not living in the country it was popular in and therefor missing many patterns that he could have used, but the grid system made it hard to work with. And there were no second floors! How could they do that when the main game had second floors and basements?!

He sighed as he flopped on the couch. He had been trying to use the game to get some ideas of how to re-organize his room again and sell some of his ideas online to potential customers, but he felt himself becoming tired rather than inspired by the game. And he knew that part of it was from running away from studying for finals. He had already spent a lot of time studying for them and had wanted a break that wouldn’t involve some piece of his clothing getting dirty or clay getting all over his hands.

There was nothing though, or at least, nothing in English that he could use that he could find. He supposed he could take up a hobby of learning another language, but he was still trying to learn France French instead of the Canadian French that they decided to teach at school. Because whatever above knew that they couldn’t possibly teach more modern French.

He was just… finding it a bit hard to concentrate was all. During this current semester way too many things had happened, especially since it was the first full semester since he had been “recruited” by the Negaverse, and in that time he had gotten beaten up, almost killed multiple times, went to some fake celebration that turned into a fake circus, and quite a few other things, to the point that he was surprised that he was even getting B’s in his classes. All he wanted was a break! And he would get it with the upcoming summer and only one class to take during it, but still, it was as though his brain had turned to much for now and everything was suddenly catching up to him.

And he couldn’t even go to a therapist about it since most of the problems weren’t from classes but rather the new part of his life that most of the planet didn’t even know was there. Though for a moment he did wonder if they had therapists in the Negaverse. He concluded that they didn’t though, considering that would most likely go against their own interests.

He sighed and got up from the couch to stretch. Well, perhaps he could try something different? They did have a small exercise room in the mansion, perhaps he could start exercising a bit? Or at least taking some walks on the treadmill. As much as he wanted to do it outside, he would have to drive anywhere to go to any parks or trails. Regular sidewalks were too crowded or in disrepair. It was decided then, he would go on the treadmill. Perhaps he could watch a movie while doing it too.

Super Solos #8-10: 1,531 words

Versailles kicked at a rock that was nearby that had come loose. It really shouldn’t have been there. It wasn’t as though he was in a place that was supposed to contain a lot of rocks or had a reason for a small rock to be there. He was just in the park, wandering around, attempting to see if he even had the will to go and drain someone, anyone tonight.

So far, the only thing he had done besides walk was kick the rock from the sidewalk and back into the grass.

It was lucky that the heat wave that had been plaguing the city was finally over, for now. He wondered how many more were to come. Perhaps it was just the first of many. He looked over at the maintained landscape of the park, noting that it had been recently mowed and shook his head. What was the point if it was just going to grow again? If it was just going to wither in the heat and not be enjoyed by those who wanted to wander around the outside instead of being stuck in air-conditioned buildings all the time.

A couple of girls, perhaps middle-school aged past him. The first thought of his was wondering what they were doing out at night. Perhaps their parents didn’t really care? They had apparently looked at him and giggled, and he had decided to flip his overgrown hair at them which led to more giggling and running away into the higher grass. It was only then, when the lights of the park were fewer between, light pollution had apparently been a concern here or they just did it to make it easier for Negaverse Agents to do their work without being caught, that he saw that they were most likely going after the fireflies that were flying around.

He shook his head. It would have been nice to be that age again, without adult worries. Or at least with something to do.

Him? What did he have? He could say he had all the money he needed. He had his own hobbies that he made a bit of money from. He was studying biology and geology. He could find a job afterwards; he had the connections.

But what of it? What was the point? Here he was, wandering about while powered as well, trying to get the tiniest shred of encouragement to do what he had been recruited to do in the Negaverse, something that he had been forced into. They now had some aliens and alien technology on their side…

Was that supposed to motivate him?! He wasn’t sure that he would have gone to the White Moon willingly if he had heard both sides of their arguments before he had been corrupted. The White Moon were supposedly aliens that wanted to take over the Earth or whatnot, doubtful and it was surprising that anyone believed that. As nonchalant as he was and as much as he cared only about himself, he couldn’t help but roll his eyes at the thought that somehow the White Moon were the ones wanting to take over the planet.

Were they the ones stealing life force from everyone else? At least the Dark Mirror declared themselves neutral!

However, he couldn’t say that they would have convinced him to come to their side. A runner passed him with plenty of space in-between them. If they had been any closer, Versailles might have thought of them as a pickpocket and that certainly would have motivated him to drain the civilian. But no. It was just another person going about their day, most likely unaware of the whole magical world going on.

He made sure to keep an eye on the area for any auras though. Even if his hair liked to blind him most of the time, he was sure that the crack in his head could still be seen at times. Though only if someone really paid attention.

While he was annoyed at how he had come to be a part of the Negaverse, he couldn’t say that he was entirely against them at this time either. Going to all the fancy and rich parties that his mother both threw and forced him to attend, it made him want to have some power over those people. To be able to make them squirm and be uncomfortable, forced to face the reality that they seemed to either ignore completely or took delight in creating.

He hadn’t yet had a chance to do it, however. And he hadn’t asked anyone high up if it was something he would be able to do either. And how would he have done it anyway? As much as he liked his powers, they were nothing that really commanded anyone to bow to his will. More to just pay attention to him while he did whatever he wanted.

And, most likely, he wouldn’t be surprised if the Negaverse was either using them to pull some of the strings or… they were Agents themselves. It was quite annoying really. There was barely any information about what Agents they already had on their side, even their names appeared to be complete mysteries unless someone was able to meet and then ask them. And then even their civilian lives were unable to be looked at, even by Generals from what he had heard. One would think that for group that considered themselves to be close-knit and militaristic that they would have personal information on everyone Agent that they had within their ranks, both powered and civilian.

Perhaps that was why they kept losing them. He had heard the rumors. The disappearances of certain agents. The ones that had been forcefully turned he hadn’t been surprised at. After all, they were on the other side at first and if they had been forcefully turned, then it had been against their will. He wouldn’t have been surprised if some of them felt a nagging feeling in the back of their minds that they were missing something. He didn’t know how corruption worked in that sense. He had only been corrupted as a civilian into a Senshi as part of the Negaverse. He hadn’t even bothered to take a mineral name he had been so unconcerned about it.

It was more surprising when they lost Agents to purification who were not forced into the Negaverse. One could surmise that they most likely didn’t like what the Negaverse did. After all, it was all about hurting others by draining and wanting to make humans suffer. And the alliance with the aliens seemed flimsy at best. The Queen was most likely using the aliens only to her advantage and would discard them whenever they were done being useful.

No, it was the ones who appeared to have enjoyed what they had been doing in the Negaverse that they lost. Some went missing, which considering that they didn’t keep track of the Agents in their civilian lives wasn’t too surprising. They could have been taken out by a wild animal for all anyone knew since they apparently believed that their Agents didn’t need to be tracked while as a civilian. There were some that they knew who had purified according to the database. He had read some of it in his spare time, curious as to who had decided to turn traitor.

What he didn’t understand was why. If they had enjoyed being in the Negaverse so much, what had changed their minds, to the point that they actively wanted to switch sides? Yet, he couldn’t find a reason to be in either camp. They both had their positives and Negatives, the Negaverse a bit more so with having to report to a General and collecting energy and whatnot. But he found no compelling reason as to why joining the White Moon would be the better idea, especially if one had gotten to the rank of Captain or even General! Lieutenants he could understand. Less work on the other side, but with a tad more danger due to Agents being more willing to hurt others rather than talk or whatever it was that White Moon did instead of fighting or talking.

But to work so hard just to then throw it away? It bothered him. What was he missing out on that he could find as a White Moon Senshi as compared to being a Corrupt? What was so compelling that one would risk death, and death it would be for traitors or Youmifcation, to want to go to the other side?

There weren’t any entries that he had found in the database from those who had turned traitor by others. Plenty for ones that had been Corrupted and then purified back to their White Moon selves.

He passed by a small pond and looked at his reflection, perfect as it was and draped in moonlight. Was he missing something? Something that would change his mind so completely that he would want to purify?

It made him slightly angry. What, if anything, was the Negaverse keeping away from him?

He was going to find out. Even if it killed him.
