"You're welcome," 'Maini replied, ducking his head, though he couldn't have said if it was out of politeness, respect, or just plain embarrassment. "It's really nice to meet people from home even though we're so far."
His purple eyes lit up as he considered something else.
"You should meet my friends! At least, when they're awake! Onwa'ohuru and Ljena! I'm sure they'd love to come here too!"
He backed up a few steps, grinned, and headed back to those same friends. Maybe Onwa would be awake again. If so, she'd definitely want to come here.

The pair watched him scramble off to his friends before Uthuli moved closer to his mate and sat down so she could lean on him. Aysu seemed to deflate once they were in private again, sighing in relief.
"I guess I needed to hear that more than I thought," she said.
"Mmm," Uthuli murmured, "He seems happy, that's a good sign."
"Do you suppose there's hope that Nina and Ikwezi are OK, too?"
"I do," Uthuli answered, pulling her closer.
They would be able to find out more. Matumaini was not the right lion to ask about the slaves who had ended up on the wrong side of this story, or so it had seemed. Maybe there would be no one to ask directly, but they knew there was much more of the story to hear.
