"I know. I just... am frustrated by the reasons behind it. Life did not want to go my way for... some years." Her eyes just stayed ahead of her, not looking towards him as she spoke about it, her tone somewhat distant in a way that sounded almost like she was trying to disassociate from what she was thinking about as she spoke some. "I won't let it keep holding me back, either."

Dipping into the past, never her favorite topic when talking to... well. Anyone, really.

His comment on her name brought a bright smile to her face, though, because it was the one thing about herself she had no reserves with. "Thank you. It makes me happy, to have a name that I can connect to so very well." She had no idea if anyone else's name ever connected so deeply to what they did, or their life's goals, but it worked for her.

She smiled even more brightly at his question. "I hope to eventually be focusing on the study of Quasars! They're one of my favorite things out there, and I just... Yeah. They're amazing! Amazing and fascinating."

He listened with attention when she spoke, recognizing the distant tone to it. He'd heard similar affectations from a certain someone else, when he didn't want to talk about something, couldn't talk about something, usually something that had him waking up shouting. Or, worse, sobbing. That hadn't happened as much of late, but... Richard could remember when it happened almost nightly.

So he knew to leave well enough alone. It wasn't any of his business, anyway.

Richard, admittedly, had a very neutral view of his first name. It was alright, he supposed, as long as people didn't get too weird with the nicknames. "Rich" made him feel like he was supposed to be a 40-year-old sunglasses-wearing, yacht-cruising serial gambler. The other one, well... If the person wasn't be annoying about it, he accepted it. Normally, it was just "Richard", and he was okay with that. His boyfriend called him by his middle name, as did some of his friends and a couple members of his family that were roughly his own age. That was "Arra". That was a much nicer name that he liked considerably better. Plus, it was his father's great-great-great-great-whatever grandfather's name, so he couldn't contest the family lineage part of it.

"Quasars!" He paused a moment, wracking his brain to remember what, specifically, those were. He liked stars and astronomy, but frankly didn't have the head to do anything professional with it. "...Are those the ones that rotate?"

Seren felt grateful when he did not ask why it did not go her way, when he didn't ask for more details, when he was kind enough to leave things alone. Some people just could not seem to take a hint.

Some people, in fact, seemed to feel that someone mentioning stuff like that, even in a tone of the sort she had used, meant she was inviting them to ask. She did not understand how a brief mention of something could be so misconstrued as to immediately turn into an Ask Me Anything, in their minds. It baffled her, and worried her that people were so... inquisitive with so little reason.

She used the moment of quiet before he spoke to draw herself away from those thoughts. She used some careful breathing, to the best that she could while jogging anyways, and an internal mantra of 'This was the past, this is over, they are gone, I am safe.' to help herself recenter.

When he spoke, though, she blinked, and considered his question, then gave him a small smile and shook her head. "No, quasars are... Man, condensing this stuff is hard... I guess you could say they're the heart of many galaxies, a black hole, with massive gas clouds and they might be part of the birth mechanism of stars. Not sure what you're thinking of, but it might be pulsars."

"Oh! Pulsars!" That was what those were! Though, honestly, quasars sounded cooler than pulsars. The heart of the galaxy? Black holes, with gas clouds, where stars came from? He glanced up towards the sky. With a chuckle, he realized Ignacio's space enthusiasm was continuing to rub off on him. Ignacio was very passionate about space, about stars and galaxies... His eyes lit up when he talked about it, and Richard enjoyed seeing him like that. "Yeah, no, quasars sound awesome to be honest."

Just imagine--maybe how stars were born!

"Oh! Name's Richard--I can't remember if I told you already." The confession came with a quick grin. He... didn't think he had, but with his attention divided between conversing and not running into the young woman he was conversing with, he couldn't say for sure. Besides, he knew he had to start turning back soon, otherwise he'd be missed and worried over, so it was probably proper to make sure he'd actually introduced himself at some point.

"I certainly think they're the more awesome object. I mean, pulsars are pretty cool, and nebulae are amazing... But Quasars just have my utter fascination. The heart of a galaxy. Just think... many light years out there, we're circling around one ourselves." She gave a sigh of happiness, and then grinned.

"But anyways. That's just my little obsession. I wish there was a way I could see such a thing, but... Only in telescopes, you know?"

She blinked as she realized they hadn't even introduced themselves, and she gave a friendly laugh. "Oh man! I'm Seren. A pleasure to meet you, Richard. I told you my name's meaning, but didn't bother to tell you my actual name. How ridiculous of me."

She glanced at a street sign, as they passed it, and nodded. "I need to turn right up at the next corner, so I can finish my loop and be back home..." She said, wanting to be fair.

He laughed as well when she realized she'd never actually given him her name either, "it's okay! And yeah, it's too bad we're limited to telescopes and all that." There were the huge ones at observatories and the like, but that still wasn't like actually being there. He'd settle for going to a dark sky sight, honestly. Supposedly, you could see the Milky Way at dark sky sites. Richard would have to bring Ignacio with him if he ever went--he'd probably love it.

"Oh, that works out then, yeah." He went a different way anyway, in order to loop back around to his own house. "Hey, did you want my number? You can text me yours whenever you want--" if she wanted! "--and we can hang out or something. Talk about stars and homework." He grinned at her. "No pressure though. I know we just met." Being cautious around new people who might maybe be skittish came second nature to him at this point. At this rate, they were nearly up to the next corner, so Richard began to slow down, just in case. Even if she said 'no', it was only polite to actually say goodbye when parting ways.

Seren found herself thinking he had a nice laugh, one that was comfortable and didn't feel as though he was mocking her. That was a nice feeling, and it made her relax just a little more. "Yeah, it's true. But at least we have telescopes. And places without light domes. There's a park not too far from here, edge of the city-ish? Big open space at the center. I like to go there, some nights, because I can see more stars there. It's not like... back home... I grew up in a ******** nowhere town in California's Central Valley, pardon my English."

She sighed a little, as she mentioned home.

"Only thing I miss is how many stars I could see, most nights. But yeah. Someday I want to get to one of the big observatories, and spend a few nights out at it."

She blinked at his number, and then a bright, friendly smile crossed the young woman's face. "That would be lovely!" She came to the corner, and began to jog in place, so she could pull her phone out and enter his number. "I appreciate the lack of pressure. I just... I could use more friends. I've been here in DCU for most of 2 years, but I really hadn't gone out of my way to meet anyone, not related to classes or my tutoring jobs. I need to work on that." Once he had given her his number, she entered it into her phone and sent a quick 'Hey this is Seren's number' text to him, because she was proactive on these things... She didn't want to forget. With that, she gave him another bright smile. "Thank you, Richard, for a nice jog and chat! I'll talk to you later... I think I might be able to sleep now!" She gave him a bright, friendly wave and made her turn, heading for home.
