She managed to control the urge to cry, but she was still tense and worried. However, her expression slowly firmed up, and there was a moment where it wobbled, showing all of that... and then suddenly, like a mask was suddenly put on, her expression became calm and emotionless. Her eyes might have told a different story, and possibly the tension in her shoulders, but otherwise, any sign that she had been upset was gone from her.

It was at that moment that the cat, apparently not satisfied with the full body pets she had been giving him, moved to lay on her arm. She had been going to speak, but what came out was a rather surprised 'Urf!' sound, because the angle her arm had been at, with the sudden weight of the cat... Holy ********, what were they FEEDING this cat, solid steel? She managed to twist her arm enough that it didn't hurt anymore, but even the pain did not break the mask... the only emotion she let show had been the surprise. "He's... on the heavy side, isn't he?" was all she said, however.

Well that, followed by "Would you consider taking notes for the moment? I don't want to pull a muscle trying to get my arm free and... that's my writing hand." She gave a sigh, and refocused on the questions. "Well, we need... 4 questions... Soooo yeah, sure. Gender and age, I suppose, works. Or maybe, for a random thing that probably has no effect on the actual data but isn't too similar to 'what age you enrolled', we could ask height because why the ******** not?" She sounded just as calm as her expression seemed to be, as if she'd switched off all the emotions.

She hadn't, of course. She still was feeling them, and on top of that, exhaustion, but in the moment, she just wasn't going to let this man know she was terrified he was going to lose his temper and beat her.

She used her left hand to give the cat more pets, unable to do much else at the moment, while part of her wondered if she would be able to have time to finish her lunch before they had to GO to class. Her roast beef sandwich she'd made had been good, but the last quarter had been stuffed back in the bag so she could get here on time.

Why the ******** was Faust licking his chops? What competition did the fat cat think he was winning, exactly? Easiest way to break the arm of a student?

Zachariah quirked a brow in Faust's direction, and kept his eyes directly on the cat as he responded, "Yeah, he's a bit of a fat a**. Surprised he can even keep up." The unspoken words there were 'with senshi' or even 'with me,' but he rolled his eyes over back to Seren's suddenly stony face and shrugged his shoulders. "Housecats, happens to the whole lot of them."

He finally sat down, pulling the paper and a pen closer to him. It was easy enough to take notes, especially when they were literally just:

Quote:
Questions:
- Age @ college start
- Major
- Gender
- Height

It did catch his attention that Seren was swearing now, which she definitely was not doing before, but Zachariah also did not particularly care to comment on it. s**t was getting done now. The sooner he could be through with this group project nonsense, the better off he would be. Then his sadistics professor would lay off his oral requirement nonsense and let Zachariah leave this hell.

With an A, hopefully.

"Do you think there is anything else worth asking? Also, when should we bother all these poor assholes with these dumb questions?"

He pulled out another sheet of paper, creating a table where they could input all the answers. If he had a bit more time, he would just make a computerized form for this, but it would not be too hard to transfer this nonsense into Excel later...

Damn, she wasn't even trying to scratch his chest. She wasn't trying to do much of anything. Her hand just sat there, goddamn useless, while he either stared at it or shoved his face into it. The attempt at captive pets backfired hella hard.

It sounded to Faust like they were winding down with their weird-a** project anyway. He got up, shook himself out a little, and licked his lips. He waited over her arm for a long minute as he thought about crossing the damn table — he could probably get this b***h the lift him up and place him over by Zachariah — but he finally padded forward. He made sure to step on everything Zach owned on the way there, too. b***h needed a little more cat fur in his life, especially Guardian Cat fur.

Who you callin' fat, Hydork? This here's UFDA Prime muscle. The best s**t you can get. Ain't no guardian cat fitter than me — those other assholes stick their noses in tech parts all goddamn day and wind up all pale n' soft like you. Faust snorted plaintively.

He stood on Zach's side now, over his arm, and looked around for something to catch his catly interest. He could rub his face on the plainclothes senshi's pen as he was writing… But nah, seemed like work. He could also lay on the page but he did that gimmick already to Sweats McGee. Instead, he just mrred at Zachariah like he was asking for pets, but what he really wanted was for the b***h to hurry up with this s**t because there was probably a Negaverse officer somewhere waiting around for a good a**-kicking, and he wasn't gonna get one i Faust and Hydork were stuck on the goddamn inside of a library.

Both ears flattened, then rotated around as Faust shot him a weird look. Finish yo' s**t.

Seren blinked at the fat a** comment, but did not argue, given that the one time she'd objected to how Zachariah had spoken in regards to the cat's treatment had gone rather poorly. She showed no other response to that, though, and shrugged a little. "I wouldn't know. I was never allowed pets, before, and can't exactly afford one now, much as I wish I could..." She glanced back at the cat, just in time to watch him move. Apparently her petting had not been acceptable, and her eyes were a little disappointed. She did let her fingers drag down his back as he moved away, getting one last, long stroke in.

She nodded thoughtfully at his question, head tilted. "Mmmm I think that's enough? It doesn't show any indication that there is potential for extra credit by asking more, or anything, and neither of us really want to be doing this, so... why the hell should we bother putting more effort in, when this is already miserable?" She sounded a little tired, a little drained, but she also stayed on focus with the issues at hand.

"As for when... Hmm." She blinked a little, then nodded. "How about next Monday? Tonight, when I get home, while my chicken finishes cooking, I can type up a questionnaire format of those questions, and print out the required 50 copies?" Paper, at least, was one thing she never worried about running out of. They seemed to give her plenty of that. "We can do the 'hang out at the student center doors' thing, on the caf side, at lunch, and ask people to fill them out. It'll satisfy this stupid 'oral' part, since we had to ask, and we'll minimize the contact with strangers required. We can then... Oh, you're making a chart. I was thinking we could just take the questionnaires, and tabulate the answers in Sheets. Figured would save us some extra work, but if you prefer that, that's fine too?"

She honestly was surprised, figuring that he'd prefer the simpler route too, but whatever made her work partner happier. "D'ya think we have enough to present our plan to the teacher for approval? Cause if so... I wanna finish my roast beef sandwich, before we go to class... And we have what, fifteen minutes left?" She let herself sound hopeful. No harm in that, she thought. She hoped, anyways.

Of course Faust had to just stride all over his s**t on the way over. Zachariah definitely needed more cat fur. He needed more cat fur like he needed more bee stings, or whatever toxic nonsense they were feeding the students this week at the dining hall...

(Some of that food tasted vile, no matter how much hot sauce he attempted to douse it in.)

Why the hell was Faust staring at him like that? The cat did realize he still had classes to go deal with, right?

He finished with his chart, setting down his pen and looking back up to Seren. He could not exactly afford pets either. He did not want them. He was just, evidently, stuck with cats for the rest of his life. He would not wish them on anyone. The only cats he had dealt with since he had awakened were a pain in the a** in one way or another. Though at least Bernard did not keep nagging him to go on patrol--

"Bare minimum sounds fine to me," replied Zachariah, with a shrug. That was all the effort he preferred to put in to anything that was not explicitly computer-related. "And so does next Monday. It should be fairly easy to finish once we have the data. Figured the chart might make it easier to transfer information from the papers to something we could look at all at once, but Sheets works too. I do not really care, to be honest with you. Whatever gets it done faster."

Whatever got him away from this assignment faster, really.

It seemed she wanted to eat. He did not, but there was no point in stopping her from eating. It was not like they had anything further to work on. "We have a plan. Class is not starting yet. Eat your sandwich."

That might have sounded like a command if he had not shrugged after saying it.

He rolled his eyes towards Faust casually, narrowed his eyes a tad, and asked, almost a bit snide, "Ready for sadistics class?"

Zachariah's snark sounded like a damn good queue to crawl back into the backpack. And Faust was fine with that — seemed like he milked all the pets out of the poor ******** Hydork paired with. And since they weren't handing out fish at the library, he was s**t out of reasons to stick around and pretend to be amicable. Not that he ever pretended to be amicable.

Sneezing at Zachariah's papers, Faust then began his slow retreat back into the backpack. First he nosed at the collapsed zipper, then slipped a paw inside, then nosed the zipper again, then lifted his paw out, then chuffed at it, then nosed it a third time, then shoved his head into it. And from there he slowly wedged his paws inside, then forced the rest of his body in as gracelessly as possible. The backpack itself bulged around as he turned, ever searching for that perfect way to lay.

He never found it. After about six revolutions, he gave that s**t up and laid down. Some papers in there bent underneath him by the feel of it. He hoped they were important.

Maybe he would pee on them if Zach was rough on the ride back out to statistics. Sadistics? Whatever the ******** it was, it sounded boring as s**t. And boring as s**t meant he was sleeping like a rock through it. And then he'd tell Quenton all about this dumbass basic-a** senshi that refused to do his job and went to sadistics classes instead. Where they talked about numbers and s**t.

What a goddamn yawn. Faust was tapping out.

"Yeah, cool. This all works for me." She sighed in relief, that they had gotten this dealt with, and resolved. Now all they had to do was inform the teacher and hope to god his a*****e self didn't decide to deny their choices. She wouldn't put it past the ******** to deny them for some spurious and stupid reason. She began to put her stuff away.

Then she watched the cat go over to the backpack all on his own, her brows raising again. She was impressed. The cat knew hot to get the bag open enough to get in... And knew to go in when they were taking about leaving. "Is he trained to recognize when you're leaving? Or is there some other sort of trigger?" She let her curiosity out into her voice.

Once her stuff was packed, she pulled out the sandwich, and looked around... they WERE in the library after all... Once she was sure there was no one who was going to chase her off, or some s**t, she unwrapped the roast beef, and began to eat, fast. Not 'going to get sick/hiccups' fast, but fast enough that she would be done before statistics, and fast enough she had to hold it over the bag as she ate, because it was a little juicy. She'd have offered to make Zachariah one, but it hadn't occurred to her, and it might have been weird, anyways, to make food for someone she hadn't even really met.

Once it was done, she shoved the baggie back into her bag, closed it, and stood. "Yeah. Let's go deal with this s**t, and make sure the head Sadist doesn't disapprove of our plan for our project. Think we can get there early enough to get approval before class?" She began to head for the door.

Of course Faust had to take a moment to sneeze at his papers before actually going back into his bag. Because of course he did.

He watched, unimpressed, as Faust got the backpack open, squirmed around in a incredibly graceless manner, and eventually just flopped down. He knew Faust was probably laying all over his papers. Zachariah honestly barely cared. Hopefully the cat had not managed to bend a folder, though. He preferred his folders to be not creased. Creases pissed him off. That was the same reason why he insisted on ironing his clothes, even when it was not totally necessary.

"Hm?" Zachariah lifted his brows, looking back to Seren. Was she actually impressed? Why?

He supposed Seren had no idea of the cat's sentience. It was likely fair of her to be more impressed by his behaviour.

He would go with her assumptions. It was simpler than attempting to come up with another lie. "Yes, he has learned to pick up when I am shifting towards a door. Honestly, the training that proper support animals are put through is quite extensive." As he spoke, he pulled the zipper up just a tad -- not enough to suffocate the cat, but enough to stop Faust from being thrown out of the bag.

Zachariah was at least that considerate.

Once Seren finished scarfing down her sandwich -- and Zachariah had no interest in one, she need not worry about offending him -- he plucked up the backpack and, nearly as gracelessly as he had flopped it down, swung it back over his back.

"Would be ideal," replied Zachariah, with a snort, heading out with her.
