Leukos nodded his head ever so slightly as Sajah elaborated on the details of his skillset, keeping a mental list for later. He had suspected that Sajah had been used for some variety of manual labor - something physical - judging from his build and general appearance. But if he was being totally honest, it was a bit reassuring to learn that it hadn’t been a lifestyle of solely thieving, ring fighting, or any other unsavory business. This way, at least he was accustomed to working in a straightforward manner. That was, of course, if Sajahka was being completely truthful with him. He’d have to just assume he was.

But all in all, these revelations helped put Leukos further at ease; perhaps it would all work out after all. He sighed, smiling for the first time since he’d seen Sajahka again. «That is perfect; I think I can work with that. One of our workhands actually just left us because he’s moving across the bay with his new wife, so we’re short a man. You came at a good time.»

As the wagon came to a halt in the main hub of the facility, he quickly signed, determination alight in his eyes. «So just follow my lead, and try to look genuine, okay? My boss is like a bloodhound when it comes to lies.» He clapped Sajahka on the shoulder, speaking aloud again for the convenience of anyone that might be listening. “Well, it sucks that all of your money got taken, but don’t worry, maybe we can get you a job here, since Mr. Dullaney is looking for help anyways.” He hopped down, addressing the rest of the cart. “Thanks again as always for the ride: I’m just going to take care of this real quick, so could you tell Carlyle where I am if he asks?”

The others dismounted as well, grunting or offering other forms of affirmation. Greer still managed to look a little leery, fiddling with a knob on his instrument as he looked at Leukos. “Are we still up for lunch then, or are you going to be busy with your…” He glanced at Sajahka for a moment. “...friend?”

“Oh, yeah, sorry, probably not,” he said, hand on hip. “If he does get hired, I’d like to make sure he’s settled in, especially on the first day. But don’t worry, I’m all yours on the ride back, promise!”

“Well, alright then,” the boy mused, turning to leave. “Hope everything goes well.” He spared one more look at Sajahka over his shoulder, and then he was off.

Leukos sighed, mumbling a bit to himself. “Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to sign right away...hopefully he doesn’t think we’re trying to hide something…” But then he smacked his lips, turning Saj’s way again. “Well, it can’t be helped. Ready to give this a shot?”

Perfect.’

Sajahka felt an immediate sense of relief and — almost? — abashment. His skill set was not much, but when put in perspective, he truly wasn’t useless. He had a strong, healthy body for all it had been put through, a mind to listen and take needed instruction, and a strong work ethic, provided sufficient motive. And he knew all that. It was just difficult to feel sometimes when nothing else was going one’s way. But now, for this moment at least, the air seemed to be lighter around him. Leukos had not sent him away. He really was here, speaking with him, on his way to a serious attempt at getting a real job, and it actually sounded as though it might very well work out that way.

And Leukos was smiling.

He could get used to seeing more of that, again.

A tentative bud of renewed hope, and something perhaps even close to excitement, stirred in his chest. At Leukos’ repeated reminder to attempt to come off ‘genuine’ Sajah could only nod. It wasn’t as though he could lie to the man regardless, and he certainly genuinely wanted the work. He supposed he just hoped he didn’t look untrustworthy by default.

It wasn’t perhaps the most encouraging thought, but there wasn’t much to be done about what he already was.

As they arrived, disembarked, and Leukos made his parting comments to the boy with the instrument, Sajahka’s attention trailed briefly there while the boy retreated. «Who is he?» he asked. «And yes.» His eyes moved to the main building, and drew a breath, rolling his shoulders. «Bring on the master.»

“Hmm, the boy?” Leukos said, watching his back as it retreated further from view, ducking into the room staff used for personal storage. “His name is Greer. He’s hopelessly smitten with this girl, and aims to sweep her off her feet with a song he wrote. His deadline is her birthday at the end of the month, but he only just started learning to play the lute in order to surprise her, so I volunteered to help tutor him. Though I’m not so sure if he’s destined to ever really master the strings…”

He shook his head, laughing lightly. “But he has a lot of heart, and a stubborn determination bordering on obsession. He’s still nervous, but I think his lady-love will adore it no matter what; girls always seem to fancy musicians~” With a wry grin, he winked down at Sajahka, beginning the walk to the main building.

It was nice to have simpler things on his mind to distract from the nervousness that was gnawing holes into his composure. Entering through the impressive wooden doors into the lobby, Leukos turned his attention to the half-open dutch door to the side, wrapping his knuckles on the lower frame. “Good morning Emylia, has Dullaney arrived from his property yet? I have something I’d like to ask him before I get started for the day.”

Looking up from the paperwork under her nose, a slim-faced Matoran woman answered his question. “Hello to you too, Leukos. And yes, he arrived a bit earlier than usual today, on accounts of ensuring that large shipment of feed made it here without any hitches. Unloading it all took a bit longer than he’d thought, but that’s to be expected, with staffing what it is at the moment. Granting me the privilege of adding a brand new stack of papers to my work for the day.”

Leukos hummed sympathetically, rubbing his fingers across the wood grain. “Well, I hope I can help with the situation: I’ve brought some backup today.” At his statement, the woman looked past Leukos for the first time, addressing Sajahka’s presence with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. But her attention was quickly diverted once Lukos tapped the frame once again. “In any case, don’t let yourself get buried in here; the day looks like it will turn out to be a beautiful one. You should come outside and eat lunch with the rest of us...I’d hate to see that lovely glow leave your face by working too hard.”

The older woman puffed, grinning sardonically. “You know, some people are immune to your flirting; though I’m sure you find that hard to believe.” She waved her quill like a fly-swatter, shooing him away. “Take your charms somewhere else: I’ve got work to do.”

Leukos for his part shrugged in ambivalent defeat, turning away from the opening to face Sajahka again. “Some call it flirting, I call it flattery; she really does have very nice skin, very youthful for someone her age.” That last part he said loud enough to be clearly heard, earning a huffy grunt from the woman in the small room. He grinned in impish satisfaction.

Greer.

Sajahka snorted softly, amused as much as anything by the explanation. How kind of you to assist him… And there was earnesty in the thought, despite the oddness of the boy. It was a time consuming thing to teach, and for no real perceivable benefit of Leu’s own, other than perhaps the company or the satisfaction of benevolence. Whatever that was worth.

At Leukos’ wink, though, the corner of his lip edged up in spite of himself. «I am sure he appreciates your efforts. It’s very generous of you.»

And he followed the rest of the way in silence, observing instead as they went. There was no shortage of new information to take in through that alone, and he felt a renewed sense of being distinctly out of place when he was lead through the impressive entryway. He was too dirty to be here. He tucked the thought under the rest, sparing a glance to the floor behind him suspiciously, as though he might be leaving a trail others would find offensive. But it didn’t appear to be that bad. A few scuffs of boot dirt were surely not out of place on a ranch in any case.

Emylia looked busy, and at the mention of ‘with staffing what it is at the moment’ he felt another slight swell of hopeful interest. Leukos had said they were low, and to hear a second mouth confirm it was reassuring.

«You are a flatterer and a flirt.» So long as the positive attention wasn’t unwelcome, though, and it hadn’t seemed to be, Sajah saw no harm in it. It seemed to be a natural state of being for Leukos so far as he could discern, and surely most of his co-workers were familiar with it by now. «She seemed to like it.»

“Mm, I suppose I can’t argue with that,” he hummed, beginning his walk once again. Past the large doors leading into stables, down a wide hallway, ignoring other doors along the way, until they reached the end of the hall. This door appeared no different than the rest - aside from the letters 'R.D.’ carved into the wood in capped serifs - but the energy surrounding Leukos that had grown lighter moments earlier, significantly mellowed as he brought his hand up. With a steadying breath, and a small smile at Saj, he rapped on its wooden face.

A pause, then a muffled voice from inside. “Come in.”

Leukos gripped the latch, swinging the door inward. Stepping into the room, he passed far enough inside for Saj to comfortably enter after him. Everything about the space gave the impression of being inhabited by a person who knew they had a lot of money - and was expected to display a certain amount of this wealth - but wasn't inclined to trade flair for function. It was large enough to be comfortable for multiple bodies, with one or two pieces of tasteful art, and furniture that looked subdued, yet well made. The man behind the desk conveyed the same energy, looking up from the reports in his weathered hands.

“Hello Leukos. I don't believe I was expecting you, was I?” He glanced at a paper on his desk, the itinerary for the day written up by the woman they had just spoken to.

“No sir, there were no plans made. I just needed to talk to you about something unexpected that came up,” Leukos said, shutting the door behind them.

Reevus set the reports down, swiveling his attention from Leukos to the stranger in his office. “And who is this?”

Leukos touched the pads of his fingers to Sajah's lower back for a moment, setting about explaining the situation. “First, I'd like to start by setting up some transparency: he’s a mute. But he knows the sign language used in Oba, which I understand: so I apologise if I do most of the talking. But he can still hear everything perfectly fine, so please, feel free to ask him any questions, and I can translate.”

Withdrawing his hand, he began again. “This is my friend, Sajahka. He's come into some rather bad luck recently, and I was hoping to perhaps get his feet back on the ground. The friend he'd come to Matori with just up and left, and took most of what they had, without warning him. I told him he should come stay with me until he found a job here in the city, but on the way over, he actually got robbed. So by the time he finally made it to my place, the inn keeper wouldn't let him in, because he had no way of proving I had invited him. So he had to sleep outside all night, and walk all the way over here, so that's why he…”

Leukos paused, gesturing vaguely at Sajahka. “...is in such a sorry state: I apologise for the smell. We had planned on setting up an official meeting with you, since I know we're a bit understaffed at the moment - and he's actually worked for a trader before - helping with shipments and the like. He's a strong, hard worker, and he does not mind doing messy, taxing jobs. But...things got set a bit off track; I wasn't expecting him here this morning. But I figured that since he's here now, we might as well ask: would it be a possibility for him to get a job here?”

As much as Leukos found lying distasteful, he felt that at least, in this particular instance, he was doing it to help someone who was really at the end of their rope. And besides: most of it was true.

Technically.

Sajahka took in his surroundings with attentive interest, and appreciated immediately — despite never having been privy in detail to such things himself — the worth of what he passed by, even on the way forward. He had almost exclusively been assigned outdoors, to grunge work, and his masters were not as wealthy as Nyko’s—but he had seen it before, and he found that this was an especially tasteful variant on the display. Especially when he was lead inside, to the room where Leukos’ ‘boss’ — not Master, he reminded himself — waited.

It was oddly rewarding to see a Matorian man of power, and surroundings which all represented that, but in a less grotesque and offensive way than the Obans always seemed to manage. Though perhaps there was no real reason yet for it to, some of Sajah’s tension eased simply to stand in the room.

He was still out of place. He was still filthy.

But he did not feel as he suspected he would have surrounded by a gaudier and more mocking display of wealth. He could respect this. And so his hands folded loosely before him, body assuming on instinct a sort of lax position of attention and readiness. Awaiting instruction.

Leukos’ fingers touched to his lower back, and for a single instant, he forgot everything else about his surroundings, a peculiar focus honing on the touch as a very reactive and unasked for heat threatened to climb his throat.

Leukos removed his fingers.

And he was saying…something. Sajahka turned his attention back on track. The man had just promised he could hear perfectly, so it seemed he should likely be able to demonstrate that if necessary. Where were they?

I apologize for the smell.

Oh.

He shifted his shoulders, setting them back and attempting to posture himself to appear as strong and hard working as Leukos promised. His mind happened to find it easier to flit back to the press of his fingertips, but that really was not the matter on the table, was it?

«I will work for anything,» he signed. Though livable wages would be preferred, anything above nothing was a step up. «Also…for one who insisted I present myself honestly, you lie well, and I-» Don’t think you owe it to me? Of course he didn’t. Wish you didn’t? That wasn’t really the truth, though it might have been easier for everyone if he hadn’t needed to. «Thank you…again.»

Leukos kept his frowning internalized, trying to not latch on too much to Sajah's statement: he surely meant it as a compliment. And Leukos really should not be offended; he was a performer - selling a story is what they do. At least he seemed to really appreciate how far Leukos was sticking his neck out for him.

And to avoid undue suspicion, he simply opted to nod when Sajah thanked him again, assuming he'd get the message. If not, he could broach the subject later, when they didn't have to worry about anyone else watching. It was irrelevant at the moment.

“He'd like to add that he is more than willing to work for any wages you'd be inclined to supply.”

A pause as he processed what was said, then Reevus spoke. “So he was a laborer?”

Leukos nodded, elaborating on what he'd already said. “Yes, mostly outdoor work. But not just shipping; he can handle upkeep as well. And he's told me that he has worked with large animals many times, so you wouldn't have to worry about any trouble with the mounts here.”

The older man looked Saj over from where he sat, assessing him as one might a horse. He seemed reasonably pleased with what he saw, grinning a tad. “He looks like he'd fit the bill: where are his references?”

Leukos felt a lump of lead replace the place where his heart have been. s**t. Of course he'd want to see those. “Well, he…”

Left them back in his old place, and can't get them because he's been locked out?

Lost them when his bag was stolen?

A few more excuses ran through his head, glancing Saj's way. But seeing Dullaney’s face...he just couldn't. It wasn't like he couldn't think of good reasons for the papers to be missing. But that lie would require another to back it up, and then another after that, until it just got to a point where it would weave a spider’s nest of cover ups and excuses. He would get caught eventually; it was only a matter of time. It was too dangerous, without enough of a payout.

It was a risk he wasn't willing to take.

“He does not have any,” Leukos admitted, clasping his hands. “Truthfully, he's never had a real job.”

Might as well commit to the truth.

“Because he was a slave.” He looked Saj's way, resigning himself to honesty. “As you know, that kind of lifestyle leaves little room for laziness.”

Sajahka’s attention moved between the two men, but in the end, the landed focused on the man who would be his ‘boss’ if matters were successful. It was still a strange concept. He had never officially served anyone but a master. But, as his eyes ran over him—he found he was much like the room on first impression.

Serious, not flashy. Professional, dignified. Efficient.

When the man looked his way, Sajah kept his eyes forward, ready to meet the man’s gaze if he did. And he was very familiar with being looked over much like a bred animal. But it wasn’t as insulting under the circumstances. If anything, it was satisfying that the man didn’t look disappointed with what he saw.

Where are his references?

Sajahka made a snort of sound in spite of himself, and before Leukos could even try to lie for him there, he raised his hands to answer for himself and make clear-

But Leukos was more quick. He does not have any…because he was a slave.

And Sajah breathed out, some unspoken tension relaxing from his shoulders. Good.

He shouldn’t have to lie on that front. He wouldn't have wanted Leu to. He had nothing to be ashamed of with respect to it.

Sajah held his eyes on the man before him, in his grand room, on his property, where he — a Matorian man in his own right — had made his wealth and set his token. «I carried Oban men’s property, broke their ground, lead their beasts, and cleaned their waste for a dozen years. I would sooner serve a man of my own blood, and I can learn any task you set me to, but if it involves only sweat, I am already capable. I swear on my name you will have no trouble from me.»

As Sajahka began presenting his thoughts on the matter, Leukos did his best to put them into spoken words when they left Saj's hands. And it was hard to place a finger on it, but he perhaps...felt something like…pride? For him? He had shown up here today, completely out of the blue, threatening to set Leukos’ new life helter skelter. He'd been concerned, to put it lightly.

Bringing him in had been a risk, a walking liability. But in a moment of irrational generosity, he'd decided it was worth it.

And yet, in just the short period of time since his arrival, Leukos felt like he was learning more about the silent boy than he had spending weeks with him. And as it turned out, he was far more earnest than he had assumed. Perhaps the rocky start to their relationship had been based on necessity - two boys cast out into the world with few options and doing what they could to survive - and not a deliberate choice made by a hardened criminal.

It was a pleasant thought: one he hoped would prove to be true.

Reevus sat, and listened, and watched, collecting information along with other signifiers; the weight of breath, movement of eyes, body language. He was a man accustomed to figuring out what something was thinking - even when it lacked the ability to speak.

His hands came up to rest on the desk, linking his fingers together. “I will be honest with you boys: this is highly irregular. This is a facility with a name that carries some weight to it: my name carries weight. People expect a level of quality and results from the work we put in here. And it's not as simple as just moving crates around or pulling crops from the ground: the merchandise we handle are living, breathing creatures. They are not just numbers in a log book, and they deserve the best from us: we shape their future.”

He leaned forward. “So I expect the best staff. I look for talent, and I look for quality: no one gets hired here without my approval. And to bring someone here that I do not know,” his gaze specifically locked on Leukos. “Is a gamble I do not usually take. Save your unfortunate lapse in judgement-”

Leukos’ cheeks flushed, looking down at his hands guiltily.

“-things have worked out how I had hoped.”

Now his gaze drilled in on Sajahka, not overtly threatening, but carrying a silent challenge. “Can you assure me that a similar gamble will not backfire? Because there is nothing I value more than this place, and what I have created. The name I have created: you are not the only one to have been shaped by the trials of the desert.”

Leukos opened his mouth to answer, but was silenced by a raised hand, the man keeping his eyes locked on Sajahka. “No; I need to know that if something needs to be brought to my attention, he is capable.” Sliding a blank paper across the woodgrain like pawns on a chessboard, he hefted a fountain pen, placing it at the center. “So, answer me.”

My name carries weight.

Sajahka’s gaze, once on the man then, did not budge. He was accustomed to both pride and power, and the myriad ways the two could interact depending upon how much of one or the other one had—and perhaps even more pivotally, the character underneath. It was evident this man had both, but based on the way he spoke of his animals alone, Sajah found himself satisfied that neither had done to him what it had done to some, and given the proper opportunity, he felt he could want to work for him. Not simply for his own reasons, out of necessity or lack of better options, but because he wanted to be worth that stare, and exceed whatever base expectation was there.

Be part of something worth having pride for.

When the man’s gaze met his, he held it unflinchingly, and at the question, he rolled his shoulders, prepared to sign and have Leukos translate—but instead, there came paper. Sajah glanced from it, back up to the man’s eyes. His handwriting was not the best, nor his literacy in general. But it was passable, and under the circumstances, it would have to do.

He strode forward, feeling a renewed quickness to his pulse as his boots closed space between them and brought him before the desk. He should have washed. He pushed the thought from his mind, and picked up the pen. It felt strange to hold. Precise and more refined than any writing instrument he’d been privy to. But highly functional just the same. He settled his hand over the paper:

bet on me

Sajahka scrawled the words with brisk decisiveness, and drew a sharp line under them after before setting the pen down. When he signed, his attention was on the man behind the desk, but he shifted to stand so that Leukos could at least see. «Give me a chance to show you you won’t regret it, and you won’t.»

Even though he knew full well that Sajahka knew how to read and write, Leukos still felt a nervous twist in his chest as the paper was slid towards him; like a parent as their child is asked the winning question at the spelling bee. This may well be one of the most important things Sajah has ever written in his life; and all Leu could hope was that he didn't ******** up somehow.

Bet on me

Leukos released a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding, tension relaxing from his shoulders in one go. It was a good response: it answered the question, while showing at the same time that Saj was actually pretty clever. He understood everything that was being said, what was happening here. And with a lighter chest, he translated for Saj once again.

Demonstrating his unending patience, the elder man sat and waited until all had been 'said’. With a glance down at the now marked piece of paper, he once again turned his attention towards Leukos.

“If I accept your friend into my ranks, it will be on your personal recommendation. Anything he does, or does not, will reflect upon you. So I ask: can you vauche for the the dependability and honest character of this man?”

The irony of the question was not lost on Leukos. He could vauche for Saj: that he had, in layman's terms, a rather rocky concept of morals. He'd been personally stolen from, for goodness sake: Leukos should know more than anybody that he could not be trusted.

And yet.

“I can honestly say that despite any bumps along the way, he has proven I can trust him. He is not perfect - it is difficult for anyone to be - but...when he makes mistakes, he learns from them. And even when it would be easy to take the low road, he chooses to be earnest instead,” he said, taking a step forward as he looked at Saj’s eyes. “I will take responsibility for him.”

The last part of his statement was left unsaid, directed at Said himself: so please don't let me down.

The man behind the desk looked between the pair of them. And then:

“Alright, I am open to this gamble,” he stated, taking the slip of paper and moving it aside. “This first day will be a trial run, one you will not be paid for: I assume this will not be an issue. You will be reporting directly to my Head of Maintenance, Bryton. He will give you your assignments, and oversee their completion: I will inform Emylia to let him know to be expecting you. And if things go smoothly, we will begin the necessary paperwork for making you an official part of the team. We will discuss wages and scheduling at that time.”

Standing, he cracked his knuckles, smiling outright for the first time since they walked in. “You will find that I have high expectations, but we do not make them hard to meet at this place. If you need assistance, or clarification, it is better to ask for help once than clean up your mess many times. I am sure your handicap has made life difficult this far, but I trust you will adapt for these new challenges as well,” he said, extending his weathered hand Saj's way. “I look forward to seeing how you fair.”

Can you vauche for the the dependability and honest character of this man?

Sajahka managed to keep his face neutral, but there was a moment where he felt both amused at the irony and anxious in kind at how exactly Leukos would respond. He had been vouching for him this far, but it was probably more of a stretch given the man’s experience with him to say that he was ‘dependable and honest’. But Leukos pleasantly surprised him. And perhaps that part shouldn’t have been a surprise.

When Leukos met his stare, I will take responsibility for him… Sajahka held the gaze, and gave a single nod.

Of course, the final decision was still on the man before them, and when Sajah looked again—Alright, I will take this gamble…—for a moment, he felt suspended in time as his mind processed. That was it. He had said yes. Heat — from relief, gratitude, sheepishness, excitement — warmed his cheeks and earfins as they flicked, and quite of its own regard, Sajahka felt his lips pull into an abashed grin.

He listened as the man gave his initial instructions, and was paying him mind, though there was an undercurrent to it all of giddy disbelief. This was actually happening. It occurred to him to wonder why such a prospect had never seemed plausible before. He hadn’t even considered attempting to find ‘real work’ after attaining his freedom. But the answer to that was also immediately evident: because Nyko had wanted to be a world famous singer.

It hadn’t exactly left time or opportunity for Sajahka to think about what might play on his own strengths or give him any sense of stability. He had planned on being unseen support indefinitely. As much as it still panged him to think about, perhaps this was not merely better for Nyko, but better for him as well.

Reevus extended a hand, and Sajahka’s eyes locked on it with startlement before hopping up to the older man’s gaze as his heart gave a half stammer in his chest. His hands were dirty. But the man had offered, and no matter how far and how well the man had climbed — You are not the only one to have been shaped by the trials of the desert… — they were both men, and Sajahka could certainly appreciate the gesture. He took it, and gave a nod of affirmation.

I look forward to it, too.

He did not know yet where he would be staying or when his next meal would be, but he suspected that in Leu’s company those would at least not need to be immediate concerns. And he felt…good. Anticipative of what was to come. Eager. Ready. It would be the first time he had operated fully of his own devices, and while not all things were answered yet, a good start was well underway.

This independence was probably overdue.

Mr. Dullaney sat in his chair, picking up his abandoned reports once again. “You are excused from your duties for the time be, Leukos; until you are able to get him up and running with his supervisor. I'd usually leave the tour of the grounds for someone else, but seeing as you are the only one he can talk to, it doesn't make sense for this particular case. Try to be as quick and efficient as you can so that you can get to your tasks for the day. But don't rush yourself: I want him to understand how we run things here.”

Leukos nodded in confirmation. “Yes sir. Did you need anything else before we get started?”

“No, go ahead,” he said, looking down at his papers. But then, a pause, as he pursed his lips to look at the boys again. “Actually, yes. Don't go anywhere else until you've taken care of that smell; he looks like s**t.”

Leukos snorted, covering his mouth as he looked over at Saj; he was glad someone said it. It was even better coming from his boss.

The man said it with no malice, or mockery; he was simply stating the facts. And his eyes lightened, humor creeping into his tone. “Lest he earn some s**t-based nickname from the other guys; they can be rather merciless. And get him a sandwich or something, since I assume he missed breakfast. I wouldn't want anyone fainting on my watch.”

He looks like s**t.

Sajahka’s eyes flit Leu’s way when the man snorted, and—well, perhaps he couldn’t blame him. It was surely true. He felt like it, or certainly had when he had walked in, and there wasn’t much hiding his state from anyone. If anything, he could stand to be relieved that it was now set to be one of the first issues resolved. He didn’t have to be as prim or particular about it as Leu or Nyko to appreciate a thorough wash.

It would feel good to be clean.

And it had been embarrassing enough being taken for a homeless beggar at the outer gate of the establishment. Now that he was actually going to work here, he could appreciate the value in at least trying to make a positive impression out the door.

Then, at the mention of food, his stomach rumbled, and Sajah flushed. When had he last eaten? ‘Too long ago,’ seemed to be the only forthcoming answer, and there wasn’t much excuse for it. Though he had departed from Nyko without taking more than the clothes on his back and his blades, he could have pinched a proper breakfast and supplemented his energy.

He simply hadn’t thought much on it. He had had goals and uncertain resolutions, and little concept of whether there would be much of anything for him in the world if something did not begin to go ‘right.’ Now that that was behind him, however, and all his most immediate concerns were seen to, it left time and thought to truly appreciate his hunger.

Glancing to the man — Reevus, his boss if he managed not to mess up, which he fully intended not to — Sajahka gave a small, stiff bow. «Thank you.» And then, so far as he was concerned when he looked to Leu, he was ready: for an opportunity to clean, to eat, and to begin facing whatever future came after that.

“I’ll take care of that right away. And he says ‘thank you’, by the way,” Leukos said, opening the door once more. He waited for Saj to step outside, and then turned, dipping into a kurt bow. “And I'd like to thank you as well, for hearing us out. I hope the rest of your day treats you well.”

Then he passed into the hallway as he shut the door, heaving a sigh. He felt fried, though he hadn't done any work yet. But he felt good, like he'd just succeeded at a daunting task. “Well, that couldn’t have gone better,” he said with a grin, beginning to walk again. And then they were out of the clean lobby and onto the compacted dirt of the courtyard again. He stretched, cracking his back with a satisfied twinge. It was still disgustingly early in the morning, the sun just barely over the horizon, but those were the terms of his employment; he shouldn't complain. “Alright, let's clean you up. I'll try to explain as we go: two birds one stone.”

So he led Saj on a bit of a walk, around the building and past some stables as he delivered the details of the ranch to him. Corrals of various sizes, containing various animals, were spread throughout the property, some of the beasts inside lifting their heads to watch as they passed. Others couldn't quite be bothered to care about the small two legged creatures in their midst. At a large covered building with a sizely pond fenced off next to it, Leukos pulled the latch, sliding the door open. The smell of moisture and animals swept outside like a startled flock of birds, immediate and overwhelming. But Leukos seemed unfazed by it, ushering Saj inside as he slid the door shut again.

One long stone corridor, punctuated by barred doors, stretched the length of the tall building. “You're going to get pretty familiar with this place. It may seem utilitarian, but the living conditions for the animals here are specifically designed to take their needs into account,” he said, boots clicking against the stone pavers as he paced onward. “If we left it more open, they would just climb right out, the slippery devils. You have to really watch them; they are very smart animals.”

Leukos stopped in front of one of the barred doors, motioning inside. “Each snapptrotter gets his own room. The walls are left sheer, so that they are unable to climb. But just to be sure, Dullaney specifically designed this building to have bars on the open rooftop, keeping them inside, but letting sunshine in. We keep the shutters closed at night, to keep the warmth inside while they sleep. Someone should be opening them pretty soon, since the sun is rising.”

He paused, smiling. “But this girl tends to be an early riser; she likes to be awake for when breakfast comes.” Inside, a large shape moved in the dim, dragging its considerable weight across the sand. Two emerald eyes winked like green stars in the dark as the reptilian beast came to the gate, grumbling lowly in its throat as it stuck the tip of its snout between the bars as far as it would go.

Leukos reached, running his palm along the scally length. “Good morning, Beautiful. I see you are as impatient as ever. But you know I don't have that job, so just wait a bit longer. That might just end up going to my friend here.” He scratched under her chin, crouching down. “His name is Sajahka, but he's new; I trust you will give him a warm welcome. Don't let the other boys pick on him, okay?”

He looked up at Saj, grinning. “Her name is Esmera. She pretty much runs this place. So if you get on her good side, none of the others should give you any trouble.”
