Anxious Friend

PostPosted: Sun Feb 11, 2018 9:55 pm

Aiden’s hand rested on the small of Alexandre’s back, an amused smile crinkling the corner of his eyes as he looked down at his partner. Every year was the same, always put off or grumpy because of things that happened while he was still in grade school, a time way before the two of them had even met but he’d heard stories from friends and Alex’s cousin Claire when she came to visit.

“You know, we really didn’t need to come if you didn’t want to. I just figured since it was for charity you’d like to get out of the house and do something a bit different.” Aiden turned to stand toe to toe with Alex. “You seemed to enjoy yourself at the last one.” The low cadence of his voice was all but drowned out by the musicians playing at the other end of the room and chatter going on beside them save for the one it was directed to however it seemed to suggest he meant more than just the hospital grand opening gala they attended almost a year prior.

After re-adjusting the boutineer that was pinned to his partners vest, Aiden pressed a kiss to Alexandre’s forehead, much to the blonde’s known aversion to any sorts of public displays of affection. “We can leave whenever you want, I just hope you’ll have at least one dance with me.” His expression mirrored that of a hopeful kid waiting for a reward as he stepped back so Alex could breath before guiding him to one of the buffet table lines.

He knew, and had known for years, that it was rather immature of him to let things from grade school get to him like this - to let them linger. It was, in his opinion, the only immature thing about him and he was ok with it. For as snobbish as he could be was still young and perhaps this was one in which his youth showed?

Looking up at his partner, tilting his head a bit, he shook his head slowly. "No, no it's fine. I'm ok with this, although the decorations I could do without." Actually the idea of setting fire to them was rather appealing, or in some way removing and possibly destroying them. He didn't say this however, knowing his words wouldn't be appreciated by outsiders and that it might make Aiden feel bad for asking him to come.

"Mmm, that event wasn't bad and charity events are a worthwhile cause." In a city like this they really were, never mind the fact he was in some small way a part of the cities problem. Lifting his head at the kiss pressed to his forehead, not at all surprised from the others gentle display of affection, his own blue grey eyes seeking Aiden's own blue eyes. "Only one dance? I do hope that doesn't mean you plan on dancing with other people tonight and leaving me sitting alone at a table, since I know you like to dance." Gently teasing, but also hinting at more than one shared dance. Though honestly he would never be the dancer his partner was, and he was ok with that.

"You'll just have to forgive me if I step on your feet." Speaking up, to be heard over the music playing, as he let himself be led towards the buffet line. Something light to eat, and maybe a drink, before a dance though.

It hadn't been so long since he'd last spent time with Fiona, he really did owe her for the help she'd provided in baking. He figured this was a good chance for him to thank her and spend some time with his former girlfriend, he still regretted that things between them had ended.

When he'd heard about the charity event he'd thought of her, and maybe he'd also thought of them, and via text message he'd asked her if she'd come with him. That had been a week ago, he hadn't been sure she'd step away from the tv where the Olympics were playing as he was unsure what the ice skating schedule was, so he'd been happy when she had agreed to join him for the charity event.

Knowing he had a bad habit of being late, for nearly everything, Fionan had left early in order to meet Fiona at the event. In the hopes of being on time he'd taken a cab as well, something he'd normally never do, he figured a cab was more likely to be on time than he was left to his own devices as he seemed to be unable to do anything on time. He was, predictably, a bit late but it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. Now to see where Fiona was, as she was surely here already...at least he hoped so. She wasn't the sort to stand him up, that wasn't like her, but she could be running late as well.

Robert Banks

It had only taken minutes upon entering the ballroom for Robert Banks to make two assessments.

The first was the location of all of the alcohol on the premises. It appeared that most of it was stemming from the bar set-up they had to the side, close to the buffet style catering service. The waiters and waitresses who carried around glasses of champagne on their trays were coming and going from this particular bar, so the dark haired lawyer made sure to locate himself as far from that particular location as possible.

The second was that he was almost immediately regretting his decision to attend. He’d debated whether or not he was ready to return to the public eye, outside of the office, and as the overwhelming amount of chatter and noises began to surround him and the sturdy chair he’d clasped his hand upon, he knew he’d made the wrong call.

His candy bag had been discarded on the table’s top; maybe he’d toss it to K to give his little girl, or put it at the front desk at the office. Sweets seemed about as appealing to him right now as a hole in the head did - nothing could curb the low gnawing in the pit of his stomach, it seemed. Still, he pretended like it wasn’t there, plastering a smile on his face and ignoring the way his sleeve seemed to swallow his arm as he lifted the flute of water up to his lips.

There were a few business cards slipped into the front pocket of his suit but he was starting to feel like ducking out of this little soiree was the better idea than trying to schmooze on a few new clients.

Maybe next time, perhaps.

Paul Jones

Suits and fancy affairs were not Paul’s forte.

If he had his way, he’d live every day out in workout clothes or jeans. Ties and dress shirts and godforbid tuxedos required far too much effort to end up looking like a damn penguin, of all things. It was uncomfortable, like a layer of skin that he couldn’t peel out of fast enough - but he knew that this sort of shindig was right up his cultured, handsome husband’s alley and it was Valentine’s Day, so…

“Can I take my jacket off now?”

He knew he could survive at least one night of looking cleaned up, even if the tie felt like more of a leash around his neck than clothing attire. Better than a noose, at least.

Alcohol was easy to spot - thank God for small favors - and both burly hands snatched duo glasses before turning towards his taller spouse and offering one as they made their way to one of the nearby tables.

“Food looks good, at least. Don’t see any decent fruit, though.”

In other words, where were the strawberries?

Akio Yoshida

From the moment they stepped foot out of the limousine that he’d rented, Akio knew it was going to be another magical evening.

It had been almost nine months since their first dance and the way the elegant ballroom had been decorated, he knew they were in for some nostalgic moments in the hours to come. His arm shifted, insistently looping itself through his date’s as they made their way through the ballroom’s entrance. Names were ticked off from the list as invitations were presented, candy bags were offered (and promptly pocketed - he could use the sugar rush later, he had a feeling) and dark brown eyes gazed upon the vast room that would serve as their Valentine’s date for the year.

“I’d offer to get you a glass, but I think I know better this time.”

Eyebrows waggled playfully as he glanced down at the beautiful princess attached to him. He was still riding his elated high over her agreeing to come in the first place - sure, it was a little more classy than what they normally did for dates - but in his opinion, it was absolutely perfect for his dragon princess.

Fingers moved down to entwine with hers as he grinned. “You hungry, beautiful? Or maybe you want to get some dancing in first, before the floor gets too crowded?”

Orah Gowan (with Laney Sutton)

It had been a long time since Orah had attended any parties. Halloween last year maybe? But things had been busy, drawing her into finishing school and finding new work. The young woman was tired more often than not, but the rewards of it all had been enough. Nursing was hard, how could it not be, but helping people... the role had settled comfortably on her, as though it had always meant to be like this.

Considering her past life, she supposed it wasn't so surprising.

Valentines had always been a particularly stand-out holiday in her family of florists, though for most of her life it was duty and sale that had drawn her out rather than any prospects for love. Other peoples' love had been the focus. This year though... this year was different, and special. The lady on her arm made occasions like this opportunities and cast them in new and exciting lights.

It had taken so many trips to thrift stores to find a pair of matching dresses in their sizes and some secret stitching to get them to fit, but sweeping into the ball room in rich magenta made it all worth it. Even more so, because her arm was looped through Laney's and her girlfriend's dress was cut so low she suspected it was fashion magic that kept it on her. It was enough to distract her more than once on the way here and she was starting to think by the way Laney smiled that... it might be a little on purpose.

"Lets get drinks and take a look at the dresses first. I just want a peak." She said as she leaned into the other woman, feeling rather daring as she brushed lips against her ear so her voice would carry over the music and hum of conversation. "Then we can do whatever you want."

Chase Black

It was easy to note how pleased Prissy was with the affair, but it wasn't difficult to note that Trey was wearier and less than enthusiastic about it than the couple. Noting such a thing took careful consideration, with Chase's gaze lingering on the man's face when eyes weren't turned his way. He didn't know Trey as well as the others, but he learning.

He recognized the weariness of grief as it threatened to consume a person. He'd watched it eat away at his mother for the longest time and sometimes...it ate at him in a way that threatened to overwhelming in a similar, but different way than the chaos that flared and demanded from him at his core.

His mouth opened, then clamped shut as he watched Trey flitter off in an almost paltry manner. Watching him leave, the man's jaw ticked and his fingers pressed more firmly into the fabric of his date's dress before they relaxed and he smoothed it back out.

There would be time later to get with Trey and speak with him. For now, he had other things to focus on because the younger man had been correct, there were guests to greet and they couldn't stand separated from the gathered forever.

"We'll have to do something to ease his problems when we can," he commented, as if it were a passing thought and not something brewing in his mind for days now. "Come, there's plenty of people to mingle with and I'm sure you're aching for praise for the party."

There was a certain lawyer up ahead that he spotted and was slowly guiding them towards.

Cassadega Bright

When she'd been presented with the request to accompany one of her boys to the fancy shindig being held in some rich lady's name, she'd said yes. Then, she'd spent a few days out shopping for an appropriate dress and deciding how she would do her hair.

In the end, when she discovered that Jericho was going to wear all black, she settled on a form fitting number that accentuated her assets while leaving enough up to mystery.

Her hair fell over one side, now long enough that the tips could touch her collarbone and she'd gone with dark lipstick and a smokier look for her makeup. Fingers pressed lightly against his bicep, the slight smile on her lips indicating that she enjoyed feeling his muscles, as he led her inside. "Mmm, you know I enjoy dancing Jer," Cass mused, taking in the decorations with an approving hum. "But, that can wait until later. We should probably check out the whole soiree first."

Noah Jones

Noah was the opposite of his burly husband in many ways-- from red hair to his slimmer but taller build -- and he was completely at home and comfortable in the button up and nice slacks, the jacket fitted and tailored for events such as these. Hell, he was the whole reason dear old Paulie had a nice suit because while it rarely happened, he liked going to fancy events from time to time.

This was their first in DC since they moved and it was happening because of the commercialized holiday that they 'didn't' celebrate. (By didn't, it meant that they pretended like they weren't going to do something but inevitably always did.)

"Wait until we pick a table to sit at, or go check it in at the coat check," Noah replied, stormy eyes glancing over the room and taking in all of the pink, red, and white decorations.

Eventually his gaze settled on his husband and gray eyes flicked from loafers up to the man's face appreciatively. "No, but there's some at home. Thanks, for putting on the penguin suit." He stepped in, smirk on his mouth, to wrap fingers around the tie and use it to tug Paul closer him.

Rory Willows

Her boyfriend was the type of guy who liked to be over-the-top, evidenced by the fact that he's sneakily rented a limousine for the event. Rory thought it was an unnecessary expense, but that hadn't stopped her from grinning like she was once again whisked away into a fairy tale by a charming prince. Secretly pleased, she hadn't even voiced her thoughts on the extravagant ride and allowed Akio to keep her as close as he wanted.

Her dress was simpler than the one from the gala hosted by the hospital, because she'd had to purchase it on her own, but it looked nice enough and featured white with an icier blue accents. Her hair was plaited into a careful but still somewhat detailed braid that fell across one shoulder. Curling took too much time and they were already splurging, so she didn't bother with a hair stylist when she could figure out something herself.

"We should eat, before they don't have anything I can eat," she decided, squeezing his hand.

Priscilla Stratford

Like Chase, Prissy didn’t fail to see the exhaustion settled in on the young man’s face. While Trey’s everyday going-ons did little to impact her world and everything that orbited around her busy schedule, she still could sympathize for the fashionista’s heir.

“Mmm.” Her quiet nod agreed with his comment as the strong hand guided her off towards the crowd. All around them, people were conversing with each other - some with friends, some with strangers. The attire ranged from frocks she’d seen in the windows of the reputable dress shops all the way down to clearly clearance dresses from the rack of some no-name JCPenny’s.

To each their own, she supposed.

Eyebrows lifted as she gazed in the direction he was leading her in. An unfortunate man in a suit - potentially cute in the looks department, if he didn’t look so terribly anxious.

“A friend?” She mused, glancing up to her boyfriend, then back to the crowds. Spotting Regan towards one of the walls, she nudged the older boy and pointed in the girl’s direction before calling out cheerfully, “Regan! Sweetheart, over here!”

Robert Banks

He was in the process of punching in a request for a Lyft when a familiar flash of pink caught his attention. Hazel eyes widened as a particularly smug looking young man made his way towards his table - or chair, rather, as he hadn’t bothered to sit down yet.

Crap.

The phone was deposited into his pants’ pocket as his signature smile worked its way onto his expression. “Mr. Black, thank you again for the invitation - you’ve really outdone yourself for the occasion.”

His hand outstretched itself to shake the approaching host’s before turning and offering a kiss on the back of the knuckles to the young woman accompanying him. He could only presume her to be the elusive girlfriend mentioned on occasion and Rob couldn’t help but smirk at the fact that they both shared similarities in hair color. Pink must be one of the man’s preferences, it seemed.

“I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure of meeting, Miss,” he offered cordially, pulling back to allow himself a hearty swallow of the remaining water in his glass.

With any luck, his host was simply making rounds and he could escape back to the shadows (and exit) soon enough.

Paul Jones

Eyes were still scanning the food options when he felt the tug come on his tie, guiding him closer to his date. Startled violet eyes moved to meet his as Paul's breath caught in his throat. It didn’t matter how long they’d been together - the younger man was still capable of making his heart thump wildly in his chest with something as simple as a mere glance and he knew it. His gaze adjusted to normal as he received the unspoken message, mirroring his partner’s smirk as he tilted his head to press lips against lips for a brief kiss.

It wasn’t Valentine’s Day without a kiss or two, right?

“I’m ready to go whenever you are,” he offered playfully before already shrugging off the dark jacket, folding it over his arm as he forced his focus away from the polished looking ginger and towards the first empty table he could locate. Paul knew he was stuck in this goddamn stuck-up affair for at least a good hour or two - might as well make himself comfortable for the duration.

“Eating first? Or did you want to mingle?”

Eyes lit up at his own suggestion, a sly thought coming to mind as he folded his jacket over the top of the closest chair. “Could always make some new friends if you want, y’know.”

Akio Yoshida

“Right, of course.” Her vegetarian diet made things slightly more strict when it came to dietary options, but it never deterred Akio from finding various new places to call theirs when it came to date nights. Thankfully, the buffet spread out ahead of them appeared to offer a decent enough variety that even the pickiest of eaters could find something to nibble on.

A dip down and he was pressing a kiss against her temple, the young man unable to help himself when it came to his beautiful date. All around them, couples and friends loitered - some had already started to dance while others picked at plates and talked amongst themselves. He thought he saw a few familiar faces but the only conversation he was willing to partake in were the ones that involved Aurora, less other people find him and strike up a chat.

“May I, madame?”

One hand motioned towards the buffet in an exaggerated flourish while the other guided her towards it. A quick dart forward and he was collecting plates from one of the empty tables, offering her one as he made his way back to her side. “I am allowed to steal from your plate, though, if you find something that looks better than what I get, right? I’m pretty sure that’s in the dating handbook somewhere.”

Erich Jäger
Erich was currently at the buffet table, loading up on whatever he could find. And usually eating it before taking something else, mostly because he wanted to hang around the table the entire night, and if he walked around with food, that meant that someone might actually think that they could keep him from eating! Not tonight! He thought as he loaded more chicken onto his plate. However, it was getting quite crowded at the table, and Erich didn't realize just how crowded it was, until he felt a bump in his side, and turned to see if someone was trying to push him out of the way, or if it was an accident.

However, it seemed that it was some female teenager, and she was already apologizing for it. An accident then. Erich thought, as he gave the teen a smile and waved his hand in front of him. "It's fine! It's getting a bit crowded in here anyway." He said, looking around at the table, and feeling like he wanted to glare at everyone there who would dare to take his precious food that he was possibly going to eat later!

He looked at her. Might as well try some conversation right? Might let him digest a bit which meant he would be able to fit more food into his stomach. "You here to participate or only for the food?" He asked jokingly.

Pat O'Ryan

Pat had seen the flyers for the charity ball all over the place and knew that it was the perfect event to take Fiona out to. Their date nights were varied and enjoyable but they didn't really do things like this. 'Balls' and the like. So it would be something new plus its just in time for Valentines day, their anniversary. Two years. It had been two years since they had been matched up for a blind date at the history museum. Pat had signed up after losing a bet but as far as he was concerned he didn't lose a damn thing. So he had gladly gotten them tickets and even got a new suit, his old one was too small in the shoulders now, and even borrowed a nice car since his truck wasn't exactly 'fancy' or dress friendly.

Boy was he glad he was in a new suit by the time he escorted Fiona into the ballroom. Everything was in pink and white, the decorations tasteful and elegant, the dancefloor wide but with tables set off to the side for conversation or relaxing. Their was even live music. Yikes.

The tall redhead felt a bit out of place in such a fancy local so he would do his damndest not to make a fool of himself that night. If his luck held that is.

Purple eyes took in everything, including the other guests, and the table that some were gathered around. A table that they were selling flowers at. With a quick kiss on the cheek the galant EMT let go of his date and murmured, "I'll be right back" before heading for the table.

Tzuyu managed to steady herself. She wasn't really paying attention. She was too busy looking at all the decorations and at all the dresses. She had accidentally bumped into someone. A male.

"I'm sorry."

He was holding a plate piled with food. She didn't blame him, she was about to do the same thing. She looked at him and made sure she didn't spill anything on him when she bumped into him. His suit still looked clean.

He was asking her something. She shooked her head and tried to remember what was asked. Something about food, participating. Wait what?

"I have to participate in something? I wasn't told that, I didnt know. I only came for the food."

If she had to stand in front of the room in front of everyone she wasn't going to do it. She was going to bounce at the last minute. First she was going to take a plate of food with her and then she was going to head home.

Fiona Watson

It was hard to believe that it had been two years since she'd agreed to sign up for blind dates and found herself with a wonderful boyfriend. Due their schedules, most of her remaining friends, who's number was smaller than she'd like, had yet to meet him. That was a strange concept in itself, because Pat was very much a large part of her life and so were the other people who stuck around to populate it.

So, when the charity ball had been proposed...Fiona had carefully nudged Zach to find his way into it too.

Fiona's hair was curled and pinned to fall over one side and her dress was cream with a pink skirt that trailed all the way to the floor. It wasn't overly fancy, but still nicer than anything else she wore on a regular basis and it matched the theme of the event.

Blue and green eyes lifted up to look at her boyfriend, handsome in his suit even if it wasn't the most comfortable for him. "I'll be here," she replied warmly, a happy smile on her face as she took in the other guests, hoping to find the familiar face of the boy who she grew up with or someone else she knew.

Kavinsky

How he had been roped into attending a fancy soiree as a guest instead of one of the waitstaff he didn't know, but there were a lot of things he'd found himself doing that he never expected. Like digging out one of Baba's old suits for the occassion. This one was less beat up and worn than the other, something gray that didn't quite reach his ankles in the pants or even his wrists where the white button up's sleeves peeked out from beneath the suit jacket.

There were holes and frays that were mostly unnoticeable, but it was pretty clear that he wasn't meant to be there.

Especially not when considering that he'd brought a small teenage girl with him. "Okay Mory," he said with a sterner look than his naturally mean face. "Best behavior," he paused, looking like he was warring with himself as his jaw shifted. "Please."
