It was strange to see those flickers of emotion flashing over Tryston's face. They were all so brief and subtle though, Constynce found she could barely read any of them. What was going through his mind that would cause so much shifting in that usually stoic face? One reaction was clear though, and it made her heart flutter in her chest. His skin felt nice under her fingers... Just one more day maybe? When they got there, he would be off again stopping whatever web was being woven around them. How long would it be until he returned? What if he didn't return...? Thankfully, strangely, the touch of his breath was enough to keep her from sinking back under. It was a mere breath, but it sent tendrils of shivers along her skin... Her brow knit at the question, pulled from a different branch of thoughts once again. Thoughts that were probably best left alone for now. She wanted to reassure both herself and Tryston. She wanted to tell him that she would be fine. That he wouldn't have to worry about her. She was a horrible liar though. Overthinking wasn't her style, so what was going on now? Uncertainty and that cool gaze made her bite her lip. "I want to be," she finally murmured. Eager for comfort against the sudden unknown, she closed the distance that Tryston was reluctant to. She pulled the furs with her as she pressed herself against the secure body next to her, head burrowing under Tryston's chin while keeping her hand in place at his cheek. "Will you be alright?" she asked in return. In an impulsive urge of what she could only believe to be selfishness, she made a point of exhaling slowly over Tryston's neck as well. Would he feel it as she had with his?

His gaze softened at her words. I want you to be alright as well. The words wanted to leave his lips but once more the stoic man seemed frozen at her touch. There was so much he wish he could do for her, so much desire to see her actually happy again. When they had first met, when he had opened that door to reveal her he had felt his heart stir -just the tiniest movement that even he hadn't noticed at first- but the more he had spent with her, the longer their journey took, the more he realized that she had become special to him. Losing her to another had been worse than any beating, he would rather be shoved under another avalanche than dare to see her whisked away again....it was a bit selfish but true. He simply didn't know how to express those feelings or knew what to do with them as they were so strange and so new to him.
As she pressed closely against him Tryston stiffened. He knew battles, he knew the codes and how honor was, but when dealing with women....well that was a whole new world. This one in particular seemed pretty talented at melting the ice around his heart and as she surprised him yet again by asking a question concerning him rather than worrying over herself the man found himself torn. The breath from her lips sent a shiver down his spine and that was the breaking point for Tryston. He broke free from her hand and twisted so that he could turn away from her, an attempt to hide the desire that had lit his gaze. If he kept facing her, if she kept touching him with that look then he was afraid that all the invisible chains holding him back would finally shatter.
And from that point on there would be no going back to those lines of friendship, to the roles of a guard and his charge. They would be diving into something else and while a part of Tryston burned desperately to do that another part of him was hesitant...what if this would only cause her more pain?

The sudden movement was a shock, and Constynce spent a moment lying in place and staring at Tryston's back. Had she done something wrong? ..The only thing she could think of was that his reaction to her breath was quite the opposite to her own from before. Normally, she was not one to give much mind to personal boundaries. Anyone shying away just got a giggle from her. So.. so why did this rejection hurt so much? In a flash, her mind returned to that day in the woods. It felt like ages ago. His kiss that had been sudden and impulsive and wonderful... Back then, she had felt ashamed. She was an engaged woman, after all. However, she had also felt... oh, she didn't know what the word was. She could clearly remember it though, the warmth she had felt at the time. None of Quintli's kisses had ever compared... Maybe the death had changed something? Tryston could not be unaffected by such a trauma, after all! What would her grandmother do? Well, certainly not lie so close to a man she was neither promised nor married to... She would have to act a bit more appropriately. Yes, she was selfish... She pulled the furs up over her head, telling herself that she would stop making Tryston so uncomfortable. That is, until she realized how uncomfortable she was. She didn't like feeling hurt! She was just leaving the fog of her mind, and this was what she got? It had been so nice a moment ago! Her arms shot out from under the furs, pulling herself against his back for an awkward hug. "Please don't be mad at me. I'll stop lying next to you if you don't like it." And no, she did not register at all the contradiction of her words verses her actions, promising to back off even as she pressed closer.

Tryston had to close his gaze tightly as he listened to the rustling of furs. He had hurt her, that much he knew, but the warrior didn't know what else to do. It wasn't as if he had taken her to Zena to take advantage of her, if anything Constynce needed time to heal and to reflect upon recent events. His mind continued to attempt to rationalize the situation while his body stirred in other directions. It was as if he were being torn in two - one half of him wanted to take the woman in his arms and never let go while another part tried to hold onto ideals of honor...what was honor anymore? The Brotherhood was corrupted, she had nearly been killed by the one who had vowed to keep her for life, he had been outcast, had even killed after being on the verge of death himself, and at this point Tryston wasn't even certain who he was. Why would he drag Constynce into that? She simply needed to get to the manor so that she could be safe while everything resolved and once this winter was over well....she would probably run back to Tale where everything was warm and full of life. In the midst of his troubling thoughts Constynce's voice beckoned to him. His icy gaze shot open and the warrior shifted, ever so slightly, as she spoke to him. Was he mad at her? No, it was far from that. His lips pressed into a tight line as he frowned and hesitation once more made him stare at the cavern wall for the longest moment. Gods give him the patience and restraint for his next actions....taking a deep breath Tryston plucked Constynce's hands from his body before he rolled over and instead wrapped his arms around her and pressed her tightly against his chest, "No need to freeze." He managed his voice soft and calm, "I'm far from mad at you, Constynce. Now just get some sleep and we'll see about heading out in the morning." While his voice managed to stay calm it was nothing compared to the emotions that flickered across his expression. Thankfully he rested his head on top of her own so that she couldn't see the mixture of sorrow and longing that shined there in those silver eyes.

Constynce held tight as the silence stretched, breath just as trapped in her chest. She could feel her eyes heating up at the thought that Tryston might just pull away again. A sob even got caught in her throat as she felt her hands get moved, her whole body stiff with tension. She needed the contact! She couldn't be alone! The sob released in a single syllable sound as Tryston turned toward her, eyes wide when she was pulled close. Once in his embrace, and once she heard those reassuring words, a strong shudder marked the release of the tension she held. Blinking away the heat, she peeked up at Tryston's jaw, unable to see what was above. Letting out a shaky sigh, she nodded and nuzzled close. Here she was in Zena, in a frozen cave, tucked into a pile of furs, uncertain of where the road would take her. For the moment though, she had to admit that she was more comfortable than she had been in months...
