"I wish I knew for sure. As far as I must go to discover what has happened to my sister, and to bring her home if possible." He swallowed against the lump in his throat at what he would do if she was gone, but managed to hold back a surge of panic. Fretting now would only drain his strength and change nothing. He had to keep reminding himself of that. "I hope that it will be quick but I'm afraid I have no idea where to start, I'd like to set ashore in Oba, beyond that, I will follow wherever the path takes me. I can only pray that the Gods guide me truly."

Rainier felt a shiver run up his spine at Father Zekiel's words, for the first time it truly hit him that he was leaving. He was a desperate fool.
But with the priest's words, practical plans for gathering the necessary supplies began to take form. He would need a nice big pack for carrying those things necessary to protect himself, he would stop at the market tomorrow to pick one up and begin to gather rations that would travel well.
"Thank you, I wouldn't have thought to bring such things, and I would be honored to accept your blessings." He gave a respectful bow of his head.

As they approached the temple, Rainier slowed, he hadn't considered the memories that would resurface upon the sight of the familiar church. Some were even happy, there was a time before his family had broken when he had attended services with both his parents. After his mother's death, the memories were mostly of cleansing ceremonies as his father tried to rid his house of the bad luck he had likely attracted with his own atrocious behaviors.

But the church under Father Zekiel was even more lovely than he remembered. A soft serenity seemed to radiate from the temple but Rainier found himself tensing as they reached the door and hovering just outside it.

"I've... never stayed in a temple before." He admitted a bit bashfully, running his fingers nervously through his hair as he gazed around. "I'm not... Quite better, yet." He admitted, "I've been... Not myself, since Raisa went missing. The last time I tried a cleansing, it didn't work. I'm worried I will attract trouble to you here."

He had always rejected the idea that a person themselves could be a source of bad luck, but he fully accepted the idea that bad luck could be catching, like some sort of virus. And if his bad luck was resistant to the normal rituals, perhaps his presence would bring harm to the kind priest before him.

There was no telling if or how anyone who had been taken by the shadow demons could be recovered. It could be either a reasonable or impossible journey, and even with all his studies, Zekiel could not promise Rainer even a sure chance, let alone a successful outcome. But perhaps that was not his task, either. Only to do the most he could, with what he knew.

“It is the same but not the same temple you may have visited before,” Zekiel said.

The land was the same that the gods had crafted many eons ago, long before either of them had been prayed for and made between their parents, that much was so. But much had occurred on this specific subset of space that even he was not privy to, and it didn’t seem reasonable to equate himself and whatever presence he had here with those who had come before. Rainer and his family had attended church, but never his church, and never in the particular set of circumstances they had before them now.

There was no reason for Rainer to hesitate, but it was Zekiel’s task to convince him as much.

“No harm will come to you or I here due to your presence,” he promised with full faith. “Any harm that does come for whatever reasons that may be are those I am prepared to bear with you.” His eyes lit, his lip curving up a fraction more in invitation. “There is only food and rest here, Rainer. I welcome your company, and trust the gods will bless it. Please relax…and be wary only of Babasa…”

His serpent, who frequented the halls of his temple at will in these days, was a lethargic and gentle character so far as he had ever seen, spending the vast majority of her time lounging in sunny patches of light and flicking her tongue at his ear when she desired attention or sustenance—usually the latter. Lavender as an early evening sky, she rarely saw fit to move about without sufficient inspiration, but Zekiel had had rare opportunity to witness her cross—but only ever when his company was at odds with him, and he didn’t feel the boy at his side had anything to fear in that regard.

“She is a friend, and a curious and affectionate sort.”

Rainier hovered a moment more, worried he might somehow contaminate such a beautiful place with his turmoiled spirit, but the compassion and sincerity in Father Zekiel's voice won out. He took a deep breath and willed the tension out of his body, he rolled his shoulders a few times, and stepped over the threshold, wincing a bit as if half expecting to be struck down for his audacity.

When nothing happened, he opened his eyes and felt his cheeks flush. He opened his mouth as if to explain but promptly clamped it shut again and shook his head at his own silliness. "Thank you," he said again, simply. For he could feel that the priest's words were true. He realized it was probably a bit presumptuous of him, to imply that his troubles were more than Zekiel could handle. He felt torn between wanting to admit his fault and the sudden feeling of reticence that reared its head. Rainier was not often alone with others. It was an odd sort of responsibility, to feel the need to fill so much empty space with words to try to bridge the gap between two almost-strangers.

He massaged his temples, despite his physical exhaustion he was feeling mentally buoyant, it was healing for his spirit to feel as though things were moving forward once more.
"Babasa?"

"Is that.... Another priest? Or Priestess?" He queried, glancing around curiously.
Wondering what sort of things a person would be prone to doing that would make Zekiel feel the need to issue a warning.

Even after assurances, Rainer evidently reserved lingering doubts for himself, hesitating a moment more at the threshold. When he made it, however, Zekiel smiled.

“Babasa is a keldari,” he said. “The gods put her in my company some years ago, before I had yet left the Sanctum. She made it within our walls seeking warmth during a winter. It has pleased her to remain with me since. You have nothing to fear from her,” he clarified, his tone still brisk and light as though describing a particularly interesting play or cloud formation rather than one of the jungle’s serpents—not that they were especially dangerous if left unbothered even in the wild, but he had known a number of friends to be uncomfortable just the same. “I thought you might prefer to learn of her from me before seeing her yourself the first time.”

Perhaps Rainer would be especially fond of them or unbothered, but Zekiel had had visitors before who found the rather large snake unpleasantly surprising when they had come upon her in the temple without prior warning.

The temple was quiet, currently inhabited only by the two of them most likely, given the day and hour, and there was a special variety of peace to such a state, when it felt like the gods’ energy could inhabit the still spaces of evening and rejuvenate them after a day in constant motion. But then, Zekiel himself was accustomed to company of all varieties, and it was a pleasure to have even one guest. Speaking to many was part of his service, which inevitably meant many firsts—every friend was a stranger once upon a time, after all—such that it never occurred to him to feel any special pressure or anxiousness to fill the space. Words would come when they did. Until then, he lead his guest up a small, enclosed and winding staircase to the second story, and the room there currently dedicated to serving as a spare bedroom, on the rare occasions now that there was need.

Though it wasn’t an especially large temple, the lower floor was dedicated predominantly to service—the main prayer hall and pews, the podium from which he delivered mass, and adjacent rooms for special rituals, private ceremony, and meeting rooms for confessional or console. On the second floor, it doubled as living and workspace, with its largest room being dedicated to an office-library, and the rest serving as kitchen space, his personal bedroom, washroom, and guest rooms.

“You may rest as soon as it please you,” he said, “but I will begin supper, and would welcome your company for that if you have appetite.”

Rainier's eyes widened at the mention of a Keldari in residence and his eyes compulsively swept the room, but he could see no sign of the serpent. He harbored no ill will towards Keldari but he had always kept them at a healthy distance, as was wise with any wild creature. He supposed he could manage as long as he didn't turn down his bedclothes and find Babasa expecting to cuddle up for the night. "Thank you for the warning, I quite likely would have made a fool of myself without it. If you say not to be concerned, I'll manage."

Rainier stepped compulsively closer to the priest, he certainly wasn't afraid to go to his room quite yet, but it would be nice to be accompanied by someone Babasa trusted when he first met her. Healthily cautious, thats all he was. Perfectly reasonable.

He smiled at Zekiel and motioned that he would follow. It had been some time since he'd actually prepared food rather than simply picking up a meal at a market stall. Raisa had always said that the best time for conversation was when you were completing a task together. Rainier wondered if those within the priesthood ever grew lonely, he thought it might be hard sometimes, to experience life so differently than those around you. Even if it wasn't, Zekiel was a good man. He was happy to have the opportunity to share a meal with him, even for just the night. He could sleep when he was dead, after all.

"I've never had dinner with a Priest before, I certainly cannot pass up the opportunity to do so now. I'll take dinner with you Father Zekiel. But I insist on lending a hand. Thank you again for all you've done for me. Not many can change the direction of a life with only words. I will do my utmost to pay your kindness forward, and someday help another as you have helped me."
