Oliver wasn't sure what to say. He didn't want to have to say out loud how plain and boring he was, how he was too much of a nerd to know how to be attractive, got scared so easily, and was perhaps one of the worst crybabies on the island.

He tried to continue the sparring at least, but his aim was distressingly poor.

"I-I d-don't know how to be that k-kind of person, who dates and stuff," he finally stammered.

"You don't have to know how to be. You just have to be yourself." She said it, with a serious voice, her eyes concerned about her friend's view on this. "Dating isn't about being someone else, it's about being yourself, and getting to know someone."

She swung again, sighing softly as she did so. "I mean... I found Rhys without properly dating him. We got to know each other just by hanging out, being friends and getting to know each other. As we did so, we realized we found out other attractive and as time went by... became closer to each other."

A brief flicker of despair crossed Oliver's face. Would a friend getting to know him even be beneficial for something other than just friendship? He couldn't imagine it, he would just be too unreliable for anything other than being a friend.

Besides, even friends were a precious enough commodity. Oliver counted himself lucky to have that much of an attachment to the people around him.

"I-it's... okay, really, i-if I'm just not cut out for that sort of thing," he said with a smile that couldn't hide all the self-depreciation. But he had committed to this mask, and had plenty of practice trying not to concern others. "I-I'm glad to hear about Rhys though, he's a pretty cool guy."

As if doubling down on the okay-ness of everything, Oliver no longer faltered with his axe swing.

Seren saw that flicker of despair, and if they had not been in the middle of combat, he would have found himself enveloped in a huge hug from Seren. She knew all too well the feeling of being unworthy of such things.

"You will find someone, Oliver." She took his hit, with determination, sliding a little but refusing to go over. "I have faith in you. Not every relationship is the same, and not everyone is looking for the same kind of person. Someone will see how awesome you are." She might be repeating herself, she wasn't sure. She just knew Oliver was awesome.

She pulled her sword up and back, then swung in as she continued. "I used to believe I wasn't worth love, and that no one would see me that way. I was proven wrong, and I bet you will, too." She sighed, and added "And I will always be your friend."

Oliver felt tears sting his eyes, and he had to swing quickly before his vision blurred too much. He felt it connect and quickly wiped at his eyes. Hopefully Seren wouldn't notice, this was precisely the reason he could never expect a date.

Weaknesses aside, he was incredibly thankful for the friends that had put up with him for this long. It was only through the intervention of said friends that he could feel like maybe he was okay just the way he was. Maybe.

Seren was not sure about what his expression meant, and found herself hoping the battle would be over soon. She wanted to hug her friend, he looked miserable, and that made her sad. She took his hit, thinking hard as she did so.

She swung, again, and perhaps her desire to complete this spar communicated itself through her swing, because it was another hard hit. She was silent, for the moment, not wanting to put more pressure on her already upset friend.

Oliver felt that strange crack of his FEAR shield giving way, and the giant axe disappeared.

"Ah, w-well done," he said with a smile. For a second he actually looked just fine, like the earlier matter was completely forgotten, and his mood had been lifted by the conclusion of the match. And then he had to rub at his cheek before a tear got too far.

When Oliver said he was okay, he always tried so hard to pretend it was so.

The moment the axe disappeared, Seren unsummoned Diwata, and darted RIGHT up to Oliver, and pulled him into a tight hug. She wasn't able to miss the way he rubbed his cheek, despite his attempt, and between that and the previous conversation, she just wanted her friend to know he was cared about.

She cared, too much, sometimes, and once a person had earned her friendship, they had a very good friend. She had not had much in the way of friends, before here, and she was protective of the ones she had now.

"Oliver, I want you to know I didn't mean to upset you. I'm sorry if I did. I just... want to see my friends happy, really, truly happy. And you ARE my friend."

Oliver shook his head quickly. "N-no I'm- I'm okay, really, this is just-" Something like a hiccup or little sob escaped him as he rubbed at his eyes. "See, this just h-happens..."

It shouldn't have been a big deal, he had been lonely before, and felt unlovable many times, but on top of all that Seren was trying to encourage him and say he was a wonderful person. Oliver couldn't figure out which part of him was more flawed, the part that got so easily overwhelmed by his emotions, or the one that responded to it with tears.

Seren heard the hiccuping, and the little sobs, and she just hugged him all the tighter. "Oliver, it's ok... It's OK to let your feelings out. You don't have to bottle them up, and pretend to be ok..." She murmured to her friend. She had done this with Lex, and Rhys too... And she would do it for Oliver. Her friends would always be offered her shoulder to cry on.

"Bottling it inside, pretending to be ok... It just makes it worse. I always did that, back home... and it was just like... piling up all the hurt inside me, until it felt like it was overwhelming. You don't have to do that, especially with me. If you want to let it out... I'm here, Oliver..."

Oliver tentatively hugged Seren back, his little sniffles fading as he slowly pulled himself back together. He wished he didn't have to cry, or get all tangled up between marvelling at the wonderful friends he had made, and shoving all that persistent loneliness into a corner where nobody would have to look at it.

"I-I wish... I could be someone better than this," he admitted in a small voice, afraid Seren might break the hug. "I'm stronger than I was... but... I'm still just me."

Seren wished she dared to press a friendly kiss to Oliver's cheek, but while a sisterly kiss to Dai or Lex might pass as acceptable, she had a feeling Rhys might not feel ok about it with Oliver... Even when it was entirely to comfort her friend. Instead, she just kept hugging him, letting him dictate when he wanted to pull free.

"Oliver, you don't have to be 'better,' because you're wonderful as you are." She meant it, and it showed in her voice. "And you have more strength then you realize. Keeping going, when it all feels like you're not good enough, like it's all more then you are able to take, is a kind of strength a lot of so called 'strong' people find they don't have." She gave a soft, sad sigh. "Sometimes, I think the strongest people in the world are the ones everyone, including themselves, see as weak. And as for just you... You are good enough, you're smart enough, and dammit, Oliver, we like you."

Oliver started to sniffle all over again. If anything, this time it was even harder to keep the tears back, Seren was just being so nice to him... Not even facing a lifetime of loneliness could make him cry like sincere praise.

"I- I like... y-you too," he replied quietly, in between hiccups. He finally pulled back and rubbed tears away again, but he managed a tentative smile all the same. "S-sorry... I-it just... This happens..."

Seren watched him as he pulled back, watched his face and his eyes, making sure he seemed to be ok. She had no plans to leave Oliver alone until she was certain of that, because he deserved better than that. She had, accidentally, triggered this, and she would, intentionally, stay until he was ok.

"Nothing to apologize for, Oliver. You're my friend. I'll be here to help you, if you need me, when you feel down. And it's ok, frankly. Everyone cries, at some point. Some people are just more in touch with their feelings then others. Better then bottling it all up." She reached over and gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Better to feel, and know you can feel, then bottle it away and pretend otherwise, while inside your hurts eat you alive."
