Deimos heals up from Ephias' leadership skills

HP: 16+ 7 = 20/20

Finally, the gerbils were taken care of. He secured his mace back to his belt, then laced his fingers over his head as he stretched side to side. It was also to cover his ears. The ******** alarm was still grating on his nerves. Feeling a little refreshed (he would insist from the stretching, not Degras) he looked around at the others. Nahori seemed worse for wear, but... everyone else seemed fine. She was perking up anyway.

So... questions... after all of this, why wasn't crazy hair guy the one leading them? Was he not military? Because for whatever reason, he sure did know how to get to Mahmud. As he listened on, he felt a little bit better, and nodded along to his words.

While he took in what Degras was doing, however, his attention slowly turned to his commander this mission. Nahori, right? Poor thing... Mahmud honestly felt sort of sorry for her. As someone who wasn't doing so well with these missions, he couldn't imagine being so and then being a leader as well.

As they stood around in the cacophony of the alarm and the creak of the old, metallic ship, Nahori contemplated what exactly she was doing here. It was something she continued to ask herself, but finding the answer was never as cut and dry and she wished it could be. With a small, inaudible sigh, she looked from Degras to Deimos. Unfortunately—Nahori was preparing herself again—he looked like he was about to say something.

Deimos tries to turn off that damn alarm

HP: 20/20

"I'm gonna figure out how to turn this ******** alarm off." He announced, not bothering to wait for instruction to do so. There had to be some kind of control panel somewhere... After a bit of aggressive stomping around the room with increasing frustration, he found the alarm panel and ripped it open, then slammed his hand down on the 'off' switch. Finally. Sweet relief... silence.

Now he felt much better.

Even after the alarm stopped, Ephias still heard the echo of the siren blaring in his thinkpan. He rubbed his temple with his hand, as though to squeeze the sound out. Eventually the noise receded to the back of his brain, as a dull throb. Great. A headache.

With little more than a nod to Deimos, Ephias trudged past and down the hall. He kept his flashlight off, preferring the darkness to cool his thinkpan. The gentle glow of starlight from the large window provided enough for him to see by. The floor was littered with skeletal remains and aged garbage. Up ahead, a door waited in the shadows.

"Wait!" he called out, jogging to catch up to Degras before he could touch the door. "Wait give me a second!"

Perhaps... he was gifted? With some sort of supernatural abilities? No not really, he just knew when things gave him the heebie jeebies. Panting, Mahmud reached out and touched the door for balance. Even touching the door set his abdomen aflutter though. Was this just... anxiety? "This door." Finally catching his breath, he looked up to Degras and nodded. "You should check this door too, I think."

Ephias knew better than to dispute the orangeblood a second time. “I'll take a look,” he said. He pushed his visor onto his forehead. Retrieving his flashlight, Ephias shone it over the door in a slow circle. Near the left side he spotted a dark thin line. He edged in closer for a better look.

“Got it,” he said after a moment. “Got it” as in “Found the problem”. Not “Got it” as in “Go right ahead”. Important distinction.

What would Sarcel say to a subordinate who acted the way Deimos did? There was a fight going on between the part of Nahori that remained always subservient to highbloods and the part that now followed Sarcel Cincil's orders, the part that was military, the part that was supposed to be in charge of this entire operation. There was no way she could face her Lieutenant if all she had to report was I let everyone else do whatever they pleased without question.

For now she said nothing, she only watched Degras as he checked out the door. When all seemed right, she did what she thought she should: go through first. She was in charge, after all.

That's when the poison splashed on her suit, eating through some of it like acid, burning her skin. "It's a trap!" she choked, spinning to try and stop them from coming through the door, too.

After all that, the door should have been all set, right? No traps, no nothing.
Yet Mahmud, being a good troll, followed after his commander... only to get sprayed with poison gas. Between coughs, he gave Degras a withering glare... and then coughed again. And maybe dry heaved a little bit.

Mahmud was awfully good at dry-heaving.

Deimos gets sprayed with acid THANKS EPHIAS

HP: 16/20

The door was supposed to be disarmed, right? Right? He should have hesitated more- waited to see what happened to Degras before going through or something (he'd gotten distracted when Nahori and Mahmud went through - it was awfully easy to get distracted on these ships with all the stuff lying around and weird space noises) and had walked right into the trap too.

"Gee this sure is a nice and disarmed door we got here." He couldn't help the comment, dripping with sarcasm as he coughed after the poisoned gas filled his lungs. He was going to the medic offices immediately after they got back. No questions. Degras got himself a nice scathing look from him to match Mahmud's, though... probably with more venom. He'd spent his wrigglerhood giving scathing looks, after all.

Ephias jolted when Nahori slid the door open and brushed past him. The thin line receded up through the top of the door. “W-wait!” Ephias called. Too late. He heard a soft pop on the other side, and a yellow mist formed in the air. It stung at his eyes and filled his lungs.

Throwing an arm over his mouth and nose, Ephias squinted his eyes and drew back, coughing. The rest of the team had caught it worse than him, following on the heels of Nahori. Really?

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.

The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!

You have encountered a ...
ENRAGED, SKELETAL, UNDEAD SHIP COOK!

Dice 1

1. ... Enraged... (-1 to all attacks)

2. ... Jawless... (+1 on accuracy rolls)

3. ... Putrid... (-1 on all accuracy rolls)

4. ... Decomposing ... (+1 on all attacks)

Dice 2

1. ... Skeletal... (-5 miniboss HP)

2. ... Bellicose... (players take 2x the amount of damage on their first turn)

3. ... Armoured... (only 2 players per turn may use a special artifact/ability/item)

4. ... Burning... (take an extra 1 dmg each time you deal max damage (highest roll possible for weapon or damage-dealing skill))

Dice 3

1. ...Undead Ship Cook!

2. ... Mutated Daywalker!

3. ... Zombie Gerbil Pack!

4. ... Daywalker on Fire!

MINIBOSS STARTING HP: 25/30

If you rolled a 1, take 4 dmg.

If you rolled a 2, take 4 dmg.

If you rolled a 3, take 3 dmg.

If you rolled a 4, take 3 dmg.

If you rolled a 5, take 2 dmg.

If you rolled a 6, take 2 dmg. Your attack this turn does double damage.

If all party members reach 0hp, look below:

You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,

you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.

Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first or second mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.

If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.

If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.

If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.

You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.

If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+3 (rolled separately) hp.

If you are a Novice in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+2 (rolled separately) hp.

If you are training your skill: Each team member restores 1d4+1 (rolled separately) hp.

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you have reached the control room! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. The screens show that the ship is functioning perfectly, and headquarters patches in the control of a remote helmsman. They wait until you have returned to your boarding pod and leave, before steering the ship away.*

2 - Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. As the screens boot up however, dozens of red warnings and errors flash across the screen. It seems like there has been critical damage to the ship in multiple places. Your team is instructed to leave the small black boxes containing deadly explosives in key positions on your return path to the exit.

3- The ship refuses to power on, even after you follow headquarters instructions to make sure they are plugged in, and hitting ctrl-alt-del. It looks like something core is not functioning. Your team is instructed to leave the small black boxes containing deadly explosives in key positions on your return path to the exit.

4- Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. The screens show that the ship is functioning perfectly, and headquarters patches in the control of a remote helmsman. They wait until you have returned to your boarding pod and leave, before steering the boarding vessel away.*

If any troll in the party has helmsman authority, they can steer the ship to given coordinates, then return to the boarding vessel with the rest of the team.

Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

As the Nahori, Deimos, and Mahmud gagged on the gas, through the mist and the shadows Ephias spotted movement. A second later he recognised the yellow eyes of a daywalker. It trudged towards Nahori, claws raised. A mouth opened up in its face like a fissure in an earthquake. The orangeblood was still prone. “C-crap!”

Ephias bolted. The flat of the shears knocked aside the undead's reaching arms at the same time that a set of teeth sank into his neck. Ephias kicked out, knocking the monster back. He grimaced, clutching at the open wound on his neck, where red blood dribbled out.

Where it was usually next to impossible to tell what any old undead had been in their past life, it was somehow even more impossible to miss how this one resembled a chef. It would've been funny if it wasn't attacking them. After catching a claw to the shoulder, Nahori retaliated, peeling a good layer of slimy skin off with her weapon. It resembled a modified vegetable peeler, an ironically good match for their current opponent.

HP: 16 - 4 = 12/20
Damage Dealt: 3

Augh, gross. Was this a cook? Sure looked like it. Deimos swung his mace to hit the creature as it lurched past Nahori and Degras. While he did manage to hit it, it certainly managed to hit him back. He slid across the ship's floors, skidding to a stop a few feet away. Ugh, that thing hit hard. "For a dead ******** it's sure lively!"
