If he could have clutched Babel to his chest, he would have, but Merric was focusing too hard on the fight at hand. He could only hear snatches of what Lysander and Melvin were saying, some of the words drowned out by the whistle of a weapon through the air or the thump of a sword against flesh, but what he could hear wasn't pleasant.
The pod rooms? Did he say something about the pod rooms?
At some point, Merric had pushed himself even further to the edge of the bench, and then, as Lysander bent double over Melvin's vicious next swing, he stood up completely, his heart hammering in his chest. He took half of an instinctive step forward, then stopped, eyes wide, not wanting to intervene, but there was a certain desperate look in his eyes nonetheless.
He couldn't interject. That wouldn't be right. But...
Merric swallowed hard, then took a small step back again, though he didn't sit down, his hands curling against his palms at his sides.

"It's not a threat. It's a reality. I've seen plenty of officers churned into the grinder that is the horsemen. You just don't like hearing it. "
Melvin moved in, letting Lysander's sword glance against his shield as he stopped, sword at his side.
"Are you done?" He asked, voice flat as he watched him.
He raised his sword and pointed it at him. "Say you're done."

Lysander gave Melvin a look of pure dislike, his posture tense and his shield teetering on the edge of failure.
"I'll never ever submit to you, you despicable perverted scumbag. You'll have to try way, way harder to even earn my respect."
And in the face of all common sense, he swiped again defiantly.

"So serious. It's just a spar."
He took the hit before brunging the tip of the blade right up to Lysander's chest and pressing just enough to see his shield crackle
"You don't even have the common sense to know when to call the battle over. You do know I'm fulky ranked. You were never going to win."

Lysander curled his lip at Melvin. "I won't give you the satisfaction is why."
"And it must annoy you knowing there's nothing you can do to me here with a witness and with the wards. I bet it bothers you more than you are letting on. You are nothing but an old creep."

Melvin blinked a few times. "Old?"
"Actually, you aren't that important to me so really, don't work yourself up to try and place some importance on yourself. You're just a new speck. I just needed the spar for your energy. Thanks by the way." He said with a smile, glancing down at the sword. Lysander didn't even put 2 and 2 together that he had used his gun and switched to a sword. If he knew anything about weapons, he would have known that wasn't common and that the runic weapon typical to mission clearances did not have a sword. Daggers yes, but not a sword.
He also wasn't a runic hunter.
"You asked for this." And he shoved with all his strength into the sword, plunging it as the shield shattered into pieces and the wards flashed up in an instant, blocking what would be a fatal blow.
"And you're dead." He whispered, smiling before he stepped back and slid the blade back into the rod.
"Merric, Lysander is going to need some help." He said, turning to look at him. "He doesn't seem to know when his shield gets depleted to gauge when to call a spar over. Seems he needs more practice with it. His weapon bond is sadly very week." His face only showed that of concern.

All of a sudden, it was over.
Merric had had a dizzying, terrifying sensation of the sword smashing into Lysander, of vicious words and spat out disgust - of anger and frustration and snapping retorts - and then it was done. Merric couldn't see the shield break, or feel it himself, for that matter, but it was so very obvious that it felt as though he could experience the shattering sensation.
He was dashing forward in a heartbeat, without even realizing he was moving, until he was where Lysander was, Merric sliding to his knees in the grass, stumbling a little. He turned to look at Melvin, eyes huge, his heartbeat too fast in his chest.
"Was - was that - really necessary?" he asked, not angrily, but in confusion, his emotions all over the place. "His shield was already close to breaking, wasn't it?"

"It was and it did break. He knew that."
"Spars are there to learn battle lessons and to strengthen your bond with your weapon to become stronger. A hunter needs to be aware of the sensation of when their shield is depleted and how it feels when it shatters and they are defenseless. There is no injury due to the wards here, so it's a lesson that is best learned here rather than in the Sahara or during a mission. I asked Lysander if he wanted to continue, and he said he did. It was his choice to call off the spar. Now he knows how his shield feels when it shatters. He should be mindful of that."
He also breathed out as if it had all be a very sad result in that Lysander failed to get it. "Hunters need spars like these to build up stronger bonds and stronger shields. This wasn't a matter of win or loose. No contest in that a full hunter with a stronger shield is going to win against a rookie hunter. My bond is stronger than yours, but it's good for practice." He said with a smile.
"His weapon will heal any battle fatigue."

Lysander went down hard as his shield shattered, not expecting the instant between shield and barriers to be so completely terrifying. He sunk to his knees, his weapon silent, desummoned back to a simple belt about his waist. He was beaten but not defeated, still glaring vehemently at the other man.
"You are an absolute scumbag." he snarled, feeling somehow violated that Melvin had just wanted his energy.
He fell forward onto his hands, feeling dizzy.
"What a high and mighty piece of s**t."
Melvin made his skin crawl.

Melvin had a point, even if Merric was still worried; he had known the risks of fighting a full hunter, and he had taken them anyway, but the fight had somehow seemed more than that. He hadn't missed the expression on Lysander's face, or the biting words - well, the ones he had been able to hear.
Maybe he was overthinking it.
Merric's gaze flickered over to Melvin again, at the relaxed smile on his face, then gave a small nod, lips pressing together, teeth worrying at his lower lip. He turned back to Lysander, stretching out a hand - almost touching, but not quite; this was in public. He wasn't allowed to do that in public.
His fingers dropped away.
"Are you all right?" Merric asked quietly. "Do you want me to call Roswell?"

"You're a very sore loser, Lysander. I didn't twist your arm to fight me. You wanted to and now you're upset."
He watched as Merric passed him and went to him, reachinf out only to pause. His attention went to his dropped hand and then to the pair of them. "Why do you need to call his assistant? I thought you two were friends. Can't you take him?"

Lysander hadn't been so angry in as long as he could remember. The last time he'd been as furious as he was he had to have been a child, told that he wasn't allowed to do what he wanted. He usually got his way and the fact he hadn't gotten it this time was enough to make him want to throw a tantrum he had no energy for.
The things he wanted to do to Melvin made him feel sick and he turned his face away, propping himself up and extending his own hand to Merric.
"Help me up." he said curtly before giving Melvin a disdainful look.
"Are you still here?" he said. "You've served your purpose. Go away."

Merric's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. He didn't know what Melvin had meant by that insinuation - whether it was a hint of something more, an indication that Merric should be able to handle things on his own, or just a simple statement - but either way, it made him feel oddly ashamed of himself.
He cleared his throat and turned back to Lysander, taking the offered hand and then sliding his other hand under Lysander's elbow to help lift him to his feet.
"There you go," he said softly, barely audible. "Sorry."

"Of course. Want to make sure you're okay enough to get home. Need to look over the rookies, you know?" He said, before glancing at Merric.
"Hunters have more strength than civilians. You could carry him if he falls." He said, before moving away so he could place the rod back into the black satchel with the other and rolling it up to close it. Babel now rose up and was floating in circles overhead.

Lysander gave Merric a dark eyed look. "No apologies." he said in a quiet voice, before looking back to Melvin irritably.
"Get lost." he snapped. "Go slither off back to whatever rock you and your weird thing crawled out from under."
