Sabra (via slack)

Kitya wobbled before finally finding her balance again as her mother directed her stance, "I believe so." She replied as her fingers slowly curved over the crossbow. Gosh this was bulky. Kitya glanced towards her mother as she braced herself against the weight. It was strange that she was holding onto a weapon that her mother had always been so skittish about leaving near her daughters but it made Kitya happy. And she felt older now too...now that her mother could let her hold a weapon like this it surely meant she was close to being an adult!

As she lifted it up and pointed it towards the trees Kitya grinned, "So now what?" How did one shoot this thing?

[9/10]

Once the weight was fully transferred, Taijana took a half step back, delegating herself to an instructors role instead of a hand's on position. "Now all you need to do is aim." Which was easier said than done, given the weight of the crossbow and adjusting for the fact her daughter had never even held one.

That much was evident when the little one pointed it straight up into the trees and Taijana squealed. She reached forward to touch the butt of the crossbow, guiding it back towards the ground. "If you fired it like that we wouldn't have known where the arrow was going and either one of us could have been shot. You have to be careful, baby."

After regaining herself, somewhat, Taijana stepped back once more.

"Look through the sight pin, but don't shoot. Wait until your nerves are calm enough; if you shoot when you're anxious you're more likely to miss." She'd learned that much the hard way. It made hunting harder, since the amount of kills she brought back was far less than her siblings, but at least they were accurate. "And don't wrap your thumb around the forearm....just breath, aim as best you can and whenever you're ready...shoot."

Sabra (via slack)

A flush decorated Kitya's cheeks as her mother caught her and began her instructions, "got it." She replied quietly though her heart was a flurry of butterflies caught up in her chest. Who knew shooting her mother's weapon could be so nerve wracking? So ever so slowly she followed her mother's instructions by raising the weapon to point it evenly before her towards the target. Squinting her eyes through the piece she glanced forward one last time before positioning herself again. A final deep breath and then a move of her fingers and she shot the arrow...something she didn't know the results of since after shooting she closed her eyes for fear of seeing where it had landed.

If her siblings knew anything about crossbows then she would have asked them for advice. However, Trilanna hunted with a spear, her brother was a traditional archer, and papa....papa would know but he was busy taking care of her mother. Taijana could see the tenseness surrounding Kitya, and as much as she wanted to ease that from her daughter's shoulders right now she didn't dare. She needed to concentrate, as hard as that must be with her mother's nervous energy practically bouncing behind her...

She had her fingers crossed the entire time, and when Kitya fired....Taijana just blind. "You did it, baby!" She squealed, dropping her bolts in an effort to attack her daughter from the back with a hug. Was it a clean shot? No. The tip of the arrow head was barely clinging onto what would have been the "man's" leg, but it counted! "I'm so proud of you! Your first shot and you hit!"

Kitya dropped the crossbow in surprise at her mother's reaction. She was yelling had she hurt someone? Had she somehow aimed too far up so that the bolt had come back towards them? What if it ricocheted back at them and had hurt her mother? The little girl's heart beat wildly in her chest before the words finally registered....she had done it?

"I did?!" Kitya's gaze popped open in surprise and as she spotted the bolt hanging there the youngling squealed herself and turned so that she could bounce up and down with her mother in a hug, "I did do it! I really did!" She nuzzled her head against her mother's stomach, "You're the best mama since you taught me how to do it!" Oh this was a great day! She couldn't wait to try and shoot more and then brag all about it to the rest of the family!
