"Same. Sort of wish I had been slightly good at it, even as a kid, but maybe it would have given me a leg up here." He slashed again with the sword.
"Plenty of people at school I would have loved to lay down in the dirt."
He noticed the charge and prepared himself for whatever heavy hit that was coming his way.

"I didn't go to school. I got my a** kicked exclusively as an adult." It was thoughtful, though, considering, while Ever watched Melvin's posture, his position. This time, when he stepped in to take advantage of an opening, it wasn't a driving blow or a powerful force. Melvin had braced himself, but instead he found Ever's weapon just glancing against him, a whisper that only touched his shield -- and then, slowly, began to drag on it. To steal it, slowly.
This charge was more like a whisper, a nibble, than a powerful blow.

THE BITE:
While it doesn't appear impressive at first, the Bite enables the user to steal Fear from their opponent when attacking. Hunters will discover that they are unable to charge their Weapon while this effect is active as their weapon is too busy converting the fear they stole into their own fear shields.

"Well you could kick their asses now if you were ever allowed to go back to see them."
He expected either a heal or an attack, and when Ever moved in to scrape his dagger against his shield, it felt surprisingly underwelming.
At first.
Disgusting. Doing that without a thought. Saliva squirmed and trashed in the depths of his mind, offended and possessive as her thoughts curled sround his as ge slowly slipped.
The sword in his grip became looser as he stepped back, dazed and feeling a rush of heat that made him light-headed and his skin feel cold. His mind swam as he tried to keep stable, eyes unfocused as he looked at Ever and went through the warm waves that wanted to pulk him under. He had felt something similar before - back when he offered himself as a sacrific and wound up near dead in the morgue. But this had a tang of something.
He took deep breathes but didn't move at Ever, the sword held out in front of him.

Zeke hadn't so much as moved since taking a seat on the edge of the field, but he sat up now, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees, hands loose between them.
That was a familiar move, the blade just barely dancing across the skin, and it left the man wondering, just what Melvin was feeling in the wake of it. If it had been anything like what Zeke had felt, he wasn't surprised by the dazed look that flickered across Melvin's face.

Melvin froze, but Ever was still in motion -- already halfway into another swing that struck against Melvin's arms before Ever could really acknowledge that something was happening, that the fight had come to a standstill. He struck. His weapon leeched some of Melvin's shield into his own, giving Ever another little burst of energy.
Then he figured out this had turned into a bit of an unfair fight.
He stumbled to a halt as well, watching Melvin hesitantly, his weapon still loosely raised in protection. "Too much? I did ask..."

The sword didn't move, but he remained planted, digging his heels into the ground as Ever moved in and scrapped his shield with his dagger again, and again, the same sensation came. Was this still a charge? What was going on? Most charges lasted one time only. Had he just - lost his mind? Did the hits really just feel that intense.
It took a lot out of him quick, and he felt his breathing turn a bit more labored as he stepped back a few more steps, still holding his sword out, but not experienced enough with the weapon to know how exactly to block with it. He was much too slow to react to Ever but even worse now.
He could still sense a degree of pain, the turn of the blade, but with it was a quick depletion, a heavy heat with a cold wave, and his brain felt itself fizzle out and turn over each time, making standing almost hard to keep up. For once in his life, he saw the appeal to the fainting couch Lawr insisted they buy for the house.
When Ever's voice filtered through the heavy haze, he looked up and swallowed, mouth dry. "No. I told you to go all out." He shook his head despite it doing little to remedy anything, and he tried to stand a bit firmer, a bit taller, and steadied the sword he had in his hands.
"I'm not going to swing at you if you just stand there." His tone was dry but his words were concerned, hand shifting around his weapon. After just a breath, he flicked his eyes up to where Zeke sat watching, his expression just faintly questioning.
Ever had never been on the receiving end of this attack. And, apparently, it was worse for some than others.
Annoyed by Ever's stalling, he moved forward and lazily slashed in a wild gesture at him, before glaring back. "Come on then!"
He awaited the next rush.

Zeke could only offer Ever the barest of shrugs in answer to the questioning look that was shot his way. It had felt damn good to Zeke, had been very distracting, but he didn't think he'd frozen up like that. Not for that one, anyways.

"Come on, Melvin." In response, Ever echoed the swing; loose and a little wild and just enough to glance off of Melvin's shield. It gave just a spark of energy back to his own, made Ever hiss out between his teeth.
"Head in the game."

The glance waa quick but otherwise unsatisfying. It didn't bring back the questioning sensation Melvin was trying to pick apart, and the color and warm slowly returned to his features as he moved into Ever and stabbed out with a purposeful thrust at his chest.
"How about you pay attention."

"That's more like it." It hurt; struck him hard enough to make Even suck in a sharp breath -- but then he stepped in to swing back in earnest, his weapon leeching one last time at Melvin's shield.
"It doesn't feel right swinging at you while you just stand there."

"It would be my fault for not attacking. That's on me. Use your advantage." He corrected, stepping back as he felt the weapon dig into him and release the same dizzying sensation from before, making him slash quickly as he could into thin air before stepping back.
His mind was swimming and there was a strange, euphoric high mingled somehow in the tingling pain. It - was not something he had expected in a spar with Ever today. Flushed, he prepared to swipe at Ever if he got close.

With Melvin apparently flustered and out of sorts, it was no difficult feat to dodge his half-hearted attacks -- and Ever returned in kind, smacking Melvin across the back of his legs with the flat of his blade. It was just enough to remind him that Ever was there, that this was serious, without really digging deep.
And the rush was gone from it, now, as Amory's power faded and his weapon sighed in the back of Ever's mind, disappointed.
The action was quick. A pivot as he turned and with both hands to steady the blade, turned it up into Ever's shield.
"Like this?" He tried to dig the blade in deeper into the shield.
"Those monsters aren't going to be as kind and honorable as you if they have the opportunity to hit." His breathing was labored as he spoke, the physical and emotional drain taxing on him.
