**Approval given - Converting Hare's Cuff-links to El-ahrairah Crown - allowing Melvin to be a rabbit for 1hr per day. 100pt already stated in Melvin's journal for use.

Melvin walked from the banquet hall to a throne room, and from there a room glimmered with moutains of riches waiting at the other end. Walking past the throne, he stepped into the room, pausing as he looked about at the various little glimmering trinkets. Pipes. Cufflinks. Little glimmering tokens of luxury here and there all accumpulated into piles.

But it was here that his eyes caught the sight of blue. Something pulling his attention to focus on one set point, a motion in the reflection of a guilded surface for a moment, before it was gone and leaving him to look in one set direction.

And it was there a little slender crown with a clasp was resting against the treasures. A small blue gem upon the center piece, and as he moved to pick it up, he saw it was not just a little crown, but wide enough to be a collar of gold. His fingers looped against the cool metal as he stared at it, holding it in both hands as he turned it to see the blue gem.

It reminded him of something.

Of something close but distant.

Something familiar but strange.

Rep gave the mad hatter and the march hare a slightly strained look as he sat down and drank his dream tea. A story. They wanted a bloody story. He hated stories, especially when they were about him.

Still, Melvin’s was interesting and he listened with evident curiosity, not butting in even once which was saying something for Rep really. He’d always wondered about where Melvin’s scar had come from, at least in the finer details.

For his own story he had no idea what would even be interesting to tell, certainly he’d had a lot of interesting things happen to him in his time at Deus, but for whatever reason many of those stories felt like they had belonged to other people, he felt very often like a side character in the narrative of the universe, the henchman who popped in to fight things without understanding the grander conflict. It was hard to think of any stories which were genuinely his.

He shrugged his shoulders.

“Well you didn’t say the stories couldn’t be sad.” He said.

“I guess I’ll tell you all a story about a guy. A guy who had a friend.”

“You know, this guy like. He doesn’t have a very interesting story, but it was important to him anyway. So. He had a friend, and it was a rare thing because this guy like, he was hard to like, he asked a lot of his friends and it usually ended up being too much in the end and they’d leave. But this friend didn’t. At least not at first. He stuck by the dude I’m talking about through thick and thin, and the guy loved him. They went out drinking together and s**t and one time they even killed a ******** bear together.”

“But this story, like a lot of stories ended up with a woman. And like a lot of stories both of them fought over this woman and like, the friend got insecure about s**t, comparing himself to the guy who slept with her first. The guy could never understand this because like, this guy hated himself so much. From he woke up in the morning till he went to bed at night he’d hate himself constantly. And you know, it only stopped even a little when he was with his friends.”

“Both the guy and his friend were strong and they worked to get stronger every day, but in the end when it came to it neither of them could save the girl. She died and there was nothing they could do about it, just like that. The guy tried to ignore it, to tell himself it didn’t matter while he fell apart inside, realising the only thing that had ever mattered to him - his strength - was worth nothing at all. The friend also tried to ignore it, ignore it so hard that he believed it. In the end, it tore them apart because their grief was just there, just this huge looming thing that went with them and they couldn’t talk about. They tried to ignore it but ended up ignoring each other.”

“And the guy got angry and like he always did he tried to blame other people, he blamed everyone else because he felt like he hated himself so much that if he hated himself any more and blamed himself any more it might be too much to bear. So he pushed his friend away and watched as he found someone else, knowing that the person he'd found would just help him pretend that everything was fine and that he'd get hurt. He let it happen without even trying to stop it."

He shrugged. "And that was why the guy had a friend and lost them."

Rep watched Melvin make his way through the corridor ahead of him and felt his gut twist up, tense and anxious in the face of what he might face there. He didn't ******** know what his reflection would show, but the many versions of the man in front of him made him fear it. There were too many Reps and too many of them were ******** shitty horrible people, people who'd think ill of him, people who thought he was the failure.

He stepped into the corridor and at first it was fine, his own reflection accompanied him. He looked straight ahead.

The first was the one closest to him, matched in scars, appearance and stature but with years apart. The Queen moved differently, with poise, confidence and grace. "You gave me a ******** second chance." he said, and didn't say anything terrible to him. "You keep ******** trying. You are a mess, but you keep on going and that's all anyone can ******** ask of you mate. You'll never be me, but I'll never be you. All the negative s**t I could say to you, you've already said to yourself."

He glanced at the reflection alongside him, giving him a tired and somewhat sad look. "I am trying really ******** hard." he said.

"Aye. You are. You've protected the Kingdom. Keep protecting it and we'll always be here, and we'll owe you a debt."

The next was a flash of something huge and terrible, something too large for the mirror to contain, pulsing red veins, so much red, so much twisting power and scale. It narrowed down, shrunk and changed until it matched him, another version of himself, unscarred and somehow more perfect, his hair more red and his eyes more blue.

"Blood." he said, smirking, and in an instant twisted back into the huge creature, all teeth, claws and eyes, splattering the mirror with blood till everything was full and dark. "...you will always remember what it was to be me." it said, and the fluid on the other side of the mirror drained away to nothing with a wet slurp.

Left behind was a young boy. Small and skinny with ratty looking red hair and a t-shirt that didn't fit much. He took a step back from the boy in disgust.

"The ******** are you doing here?" he said, curling his lip.

"I couldn't sleep." the child said. "I just want someone to sit with me. I'm lonely."

"No. That's ******** stupid. You need to be manly!" Rep said, picking up his pace. The boy had to jog to keep up, crying now, the tears running down his cheeks.

"I don't want to be manly." he sobbed. "I just want... I want someone to love me. I want someone to care. I want mum to love me."

He wanted to run, but running meant fear, running wasn't manly either, and the thing would probably keep up with him.

"You always run away." the kid said through his sobs. "Why do we always run away? Why can't we just stay. Why can't we love anyone? Why is everything always manly, what is the point? Please. Please stay with me." And stumbling the child fell and cried pathetically, unable to keep up, until its sobs were far away.

He reached the end of the corridor and strode out looking shaken, rubbing his arms as if he'd touched something disgusting that wouldn't come off. "That was horrible." he said.

"I was just ******** glad I got out before anything else could show up."

Rep ended up lost in the castle far too easily, standing out like a sore thumb. He was in Death but that had never once meant that he knew how stealth worked. After all why should anyone need to run away from something they could beat instead?

This time he didn't get caught but did however find himself stuck in a silly ******** room he couldn't get out of. It would do for the night and he grumpily tried to relax, all while wondering where the hell Melvin had gotten to.

He found another room and another mercifully safe place to hide before having to duck out again.

He'd find this ******** treasure room if it killed him.
