“Ew,” Zac answered, “I don’t hang out with nerds.”
He feigned like he was reconsidering and shrugged. “But I suppose you’re a rich kid, too. So I guess I could make an exception. As long as you don’t embarrass me in public. I’ve got a reputation to uphold.”
He didn’t, really; whatever reputation he had he managed just fine, even with a doting girlfriend like Cambria, or a skittish friend like Evan lingering around. This reputation was better than the last one he had, so he couldn’t even really complain. Things were different now, better, and he didn’t have so much to even complain about.
Getting to know Tobias wasn’t the worst thing that could come from this, and in the long run maybe it would even help Evan.
“Cambria’d like a double date, I figure. Evan, too. They’re saps like that, so whatever makes them happy’ll work for me. Evan, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Evan’s a b***h to take out to dinner. He criticizes everything and is never happy with what he orders, and he’d rather cook for everyone anyone. So you should just come over for dinner sometime this week and we’ll all sit down and eat together, and then we can go out and play, I don’t know, mini-golf or something. There’s one, and a bowling alley about ten minutes away. And an arcade, so you can go nerd out and save princesses or whatever uncool thing you’re into.”

Tobias gave a little grin and shrugged. “Works for me. I know he’s picky, but I was thinking the same thing, honestly. A nice dinner here then some mini golf. It sounds like a pretty good night.” Though, he would make it a competitive one if he could, hopefully he would be able to run Zac into the ground with his mini golfing game, and hopefully he would be able to impress Evan just a bit...or give him a few pointers.
...At least he wanted to end the night curled up in bed with Evan. He hoped that the boy would relent soon...it wasn’t that Tobias was tired of waiting...he just wasn’t very good at being patient. Not all the time, at least.
“Thanks for the talk, Zac. I guess you’re not so bad after all. I mean, I’m sure you could be if you wanted, but I’m happy for the chance.” This would make Evan like him more, so it was worth the embarrassment.

Zac couldn’t help but laugh as he reclined into the couch again. “You have no idea.”
Zac had been annoying, but hardly a menace to Tobias; he might not have liked Evan dating anyone, but he hadn’t worked very hard to chase the guy away. Most days he hoped Evan would tell him that Tobias was annoying and that he wanted him out of his life so that he could go give him some hell and chase him off, but he hadn’t had opportunity or reason, and at the rate things seemed to be going now it didn’t seem like he was going to get the chance.
Which wasn’t so bad; they’d crossed this awkward hurdle and might have been able to head towards some sort of friendship as long as Tobias didn’t screw things up with Evan.
His phone buzzed and he lazily reached for it; he flipped open his text messages, replied something, and then glanced up at Tobias. “They’ll be home in three minutes. You can go grab a soda or something and wait in Evan’s room if you want. Don’t jump out and scare him, though. I’m not sure what’s gotten into him but he seems to have remembered that he’s got fists and he can swing them, so don’t let him clip you. He’s jumpy enough that anything could set him off. I’m blaming the spiders but I figured you could use a head’s up at least.”
