As they walked, the trees got darker and more sinister, and Rodney took Lawrence's arm, staying close to him.

"I don't like it," he whispered.

"I don't like it here either," Seven volunteered, walking on their own with their hands shoved into ther pockets. "The rocks don't feel right."

Out of the corner of Rodney's eye, there was a flitting, smiling presence, stripes and terror, and even though he jumped and held more tightly to Lawrence, he felt its hot breath at his ear, the fangs a bare threat away.

It felt like his dad's voice.

Even though he knew it wasn't, that it couldn't be.

"Who's that, f*****t? You think he likes you? You think that boy likes you?" It whispered. "He hates you, too. He'll get tired of your sniveling and crying, just like before. It's you that drives everyone away. They all hate you. You make me angry. You make me worse. If you weren't around, we'd all be happy. You keep trying to erase yourself, your smell, your voice, your touch, but we both know it's not enough. You're still here, with your ugly face and f*****t hobbies. Everyone would be better off with you dead."

The tirade didn't stop, and before he knew it he was crying (he knew he was ugly when he cried), and everything felt dizzy and dark. It made sense, because it had always made sense. He sobbed, but he couldn't say it wasn't true, because of course it was.

He shivered, letting go of Lawrence, and pacing back and forth, his heart in his throat. He paced back and forth, pulling at his hair.

"I need to go. I'm sorry, I'm sorry."

He strayed dangerously from the path, not even sure where he was going.

"I'm just going to end it. I need to go somewhere high."

Lawrence gently stroked Rodney in what he hoped was a reassuring sort of way, Butch heading over to walk alongside Seven and sniff her, looking like he was considering her for a decent sort of marking spot.

Lawr didn't find the forest all that sinister and in fact was enjoying their walk, that is until Rodney began to act very very strangely indeed, so much that even someone as oblivious as Lawrence could pick up on it.

"Hey. Wait!" he said as Rodney veered off the path, suddenly panicked and he moved to chase him.

And even as he did the world seemed to fade, no longer on the same path or even in the same place as he had been before, the dream seeming to contort and twist. Rodney was gone and he needed more than anything to find him.

He ran along the shore, looking for any sign, any footprints, anything which might indicate the other man came this way. There was nothing.

Nothing.

And he shouldn't have been running at all.

There was a bizzare, utterly bizzare turn of events, a few moments where he felt acutely that he was an oyster, felt acutely that he was captive and ended in a horrific scenario where he was eaten alive by giants.

It threw him quite a bit, but when he jarred back to reality feeling nauseous and disorientated he was back with Rodney, back behind him.

He stumbled once as he tried to get his head back together after the bizzare thing which had just happened to him but he kept his hand outstretched towards the other man.

"Rodney." he said, more weakly than before.

Rodney, Rodney, Rodney, the voice mocked.

"I just ruin everything," Rodney said, "I'm going to get you killed, or Mikael, or Malkam, I can't do it, I c-can't hold you back anymore-"

But for some reason, as Lawrence's fog lifted, so did his gradually, like a dark oppressive presence releasing the claws from his mind, and he collapsed in Lawrence's arms, still crying but able to think, again, and ask,

"No, that's...W-what am I doing? I heard him, Lawrence, I heard my dad..."

Seven's eyes narrowed at Butch. They seemed skeptical, but not hugely concerned with Rodney's pinwheeling adventure through the undergrowth, as long as he wasn't hurting himself. "If you're thinking what I think you're thinking,
don't."
PostPosted: Mon Nov 13, 2017 8:56 am

Lawrence wrapped his arms around Rodney and held onto him tightly, he expression flat and distant (because he had no idea what expression was appropriate for this sentiment or situation)

"You said some horribly concerning things." he said. "I will not have you leave." He tried to forget the vivid memory of teeth clamping down on him, the vivid agony and horror like static electricity lingering on his mind. "And your father is not here. He will never be here ever again."

Butch gave Lawrence a fleeting look and a whine, but everything seemed to calm down on its own without his intervention and he relaxed, once again wagging his stump and looking at Seven. "Ye look like a good spot." he said keenly.

gaia_crown [ Day 3 – The Red Queen’s Castle ]
Routes are player choice - Anyone wanting to reach the final throne room must pass at least one of these prompts

Route 1 - Painting the roses red
You come across a group of people sized playing cards frantically trying to paint white roses red. They enlist you to help.

Roll 1d20, if you roll above 7 then you are successful in helping them and they approvingly let you pass into the castle out of gratitude, if you roll below this then you must choose one of the below two tasks to complete to proceed.

Route 2 - The castle maze -
Another way into the castle is via the castle’s enormous hedge maze, this way is perilous and difficult but can have hidden rewards. You need to roll twice successfully to pass.

Roll 1d6
1 - Success - You mentally map out the maze as you go, successfully remembering the path you need to take.
2 - Success - Ahead of you the strange cat appears and points you down the right path.
3 - Success - Runic household item - Small runiced appliance
4 - Fail - You encounter nothing but dead ends and lose your sense of direction.
5 - Fail - A dangerous pit opens up at your feet, so close you almost fall in, realising your way is now blocked.
6 - Success - You hear arguing around a corner which leads you in the right direction.

gaia_angelright If you fail you find yourself back at the beginning of the maze, either start over the maze or choose one of the other two prompts you haven’t done to proceed.

Rodney knew where they were at this point, but out of all the scenarios in this book, this was one he could at least appreciate.

There was something relaxing about the sound of a wet brush moving against something soft. He knew the cards were worried (and he of course knew how the story ended) but even so...he moved to help, offering a hand.

"It's alright," he said softly, "I don't mind. Here?" He took up a brush, finding it...after everything else, soothing.

He consoled himself with the fact that they weren't real flowers, that he would surely be killing. It was just a medium, and an imaginary one at that.

It also felt good after...everything. After the despair, after his father's voice, to just be doing some simple and straight foward work.

Lawrence's opinions on unpaid labour were nothing like Rodney's attitude and when handed a paintbrush and asked to paint some roses, his first response was not the other man's excellent work ethic but instead to question why he was doing it at all.

He wasn't about to help random creatures for free.

"I'll go keep an eye out." he said, heading in the direction of a hedge nearby to check around it.

Somehow, he ended up inside a hedge maze. It wasn't really what he'd intended.

But all in all mazes were fine. They were all about memorising the path to take and carefully making sure you didn't double back on yourself. There had been a lot worse he'd had to deal with in the past and this was simple. The only distraction was the hope that Rodney didn't get himself into too much trouble while he traversed the maze back to find him.

BUt he was just painting, how much trouble could he get in?

Eventually Lawrence re-emerged.

"There's a door around here." he said with a helpful smile.

gaia_crown [ Final Day - The Queen’s Throne Room. ]
gaia_angelright If you fail at any point here you must wait another day before you can roll again (unless specifically stated otherwise)

The red queen’s throne room is enormous and is linked to a vast network of guarded rooms and corridors, at the end of these rooms is the treasure room where the valuable and often stolen treasures are stowed away by the selfish queen.

gaia_angelright Success means you can move onto rolling an artifact, Safe means if you fill in an rp post you can roll again, a free re-roll can simply be immediately re-rolled if you wish. Fail means you must wait 24 hours to roll again.

1d10
Quote:
1 - You are almost caught by the guards on the way to the treasure room, however they get sidetracked by a voice from down the hallway. It sounds familiar somehow. - Re-roll without cooldown
2 - You all successfully make it to the treasure room through a combination of stealth and sheer dumb luck - Success
3 - You find a place to hide until nightfall in a quiet and rarely visited room on the upper floors - Safe
4 - Success
5 - You find a banquet hall where you have some food to eat, no one else is here and it's a safe place to hide for the day - Safe
6 - You stumble upon an attic filled with strange toys, magical objects and concerningly, guillotines. You opt to hide there for the night - Safe
7 - OFF WITH THEIR HEADS, the group find themselves caught by the red queen and only narrowly escape with their heads intact, they need to wait before they can even think of trying again -Fail
8 - Success
9 - You find yourself cornered by a group of playing card guards, they turn you in and you are sent away from the castle. Unless you successfully helped them paint the roses red, in which case, they turn a blind eye- Fail or (if you did the roses red quest) a free no-cooldown reroll.
10 - You get lost on the way to the treasure room and need to come back the next day with a better idea about where the hell you are going - Fail

Rodney found himself wandering endless, winding hallways with no idea of where he was going.

Still, there wasn't a giant bird chasing him, so there was that.

He stuck close to Lawrence, leaning on him and talking quietly. He was safe in the knowledge that he wasn't here-here, and when he woke up again he'd be beside Lawrence in their bed.

Lawrence got seperated from Rodney entirely by accident, taking a turning and letting go of his hand for just a moment. He didn't at all expect him to be gone when he looked around again and immediately he found himself concerned he wouldn't find him again.

When he almost instinctually stumbled upon the treasure room, he gave it an unimpressed look.

It wasn't what he was looking for, he was looking for Rodney instead.

But he might as well pick something up quick while he was here.

The item Lawrence picked up before doubling back on himself to find Rodney was a simple looking ring which was all teeth. It was the sort of thing he'd wear, and so it was swiftly pocketed.

This time, Rodney woke up back in the halls, and could hear the voices of guards. He felt his breath quicken, wishing he knew where Lawrence was...and then the voices faded away.

For a moment, he thought he'd heard Lawrence with them.

Finally, Rodney found a place to settle for the night. It felt like ages of roaming the hallway and being hunted.

How many nights would be like this?

He knew what he was looking for, at least.

There was an item.

An item like his scarf.
