Lawrence narrowed his eyes at Nash and gave him a look of disgust. “You’ve seen quite enough of my divinity.” He said coldly. “So I’m afraid my clothes are staying entirely where they are. Even if it wasn’t cold or disgusting that would be the case. You burned that bridge when you called me unattractive.” The “old” comment also stung the way it always did, taken directly as an insult (because clearly the gift shop mattered less than he did) rankling Lawrence’s pride. This heightened his self-consciousness more than usual which had the knock-on effect of also heightening his irritability. He took an angry sip of coffee, feeling a little nauseous at the thought of the calories involved, Melvin probably took sugar. Drinking it was a sort of self-flagellation and it twistedly made him feel better.
“I should have noted you as someone who wouldn’t appreciate animals.” It was a trait which Lawrence considered emblematic of someone who lacked imagination or a desire to to reach back to primal more visceral instincts. Nash – as far as he was concerned – was someone who stood for nothing more than intellectual tedium and his indifference towards nature just made this fact even clearer. Of course, this was as usual through Lawrence’s logic where he classed his own proclivity towards harming animals as just another degree of appreciation.
When Melvin started talking about water and the ocean, Lawrence found his own tension levels rising, thinking against his will about how horrible it would be to fall into a disused and murky aquarium and never surface. He wasn’t sure why everyone had to always talk about the damnable ocean as if it was something nice and not just a colossal murder puddle with no remorse for anyone or anything. He hated it and tolerated talk about it only because it was inexplicably important to Melvin.
He also found his nerves even more frayed by the fact they were still talking about Nash’s life. His inherent narcissism was not at all at peace with someone else being deemed more interesting than him.
He put down the coffee mug and sulkily stalked over to the cash register, which -when it wouldn’t open with button pressing - he violently and impassively tore open with his left claw, summoned in a flash of further irritation and blazing white runic light.
It was empty, apart from a few cents and a dollar, all of which he stowed neatly in his wallet.
The production of a strange floating fish by Melvin when he finally noticed it threw him off and he stopped in his tracks, stepping back a pace from the other man and back behind the counter
“Erm. What on earth is that?” he said, clearly not about to let it slide, even despite Melvin’s nonchalance towards it.
“Is it dangerous?” he snapped, glaring at the fish.

"The rain in Maine falls mainly in Maine," Nash muttered, mostly to himself, because he was trying very hard not to be irritated and was very much failing at this. He added, at voice in normal level, "I liked canoeing, but I didn't care at all for fishing or whatever. I like the outdoors, but not that camping s**t."
He had spent too much time with his parents and siblings and various other people at those damn communes and excursions and forays into the woods. Their stupid retreats or whatever. He really couldn't have cared less about repeating them.
But at least it was nice here.
Melvin's fish received first a double take, then a squinted, narrow eyed look as Nash tried to figure out what the ******** it actually was.
"Is that...a fish?"
It really shouldn't have surprised him. Nash went down another aisle, plucking up a chipped mug that proclaimed Bell Isle Zoo! Come again! on one side of it, turning it around curiously before plunking it back down on the shelf he had gotten it from.
"October'll probably go again, when he can. He's too much in love with animals not to, the weirdo."
Lawrence received a withering look. "I've seen enough of your lack of whatever so-called 'divinity' you're referring to. And no, I wouldn't touch you with a ten foot pole, old man. As for my lack of appreciation or whatever for animals, I never said I didn't like them."
Just that aquariums were better. Which they were.
Both of them were acting strange. Melvin seemed more uneasy than usual, and Lawrence seemed entirely on edge, which was not helping Nash's nerves. He gave them both looks of deepest annoyance and moved on to the next row.

He pointed up. "This is Babel. He's watching over me while I work with Atlantis up here. He won't hurt you. Just don't...touch him."
"Come." He called, cupping his hands so Babel could rest in them and held them up for the two to see, one thumb rubbing Babel's side. "See. He's fine. I guess he doesn't like pockets." Since he had seen Babel so often, he only associated the fish to Atlantis and the mystery of their technology.
He looked around and could feel the tightness in his stomach get worse. "Do you....think this place is stable?" He looked around nervously again. "I think I might step outside for some fresh air."

Lawrence didn't want Nash's comments to bother him but they did anyway. There was honestly nothing that bothered him more than people who didn't want to sleep with him and who by extension didn't find him attractive. It got his back up and the other man didn't even need to try.
Still, the fish held his attention for the time being.
"Babel? As in the tower of babel?" And it got an accusatory look.
"Under den logiken kan du förstå vad jag säger." he said pointing at the thing. "Babel var ett torn av språk. Om inte, som jag förväntar mig är det lögner och Atlantis observerar bara." I don't trust that fish, I think it is spying on us and might be able to understand me. It makes me more nervous.
"I don't think we are going to find anything else in here." he said irritably. "No animals. We should look elsewhere."

Nash gave the fish another long, scrutinizing look, as though he half expected it to just flop out of the air and die on the ground. Except it was still floating, looking perfectly pleasant and golden, bobbing around Melvin's head before he was plucked from the air again.
"So...it's like...a pet?" he asked, as he climbed over a knocked over shelf and made his way over to the doorway. Melvin was still acting like a Nervous Nelly, and Lawrence was - well, Lawrence, and the gift shop was starting to feel a little too crowded.
"Nothing in here, andele andele."
Nash shoved his shoulder into the gift shop door to push it open and stepped back out, a gust of cold air twining around them, carrying with it the faint scent of smoke. He didn't wait for the others, instead meandering a few more paces back towards the front gate several yards away.
There were a bunch of glossy pamphlets on the ground. Nash squatted, reached out, and plucked one up, dangling it from his fingertips.
"Look, kindling," he said sardonically.Quote: 1 - In your wanderings, you come across a pile of what seem to be zoo maps that are by the front gates. The maps are in relatively good condition for a zoo that closed over a decade ago...

He frowned at Lawr, bristling at the words that he no doubt thought only Babel and thus Atlantis could hear. "Don't be mean to Babel." He said as if only reacting to Lawr pointing at it.
"Don't worry." He said to the fish, lifting his hands up to let it float up and above his head again. "He is Sophie's assistant. While I'm working, he makes sure I am okay and watch over my work. It's nice of her to entrust Babel to me. Ibwant to repay that trust in making sure Babel comes back unharmed."
Glad to be getting out, he moved to the door and helped Lawr out before following them.
Taking a deep breath, he walked over to see Nash holding up a map. Looking down, he picked a few up and turned the map over. He held one flat for Lawr to see as he couldn't hold much with one hand holding his coffee.
"At least we can get an idea of where everything is now. Kindling is a good idea. How are these still new?" They weren't worn or sun bleached at all and he saw no overturned contaniers that would have recently dumped them fresh to the world.
Beside them in front of what looked like the bathrooms was a cart with a worn out imagine of a penguin and the words ICE COLD fading away. Did the pamplets come from there as some terrible way to store them? Moving over, he frowned at the cart. "It's like this place was evacuated instead of knowing they were closing."
As he nudged it with his shoe, the sliding top nudged open and he noticed the unusual shine of clean metal inside. Leaning over, he slid it open to see a impecably and impossibly clean inside with zoo-themed animal ice cream and dippin dots untouched, unmelted, and unharmed.
"There is no way this could have lasted."
Quote: 6 - A dilapidated old ice cream cart stands outside of one of the run down resting areas. When you open it up, you discover the inside is not only perfectly clean, but there's actual ice cream in there. The question is whether you should eat it or not...

Lawrence didn't comment about his opinion on pets and how stupid it was to need them on the island, nor how crazy he thought it was to outright trust Atlantis. He'd tried trusting a powerful entity once and it had cost him years of his life, some scars and his fertility. He wasn't really in the mood for more blind trust in exchange for power, it was woefully overrated.
Peering at the pamphlet Melvin held up he raised a brow. "A little anachronistic no? They certainly seem out of step with the rest of this place." He shot Nash a look and smirked, throwing in a tiny smidgeon of Taym imitating as he did so. "Anachronistic means it seems like it's from another period of time."
Melvin found something more interesting though, the cart outwardly seeming worn but inside still full of wares.
"I would agree that they evacuated, except everything is so very overgrown." Lawrence said, gesturing at the plants which were encroaching on so much of the park.
He shrugged his shoulders. "If we are up against an entity which meddles with time here, I am outright calling my dibs right now on being twenty years younger."

"Dunno," said Nash, ignoring Lawrence's little pep talk to the fish, or whatever he was doing. He turned a pamphlet over in his hand, fingers running along the glossy, clean covers. "Looks like they were just printed yesterday, that's bizarre."
Melvin had moved to go look in one of the old ice cream carts, peering inside. Lawrence, on the other hand received another withering look, the very unnecessary addition of the definition rankling Nash's nerves. He felt a flush start to rise, turning away before he rose to the taunt, stalking instead over to where Melvin was looking. He was very, very much aware of his own rank in comparison to theirs - as well as the difference in their intelligences, the jab pinpointing exactly where he didn't want it to.
"Oh, snacks, nothing can go wrong with decade old ice cream," said Nash sardonically. He glanced up at the sky, which was slowly darkening, gray clouds twisting together as the muted sun slid lower and lower down. It would soon be too dark to do much more.
"Let's go make camp," said Nash. "Before it gets too dark and Princess Peach over here throws a fit about his beauty sleep. There's a climbing thing over there, higher up'll give us a better vantage point to see if anything is coming to eat us."Quote: 4 - All of you take a trip to the top of the climbing structure that was once a kids area. It is mostly a ropes course, with a large net beneath to catch any who fall, but the place you decide to wait is a square platform meant for any waiting groups at the top of a flight of wooden stairs. The ropes course leads across to another platform and another flight of stairs. There's not much space here; it seems time to get cozy with one another, but at least you're up high, with a better vantage point.

"If we have a time-altering entitity, I'd rather see it talked to or killed. Whatever can give gifts of years usually wants a payment. No one does anything for free. It might turn us into a water buffalo." He looked over at Lawr, not wanting him to get tempted by any offer for anything. "Why just 20? You could ask to stay a set age all your life if it can alter time." Not that Melvin was against Lawr staying the age he was as he knew Lawr as none other than how he looked now, save a few years from the horsemen punishment. Still, a little more his age wasn't exactly a BAD thing - not that he'd get to enjoy it now.
He looked up and then checked his watch. "I forget the time change." He said, looking up at where Nash was pointing. "Good idea to be high up than on the ground if there are some wild animals. Something could pounce us in all this overgrowth."
Moving that way, he looked at the map. "This place sure had a nice assortment of animals. Even had a avian section too and a reptile land." He said, looking it over in the way a tourist might before folding it and looking up at the steps that lead to different rope bridges and a platform. It was a good thing they weren't taking any of the rope course or Lawr might need help, though he was flexible and stealthy enough that he might not.
Once atop the steps on the platform, he realized something. "There isn't enough space for a fire here....just us and our bags." If that.

Lawrence was not at all looking forward to camp. The main thing that was keeping him warm right now was his own sense of indignation and the fact they were moving around. He knew the moment they stop he'd feel it the way he always did. It was almost impossible to keep warm without much body fat and with a weapon who naturally radiated a corpse-like chill. He felt tired already.
"Overnight missions." he said grimly. Every bit of it bothered him, sleeping around other people wasn't something he did comfortably, aware that half the universe would prefer he was dead. Also sleep meant messy hair, sleep meant the memory of back pain, sleep meant no shower or moisturiser. Roughing it was something he took no joy from.
"Killing a gift horse." he said grimly. "And water buffalo would be fine so long as it was a much younger one."
Summoning both claws, Lawrence scaled the outside of the stairs like a cat and pulled himself up onto it. If anything was around they'd see it, no question up here. It was just small and cramped. "Never thought I would miss the island." he said with a sigh, wrapping his arms around himself as he desummoned his claws. He was sure he could see his breath on the air.
As soon as Nash climbed up he set himself up between both him and Melvin, though it didn't help all that much with the cold. "Did anyone bring a blanket?" he asked with a shiver.

Nash was doing what he did best at present - namely tuning out any of the conversation that had to do with anything about Lawrence. He was still smarting from the condescending tone of voice, his face still a little flushed, Nash climbing the stairs with angry footsteps, though he said nothing.
Maybe they'd be lucky, and some of the snakes from the reptile section would come in the night and strangle Lawrence. Nash was not looking forward to the night, brisk air turning colder as the sun dipped lower, and it was with a sinking sensation in his stomach that Nash realized the reality of their sleeping situation.
Especially because Lawrence was next to him, too close and in the ******** middle. Melvin was on the other side.
"Get the ******** away from me," Nash snapped, feeling, not for the first time, grateful for the fact that on any given day he wore at least three layers of clothing, and had more stashed away in his bag. "I'm not sleeping next to your sorry a**."

He stared as Lawr came up and plopped himself in the middle, knowing the full reason why. He had always been naturally cold, something that Melvin could take advantage of in order to just invite himself next to Lawr to offer him heat in the way of physical contact. It added a physical need among many of the other needs when he had been with him. Considering it was October in Michigan, the night would get even worse. "I didn't see any usable blankets in the giftshop." Most giftshops in zoo weren't equipment with warm things as most people only visited in the summer before the zoo closed for the season. A few salvagable t-shirts wouldn't even be worth it in the end.
He stood there, watching as Nash sat and snapped back at Lawr. "I grew up north. It's going to get a lot colder tonight. I packed a sleeping bag, but it's just one. For us to actually be warm without a fire, we can't all be separately insulated in our coats and this platform isn't big either." He said, trying to soften what this meant. It didn't mean stripping down to nothing, though he briefly wished that kind of sandwich was even possible for him in this scenario.
"I can sit behind the both of you if that helps keep you two warm." Lawr seemed animate to be in the middle through.

Misery had been the place that Lawrence had allowed himself to move to when they had climbed up to the platform, misery in the place of the restless irritation that had exemplified him the whole time they'd been walking about. However Nash pitching a massive fit about being anywhere near him only brought him back to the previous place.
He was angry not just because of the other man's ridiculousness but out of frustration at his own limitations and somewhere also some residual memory of the homophobia of his brother and father. Men didn't cuddle, men didn't touch. Perhaps if it wasn't for the medication he'd have lashed out sharply for the slight, all claws and indignation, but right now he just gave Nash a flat look before choosing to ignore his protest and stay where he was.
Melvin said it would be colder still that night and the thought twisted up bitterly in him. He wouldn't get any sleep, it was guaranteed, especially not with Nash being surly and his usual stupid self about everything.
"Do whatever you like.' he said to Melvin, already feeling the creeping tingles of a shiver across his back and scalp. Huddling up a little more he tucked his arms into his sleeves and hugged himself under the fabric. He wished he'd worn even more layers than he had. It was stupid. He'd lived in Sweden for long enough to know how to dress for the cold, but when you were on a tropical island it all just felt distant.
At least he'd only have five fingers to get frostbite.

He felt a growing sense of impending frustration. Lawrence was, for all intents and purposes, a ******** stubborn child who, since he wanted to get his way, was now going to sit and do nothing until he got said way. And Nash was not about to go to sleep curled up next to someone he hated and who likely hated him just as much.
And who also was either trying to keep him away from Melvin, or was just trying to stay warm. Both were likely possibilities, and both were probably true, which made it all the more irritating, because if there was anyone Nash was going to sleep next to, it would be Melvin. Not his creepy ******** stalker ex lover.
Not the guy who'd somehow managed to find and identify all of Nash's weaknesses and was now jabbing a knife in them just because he could.
"No," he said, and it was less snappish and more just a simple statement of fact, Nash feeling the anger low in the pit of his stomach. He pushed himself to his feet, ignoring the shiver of cold that went through him as he turned to face outwards, arms wrapped around himself. "You two can cuddle or ******** or do whatever you want, I'm going to stand watch so we don't ******** die."

There wasn't much space for them to do much of anything, and he felt the exhaustion of still adapting to life back on land complied with the issues between the two which had been nothing but jabs and remarks since the lighthouse. Standing up, he looked at Lawr who was stubbornly maintaining his spot and uncaring with what actually was decided - though he was sure he would be once something was done that he didn't like.
Moving closer to Nash, he reached out for him. "Nash." He said, not exactly sure what to say to him. He hadn't even had time to really make amends for the fight that happened down in Atlantis between them all.
"I'm not ******** Lawr. It's not cuddling. It's trying to keep warm. I....I had hoped you'd help me keep from freezing my a** off. Keep me warm." He breathed out, looking pleadingly over to him before he moved a little closer to whisper. "I missed you."
"How about I sit in the center? Everyone can be warm. I can't maintain much body heat without your help....and.......I know you are warm." The night on the rooftop said as much.
