None of them had apparently been able to sleep there, though Soleil had made an valiant effort, with her shoulder propped up on Zane's hip, head pillowed in his lap. It wasn't the most comfortable, but at the very least she had his warmth, and that was a definite improvement, if short lived.

She snapped to attention as everyone else did, scrambling up onto her feet and summoning her weapon, more by instinct than design, but either way she was armed as she rushed to joined the others.

The thing that faced them was big and ugly, with massive wings and large, crushing beak. Like something out of the games Luna was always playing, but this was not a game.

Zane rushed in, throwing his gauntlet wrapped arm at the bird, and as he fell back, Soleil was there rushing in, swinging her scythe back over her shoulder to bring it down over the birds naked head. Only her blades never connected. Instead she found herself being knocked aside by an over sized beak to the stomach that sent her head over feet backwards.
