Sanibel could feel the cold prickle of fear down her spine as she moved through the village she'd called home. Others looked to her and smiled, some told her it was a noble thing she did. Some even gave her small gifts, flowers for her hair--a bouquet to great death.

There was no mistaking it, that was what lay beyond in that cave.

Standing at the mouth of the cave, she felt almost as though the cave was breathing. The tides going in and out of it slowly like sleeping breaths. Inside there was nothing but darkness.

Sanibel closed her eyes, taking deep steadying breaths. She had been chosen, not because she was the best. She was not the greatest singer or the strongest warrior. She had no call to fame or glory. But she was good. A pure soul they said, as they gave her her fate.

Because she was so inherently good....She opened her eyes and took several small steps into the cave. Something like a whisper reached her ears, but she could not make out the words.

They had chosen her because they knew she would not say no. She would not flee. She would not fight. She would go to her death because it meant saving everyone she loved. Her little siblings would emerge from their baskets into a safe world. Her parents would forget their grief for her in their joy for the new lives they had.

The darkness was thick, as though you could breathe it in like sea smoke. All of those reasons were enough for her to do this thing despite the fear that raged through her system. Love. Love for them and love for Avalon.

While Sanibel walked to her death, a willing sacrifice all eyes would be turned toward her and the cave. No one would notice as Avalon slipped away into the night to find something more than this. She would be safe, because if Sanibel must die then she wanted to at least take something from the cave--something it could never ever have. If Avalon fled, then she had done her purpos-

Something shifted in the water next to her. There was nothing but blackness so close she couldn't see the walls directly to her sides. Then someone was screaming and at the same time she felt the wetness of blood on her neck.

She had to help them! She wished she could see! But the screaming went on and on and the blood around her grew thicker. She felt cold with fear.

No, she thought. All that blood....all that screaming. It's me."
