Lysander didn't even know what the word discreet meant, the moment he was on his ATV he was revving the engine and getting to know it almost immediately. He tore off ahead as fast as the thing could go, happily tearing around windy paths in search of the next cabin.
"Me too!" he called eagerly over the loud sound of engines.
It was a long way up to where the trees thinned out a bit and the vague shape of what had once been a cabin stood. There probably wasn't going to be a goat man here he figured and was about to turn around when he stopped a barn.
"Want to go in?" he asked Roswell. "It looks a bit...flimsy."

The next cabin they find is missing except for an outline and a chimney. Harrison dismounted to nudge some rocks around with the toe of his boots.
Quote: The barn appears, despite the general disrepair, to have been used recently for something. You find the following things in a row: an empty plastic container of the kind used to transport small animals, a small plastic kennel, a large crate of the sort used to house a dog (there is a very worn leather collar hanging on the corner), a pen with a dirt floor covered in the hoofprints of a goat or sheep, a stall full of fresh hay and the droppings of either a cow or a horse, and finally, a stall with an old farmer's jacket hung from the corner and a coil of rope in the center, cut cleanly through. There is, in the back of the barn, an old, crumbling table tilted slightly upwards, scored with a deep groove that is stained a dark reddish-brown.
Tom stuck close to Lysander, admiring the just-turning leaves. He knew they were supposed to be earning their keep, and he knew the dangers were probably very real. Still, he liked the feeling of his arm just against Lysander's, and it was difficult to be threatened by the rustling of trees and the beautiful, slightly-cooler air.
"This isn't overnight, is it?" Tom asked. "We're just looking over the grounds for a few hours?"

Lysander pushed the barn door open slowly, cautious of anything running out or something horrible potentially lurking within. Roswell seemed to be enjoying himself at least, something he found oddly reassuring. "I hope not." he said to the dusty mess within the barn. "I think it'd be a lot lot worse at night."
He slipped inside to look through the possessions inside, feeling pretty bad to see the dog's things.
'Someone cared about that dog." he said sadly, before peering over into the stall. "Horse." he said with the definitive tone of someone who had seen a whole lot of horse s**t in their day.
"Nothing really suspicious in here, just seems like a homestead sort of thing, horse, pet sheep or whatever. Goat? Was it their goat we saw?"
He hesitated and looked a little spooked. "It doesn't really jive with everything else though, the cabin being gone and all."

Roswell, who was not an expert with investigations, nonetheless fetched a stick to break apart the droppings. He put his hand close, but didn't touch them.
"Warm," he said. "You don't think it's the same dog? It wasn't well-fed." While he was on the floor, he took closer stock of the footprints. "You're sure it's horse? The prints on the floor are cloven. The goat we saw earlier?"
Roswell stood, shaking his head. "Alright, so someone's been keeping animals. Still, you'd think people would know the difference between a goat and a man."
The red caught the corner of his eye, and examining the table, Roswell said, "Killing animals, rather."
Gil whickered, getting a lingering sense of Fear.
Surely not, Roswell thought back.

"Dont know." Lysander said. "Maybe. This whole place feels off to me. Bad energy. Negative energy."
Herald felt it, the lingering strangeness of something out of place, but couldn't express it to Lysander in a way he'd understand. His own comprehension of magic seemed fine for now.
When he spotted the table, he moved over to eye the sinister groove in it. "Do we know it's animal?" he said. "People slaughter animals all the time, this doesn't seem right. There's no other slaughter paraphernalia, no tethers, no drains, no anything other than a stain. It feels wrong somehow."
He shivered. "Yeah we should go." he said. "Nothing else in here."

"I have not slaughtered animals," Tom said, very stiffly. "So, yes, I suppose it could be someone's blood. Or mold."
"You two done in here?" Harrison asked, crouching to see under the tables and in the plastic crates, and finding nothing of else of interest, heading out again.
"Everything out here's supposed to be abandoned. They don't let anybody live up here. Let's go down the road a piece. See if there's anything else."
Quote: 41 - 50: You pass through a clearing. The distant trees silhouetted against the sky toss gently back and forth. It's quite lovely, really, until you realize that there is no wind.

"Well yeah, but you aren't rural." Lysander said, as if this was an explanation for everything. "Maybe it was some wandering farmer or something, those exist right?" Lysander was still mostly upset about the dog and wanted to get back out into the open.
It was nicer out here he thought, watching the trees sway in the wind, right up until the point that he noticed there wasn't any wind, it was a still day and the branches seemed to be moving on their own.
He felt in subtle ways that he was losing his mind.
"We should head back." he said, not about to even try and bring up what he'd just noticed.
