He gave her a curious look, his head tilting as the tall boy offered his short girlfriend a smile. She picked him? As in...had she been trying to decide between choices?
No, that was silly. Clearly he was misinterpreting her wording or she was selectively choosing them in an attempt to dodge the dreaded L-word while still managing to be the sweet, wonderful woman that she was.
Yes, surely that was it.
Turning his head, he pressed a kiss against her knuckle as his eyes closed. Aurora saw him as her prince, just as he saw her as his princess. No, it wasn't love - but it was as much as he could have ever asked for from a girl he'd been so scared of startling away. She was wonderful. Perfect. Amazing. She was Aurora.
"How can I argue with logic like that?" He finally mused in return, his happiness evident in his expression, "Every Prince needs his Princess and I have the fiercest one around."
As if intending to interrupt their romantic interlude, a loud crash echoed from the depths of the kitchen, followed by a pitiful meow.
Brown eyes widened as he glanced in the direction of the noise. "What did you say dinner was, again?"

Everything was soft between them from the way he held her to the brush of his lips against her skin. Even his voice was soft in comparison to the harsh tha-thumping of heart and she thought she felt herself swaying while she waited for him to say something.
"Akio, I--" The sound of something crashing to the ground drowned out anything she might have said or wanted to say. Almost immediately she was pulling away, bare feet already padding over to the kitchen where she found the large orange maine coon in the midst of the salmon she had carefully spent the evening preparing.
"Bob," she gasped in an exasperated manner upon arriving at the scene. Rory went to rub her face but had to stop, fingers against her cheek when she remembered that she had put make up on.
"Come on Bob, you know I had some for you. Couldn't you have waited?" The frown on her face and the fingers pushing back her bangs said everything about how she was feeling. Dinner was ruined and now she didn't know what to do."

Right at her heels, her six foot-one inch boyfriend was behind the culinary chef of the evening, eyes wide as he stumbled upon the scene of the "crime" shortly after she did.
The large beast (or Bob, as Aurora affectionately called it) was sitting among a pile of kitchen debris. Utensils and bowls were casualties scattered across the tiled flooring, the salmon laying dead center of the floor - one piece struggling to stay on the plate that she'd scraped it off of while the other rested tragically on the tile, directly in front of the oversized Maine Coon.
It astonished him that the cat wasn't ignoring the tiny woman and chowing down on the available feast. In fact, the feline looked downright... well, almost remorseful over his actions. Ears were flattened against the top of his head as wide eyes looked up at the couple pitifully.
"Hey now, Bob just wanted to get started on the dinner part of the evening early, that's all," Akio chimed in, hand reaching out to take hold of his exasperated girlfriend's. The smile didn't waver as he squeezed her fingers and then released them, moving to take his seat among the clutter and by the orange cat, who suddenly gave him a stink eye before looking back towards his mistress.
Akio wasted no time righting the dish with the remaining salmon piece, then nudging the piece of lost fish towards the cat. He even dared to reach out and scratch the cat behind the ears - and the beast didn't bite him, for once! He actually seemed resolved to remain indifferent, looking at the salmon Akio offered him before looking back to Aurora, almost as if he was asking for permission.
"Come join Bob and I - you and I can share the other piece and maybe we'll go out for ice cream later, to finish up this perfect evening?"
One hand extended out towards the teenager.

For some reason Rory felt like she might burst into tears with frustration welling up inside of her with enough force that it took more strength and energy to keep her in place instead of stomping off. It was Akio's birthday and despite her desire to just abandon the mess and disappear into her bedroom, she couldn't.
Rory didn't say anything for a while, fingers pinching the bridge of her nose as she breathed in then out.
Anything Akio was saying was lost, white noise in the vacuum of her struggling to keep from falling apart in front of both boys. The teen knew that she was being dramatic, or that she was about to be dramatic, but she didn't know if she could help it. "You two eat. I'll - " Rory worried the bottom of her lip. "I need a minute."
Jade eyes glanced at the outstretched hand and she hesitated, nearly taking it before she moved to step around them and leave the kitchen, walking past the living room and straight for the front door because she needed a moment alone. Rory was also desperate for a little fresh air too.

"Aurora, wait - I didn't mean..."
The hand that remained in the air eventually fell back to his side as the young woman, on the verge of being tearful, fled the room. Instinctively, he was already ready to push off the floor and follow her but something told him to stay put. When a woman said she needed a minute, it was a comment that needed respecting and the last thing he wanted to do was upset her even further.
Sighing, he heard the front door close and debated rising for the sake of rising as long legs curled beneath his weight. The young man glanced over at the cat who continued to glance his way, a silent truce clearly forming over the occasion... or, maybe, the cat didn't see the tall boy as a threat to his fish.
"You know what we need to do now, cat."
The orange Maine Coon's lip snarled up, but he didn't hiss. "Meow."
"You wanna make it up to her, right?" One hand rose as he wagged his finger almost chidingly. Oh god, he was turning into a cat person just like his girlfriend and he didn't even like cats. Cosmos help him.
Scooting up, he gave the cat a stink eye that said don't you dare in reference to the fallen salmon before moving to pick up all of the spilled objects. They were organized and replaced back in the sink and countertops, Akio moving to rectify a few small changes before returning to scene of the crime, towel in hand.
A few adjustments and he was staring at the cat again, a knowing look in both of their eyes. They didn't like what was going to happen next but they both knew what needed to happen. It would be horrible. It would be terrible and awkward and probably the least comfortable thing for either male but for the sake of their Rory, they knew it needed to be done.
Whenever Aurora would eventually return to the kitchen, the mess would be the first thing she'd notice was missing. Instead, two plates were laid out upon a towel imitating a picnic cloth, two glasses sitting by each plate that both held a fair amount of the beautiful food she'd so obviously painstakingly made for Akio's birthday.
Akio was sitting opposite the kitchen's entrance, legs folded with a giant orange Maine Coon in his lap. The salmon on the plate in front of the birthday honoree was already cut up, the tan young man slowly feeding pieces to the semi-disgruntled looking cat as he popped every other piece into his own mouth. Even Bob's tie was straight, the cat, despite his expression, sitting up straight and dapper-like.
They were behaving for the only person they'd bother trying to impress.

She was outside longer than she intended.
Back pressed against the wooden door, Rory took her time calming herself until she felt like she could breathe without feeling like her throat might close up or tears might pool in her eyes. She had spent too long attempting to do make up for the occasion that she wasn't going to let it be ruined over what she knew was her overreacting.
But her emotions were frayed as was with everything that had happened in the last month.
Once she finally felt composed enough to come back inside to find her boys sitting together trying to be cordial and friendly. It didn't take a genius to figure out what they were doing and why. "You're both dummies," she stated affectionately, stepping over to where Akio sat to bend over and press a kiss to the top of his head. From there, she knelt to lean and press her forehead against Bob's.
She had been at odds with her guardian for a few days but he had stuck around, determined to be there for her if she needed it and she was grateful for it.
"Can we move this to the couch and watch a movie? I just -- I'm sorry. "

The amount of time it took Aurora to return was borderline alarming. The two boys had nearly finished their salmon by the time she'd finally come back into the kitchen, Akio breathing a silent sigh of relief while Bob chewed away at the last large hunk of fish. The young man's pants were helplessly covered on cat hair by that point, but it was worth it, he determined, once he earned his kiss on the head and the affectionate insult.
At the request for a change in scenery, Akio wasted no time in delivering the oversized cat to his girlfriend's arms, stooping down to retrieve her plate of food and both drinks. The clean up would come later - her happiness was his concern, first and foremost - so the young man ushered both her and her cat into the living room as he followed behind dutifully.
"Anything but Moana," he teased, knowing their history with the cute-but-clearly-cursed children's movie. "Something happy, maybe?"
Taking his seat upon the couch, he set the food and drinks on the coffee table in front of them before reaching up to tug his girlfriend down into his lap, the cat forced to follow suit.

Rory cradled the large cat, who almost looked too large in her arms, against her chest while she watched her boyfriend pick up the plate of food she probably didn't have the stomach to eat now. But she wasn't going to tell him that of course. Instead, she allowed herself to be ushered into the living room and then his lap as he tugged her into it.
Almost immediately she snuggled into his chest, fingers absentmindedly scratching behind Bob's ears while she readjusted to be more comfortable.
"I don't care what we watch," she mumbled quietly, feeling ashamed of the fact that she had deterred his birthday and made it about her instead of keeping it about him. But, like the wonderful boyfriend he was to her, Akio didn't seem to care. Fingers continued to scratch under fur and she shifted to kiss Akio's cheek.
"You're the best boyfriend ever," she mumbled, closing her eyes as she tried to make herself relax and focus on the boys that were almost desperate in their attempts to make her feel better.

His hand stretched up and he brushed a wave of turquoise out of her face, leaning forward to press a kiss against her forehead. She still seemed upset, but she was there and it was the best thing he could ever ask for. The hand sank down to rub her back gently.
"This has been the best birthday I've had in a long time, beautiful." Another kiss, another squeeze to her waist as he pulled her in tight. His free hand flicked the television remote's power button while brown eyes avoided the gaze of the glaring cat only inches away from his face.
And, considering he had the most amazing woman currently snuggled in his lap? It truly, truly was the best.
