Witty Punching Bag

PostPosted: Fri Sep 01, 2017 8:20 am

It wasn't until he was further down that tunnel that he saw it. A large gray mass this time, and from a distance it looked like a very large, very fluffy gray cottonball-cloud thing empty holes for eyes. It was floating along, minding its business, possibly guarding the doors he could see just past it. He cautiously got just a bit closer, enough to see a bit more detail. From here he could see that its body was, in fact, very fluffy, and occasionally he would see a flash of white from its insides. But there was something else about it that was disturbing him, and that was the fact that its insides were moving.

Not in time with it or the way its puffiness sort of got tossed around by the occasional draft. No, it looked like smaller clouds wrestling inside, their faces popping out of the cloudy main body every now and again. It looked like they were trying to find a way out of the main body, and the more he stared the more dread he felt weigh him down.

‹ That looks about as friendly as the last thing you got too close to. Let's. Leave. ›

'I can't.'

‹ Yes, you damn well can! One foot in front of the other, exactly the way you got here. ›

'Z--'

‹ LEAVE. WE NEED TO LEAVE. NOW. GO NOW. BEFORE IT SEES YOU. ›

Rhys ignored her knowing he had to get closer, but with his arm the way that it was and just generally being tired from the blood loss and having to deal with Zephira freaking out (and yes, she was started freaking out again) he had to wonder if he'd be able to get information that would be useful and worth the risk.

Surprisingly, the decision was a lot easier than he thought it would be.

He stepped forward and stayed as close to the wall as he could, his focus entirely on the Cloud. He was only a few steps closer when something pop out of the Cloud's mouth. It was a greasy thing at first, just a black ball of slime, but within seconds the grease dissipated and it looked like a baby cloud. Within a few more seconds its puffiness took on a shape and solidified, sprouted a variety of eyes and appendages, and skittered off into one of the entrances on the other side.

The trainee had to keep himself from gagging.

Unfortunately he couldn't actually keep it down and he sort of hurled very loud and noticeably where he was standing. The Cloud must have heard him as it floated close enough and swatted him with a very, very hard but still puffy looking appendage. Rhys was still too busy hurling to make an attempt to dodge, and he wound up splayed out on the floor, very badly bleeding again. He writhed for a moment as the pain shot from his arm through his body again, but he knew that getting up would only get its attention again so eventually he forced himself to lay still. After a while he looked up and noticed that the Cloud had gone back to guarding the entrances, so he very slowly, very quietly got up and glued himself to the wall again.

The trainee was taking deep breaths from a good distance away to try and clear his head, though he couldn't quite shut out the pain anymore. It was kind of all over him, from his arm and from the attack he just had to deal with from the Cloud. When he felt ready enough though, and against Zephira's constant shrieking advice to get out of there, he tried to get close and see what else there was to see.

He managed to get pretty close again when the draft made him sneeze, because that was his luck, and he got the Cloud's attention again. Rhys was about ready to dodge but the Cloud was too quick and got him right in the face. Again. And Rhys was on his back, again in pain and soon enough playing dead until the Cloud forgot about him and went about its guard duty.

The brunette could barely stand up so he actually crawled to the wall and pulled out some runic bandages, patting himself on the back for actually thinking ahead enough to bring some. He patched up what little he could--his arm was not among the things he could just slap a bandage on and expect it to magically get him to one-hundred percent again--but it helped a little.

Feeling a little better after the little patch-up job he did on himself, Rhys staggered back onto his feet. Slowly, though he really didn't have any other way to go about things in the state that he was in anyway, he tried to move up closer to see what else he could observe about the freakish Cloud. He wasn't sure how many more creatures it burped up while he was off trying not to pass out, and if it was really the reason behind the infestation than at the very least he wanted to have more to write up so they'd come better equipped to kill the dang thing when they come back.

He was inching closer and closer, still against Zephira shrieking and continued freak-out, but he might have taken one step too many. The Cloud turned and saw him again, it's empty black eyes bore straight into him and he saw them flash white. Despite himself he gripped his sword tight and took a step back, on the defensive as it approached. The eyes flashed again and it opened its mouth. Rhys blinked for a moment and readied himself to take a swing, but all at once a multitude of appendages came shooting out from the depths of the Cloud, spewing some black goo everywhere and all over him.

    ‹ RUN. RUN. RUN! ›

It was more the surprise that overtook him, and despite his best efforts he was simply overrun by the Cloud. The last thing he saw was the gray mass floating away before everything went dark.

The Rescue
There was some shuffling of feet and flashes of light, and at one point he could hear voices, and then humidity wrapped itself all around his very cold body. He couldn't make much sense out of what was happening but he at least felt safe; the voices were familiar, that was probably why. The best he could make out was a hazy sky for a few seconds at a time, but eventually everything just went dark again.

Rhys had been awake for several hours now but just kept his eyes closed. For the most part he knew where he was based on the sounds and the chatter: he was safe and back at the base in one piece. The only bad part was that he was injured (he could feel that) and probably not in a good enough state to go back to HQ just yet. He took the time to go back over the mission in his head, making sure all the notes and details he'd taken were still there. Zephira actually helped him piece it together too; apparently she'd been paying attention while in the middle of freaking out, so that was a bonus for him.

‹ You set off a lot of traps. ›

'I remember a dart and spikes...but you were yelling so much it was ********' distracting.'

‹ Considering what happened to you, you probably should have listened ot me. ›

That was fair, and he smiled very flatly at the admission that she was right. She didn't comment about it and went quiet as well, and he thought he heard the tail end of an apology before she went totally silent, so he was back to going over the details again and again to make sure he had everything straight. Eventually he did open his eyes and the medic came and attended to him, told him what happened and that he'd be able to go back to HQ and get a more complete treatment at the infirmary there. He only nodded along until they were done, and then he asked for a piece of paper and a pen. And painkillers.

Lots of painkillers.

Surprisingly being hopped up on painkillers helped him focus a little more, so as soon as he was able to the trainee scribbled down every little thing about the mission that he could remember, in order, and made a few extra notes about the Cloud that he saw at the end. He wrote it all down first, and then gave a verbal report a little later to the Death hunter that had been on the team before going back to sleep. He passed on dinner as he wasn't in the best of moods; it was a mission he'd specifically been selected for and passing out and needing to be rescued wasn't exactly the best display of his skills. Still, it was something.

Sort of.

Rhys wound up actually staying up for most of the night, still hopped up on painkillers and still annoyed that he needed rescuing. That was the thought that kept him up, and it made him realize that he'd been far too focused on just the fighting aspect of the job that he skimped out on a lot of the other skills. He needed to fix that, and he spent most of the night coming up with a rough game plan to go about doing that. By morning he was starving and still in need of more painkillers, but he managed to get up and out of bed with a bit of help, and by nightfall he eventually made it to the portal back to HQ.
