This didn't seem to calm Fred down very much. "Bisexual?? What the ******** is that, that's just some bullshit made up s**t. You just never dated because you were a f** I guess, I should have suspected it but.." he looked honestly upset for once, normally unruffled by almost everything, treating life in general like one big stupid joke for his benefit. "You can't be that, it's just stupid. He changed you, he's got you saying all sorts of weird s**t."
He followed Roswell irritably.
"And no ******** pay. NO PAY. Are you listening to yourself? Can you imagine if someone had been like oh yes, Roswells, we'd like you to do this thing for no pay. How did you even manage to get it suspended? Don't tell me it was Lysander who managed that too."
He clenched his hands tightly.
"Gay and whipped." he said. "Why did you ever leave?"

"Oh yes, sure. Why do I even tell you anything? Now that's all you'll both be saying. By the way, have you met my gay brother? My assistant's one of the gays, he can probably tell you all sorts of gay trivia! I left because I went to prison, Fred, although I'm sure that's nothing you can understand, either. Nothing I want has mattered at any point to anyone at all. Least of all to you or Lysander."
Roswell snatched a clipboard and furiously wrote in Fred's information.
"I'm right back on a prison island with a violent organisation."

"I wouldn't tell ******** anyone I had a gay brother." he said, looking disgusted. "I'd keep it quiet to save my own ******** embarrassment. No one wants a ******** bender in the family, it's just a ******** mercy you are too busy being a workaholic to go and find yourself a guy in a skimpy crop top." he shook his head.
"It can't even have been prison that made you like that, we both went to prison. I was fine, I'm still fine. You left after because you couldn't hack it, you couldn't handle the life. You quit and it was stupid."
He rolled his eyes. "And cry me a ******** river for your stupid misfortune. No one ever cares what anyone wants. The world doesn't care. You think you have it figured out and wham everything changes, you fall down the rabbit hole. It surprises you, you think you've got it right and then suddenly you've got a drug habit, you think it'll go better and then your brother is gone."
He snorted. "You keep coming back to the life because deep down you like it."

"I'm not going to argue with you about this again. You don't mind prison, I do. You've got hang ups about your sex life, I don't. Nobody mistakes us for each other. We're not the same person, Fred, and I'm not going to spend all my time yearning for the old days that weren't any good to begin with. I never came back to the life. I left it. This isn't that."
He signed the bottom of the clipboard, and taking Fred to the entrance hall of the building, shook out his umbrella.
"It is an island, by the way. In the Bermuda Triangle. We're also under a constant and magical assault of rain, for reasons I can only begin to guess at."

Fred shut up when Ros said that the old days weren't any good to begin with, not sure how to even respond to something that managed to wound him so expertly. He clenched his teeth tightly for a few moments, not trusting himself to speak and knowing that even if he acted on the instinct to right hook the other man he'd only injure his own knuckles.
"Magical rain." he said again, but it was with less emphatic delight at Roswell's irritation than it had previously been.

"Apparently," Roswell said, holding the umbrella up for both of them. "It was actually nice here, before this. It's still an island. Not as though we got many beach trips."
The wet sand was firm, but still got on their shoes, and the cave itself was nothing impressive, tucked well out of the way with a long and dark staircase. Something gentle glowed at the bottom.
"I'm going to explain this the best I can. And please, I know it's ridiculous, but I'm going to use plain terms. At the bottom of the stairs will be shelves containing tablets. You must pull your tablet from the shelf. You'll know which one. There will be whispering coming from it. The rest, you'll figure out in very short order. The whisper will turn into a voice you can never get rid of, and also the beginnings of a power that develops over time."

Fred fell into step with Roswell with a habit of a lifetime, exactly the same height to take advantage of the shelter. He found himself still mulling somewhat on the previous hurtful conversation, even as they arrived.
"Right." he said. "Magic tablets, headvoices, power." And it didn't bother him that it was all completely mad. Sometimes you had to do two impossible things before breakfast and that was fine, he didn't care all that much about logic, taking things at face value and just rolling with it.
"I'll be back in a minute then." he said. 'Don't go anywhere, I don't want to walk back in the rain. If you do need to leave because I know how very very busy you are running around doing pro bono work, then at least leave the umbrella."

"I'll wait," Roswell told him. "If I'm gone, I've been eaten by one of the sea monsters that seem to accompany the rain."
And he gave an actual nervous look to the not too far off shoreline.
He also pulled out his phone to leave a message for Lysander, saying onlyYour brother, Gil said, curiously. He seems nice enough. A bit schemey.
You mean, besides trying to kill me at first sight? Roswell asked Gil peevishly.
You didn't seem to mind, Gil said.
Roswell just fumed under the umbrella. He's always like this. He just has no regard for anyone that deserves his regard.
