"We're identical," Roswell said. "But we don't make the same choices. He has terrible taste in girlfriends, for one."

He stiffened at the mention of dreams. They'd discussed them briefly, but Roswell was trying to face that this was the reality of it. They'd been here. Their consciousnesses had been projected. They were tied to mythical creatures who had been bound into weapons, and without that bond, they would die here.

"I don't even think he'll be happy to see me. It's probably the same. Trying to come to terms with losing me, and that's all."

"I think a lot of guys make questionable decisions about partners." he said, giving Roswell himself a bit of a concerned look.

"Really? I think he'd be happy, if he was so upset that he went and got your name tattooed on him, I think he probably missed you."

He leaned his chin on Ros's shoulder, stooping to do it. "I never understood what happened between you both. You don't talk about your past much beyond glancing comments."

"He's violent and completely unstable," Roswell said flatly, "and I had no desire to return to that lifestyle, which he found very difficult to accept. There's no larger mystery. Except, sir, that you should believe me when I say he is dangerous, and our relation to each other has very little bearing on decreasing the level of danger involved. I would go far as to say it encourages it."

He looked mopey nonetheless.

"He's...sir, he's the worst."

Lysander still found it hard to relate the Roswell he knew to the sort of lifestyle he had uncovered when doing his background checks. And even that hadn’t been all of it he assumed, only the things anyone had caught him for. It was just so difficult to tie the small and slim man who accompanied him everywhere to anything more wild and dangerous than a vigorous cleaning session. Tom just didn’t feel like a thug, even with the mess his eye and ear were in and deep down Lysander wondered sometimes if he’d just tried to look tougher than he was for some reason, maybe caught up in some tale of subterfuge and taking the blame for some darker power.
It was easier to believe than him being part of a criminal past. “I don’t like disregarding what you say.” He said. “I just find it really really hard to believe from everything I’ve seen. I like to think I’m a very good judge of people and to me he seemed like a good person, just like you seemed like a good person too.”
It was also difficult for Lysander to accept that there were people out there who would hurt him for no reason, he liked to think that people were overall reasonable if you talked to them carefully and that they could be brought around to see sense. This applied even to Roswell’s brother. “I think I could make him see sense and he seemed to like me anyway when we first met, it was a good impression. I think both of you just had a rough patch, I’d like nothing better than to see you both be friends again.”

"With all due respect, sir, you are a terrible judge of character. You *do* remember that cult leader in Barbados? The one who you thought seemed like a *good person*?"

Roswell gave Lysander a pained look at the last request.

"Of all the things you could ask me..." He fiddled very hard with his hands. "It may not matter," he said quietly. "We'll...we'll just have to wait, I suppose."

--

Lysander remembered the man, he’d seemed like a good person with good intentions and a bright and fresh concept of what the world could potentially be. It had been a permissible vice that he’d had so many attractive women around him and that he’d been so happy to invite other people to enjoy their company. Roswell hadn’t liked him, but he very rarely liked anyone that Lysander met, typically being on edge around truly enlightened people and more than a little suspicious of spiritual leaders.
He reached out and took a firm hold of the other man’s jaw, enough to leave white marks in his flesh, holding him steady like a disobedient dog. “It will be fine, things will be fine.” He said. “They wouldn’t let someone die for no reason. That’s murder, and for all they say here, they won’t let that happen, if you bonded then so should he, that’s how it works with twins right? Did Gil have any siblings?”
He gently stroked Ros’ bottom lip with his thumb and let him go. “It’s not a demand, I just want you to tell me the full story someday. There’s so little I know about you, when you get down to it.”

"Someday," Roswell promised quietly.

He had avoided getting into it for a long time, and if it weren't for that damned ring everything would have stayed buried, but skeletons were knocking at his door.

You know, I don't remember, Gil said, I might have. I wish I could.

"Gil doesn't know," Roswell answered shortly. Right now he wasn't sure which was worse. ...No, Fred dying was worse. But he didn't want him here.

Lysander's handling of him didn't seem to bother Roswell at all.

"We could ask, I suppose. They must keep that kind of information in the Death records." He stood up again, gaining his feet a little, and adjusting his tie. "Sam works there, doesn't she?"

Lysander gave Roswell a bit of a grim look for his statement. Someday meant not today and that was about the same as always. Part of him wanted to take him and make him spill it, but that would be actual effort and he didn't have it in him right now.

He sighed heavily

"Probably, though wether she'd have access to it or not is another matter."

"We need to up our networking ladder, or climb a little ourselves," Roswell said.

"We were incredibly underprepared for what we've encountered so far. Every time, I can't be certain whether it's another test or nightmare. Even this. I don't think anything's off limits as to what lines they won't cross."

Lysander moved to lean against the pod with a heavy sigh.

"I know, we need to get traction, we need to get better. We need to start over." he exhaled. "I'm just so tired, all the time. I don't want to do this stuff, I don't want to start over or network. The people here are uncivilised and horrible, truly vicious people who would kill someone as quickly as help them. I don't want to be one of those people."

He reached over to straighten Ros's tie up a fraction before leaning back. "Its horrible and I hate it. I don't think I'm ready to stop sulking about it. The fact they took your brother too is just the icing on the cake."
