Shoshana beamed. She also loved her sister's name. She loved everything about her, really. "Devin!" She repeated back enthusiastically, clapping her hands together gently. "That is very interesting! My family and I look a lot alike too. They have dark skin like me, and light hair, but theirs is white!" She laughed gently.

At the explanation of the magic he was interested in, the Frei's already wide eyes grew even larger. "That is amazing! Would you show me some time, Laurel? Please?" She would of course have to ask Phoenix, but she was almost certain he would agree to driving out for a visit. He was always encouraging the girls to make friends. How exciting it would be to tell him she had made a new friend!

"A professor! That is a very good job, yes. And a journal would be very exciting! Would you like help looking for one you like?" Her fins beat rapidly with her eagerness to help.

"He is the owner of a restaurant, just down there!" Shoshana explained, pointing out the window in the general direction of Ambrosia. "It is Greek, Ambrosia. I work there too, sometimes!"

Laurel's ears piqued. Now, wasn't that funny? How could they both have gone to families where they shared similarities with? Obviously, it had to be magic, there was no other logical explanation. They were made for the families they went home with. He beamed.

"Oh, absolutely!" He exclaimed, instinctively reaching for his bag for his special spell book. He stopped short of digging around, though, having remembered that he'd left the book under his bed at home. Darn! He'd have to show her some other time. "Maybe your guardian could call my dad and we could hang out sometime? I could show you then!"

Mhm! Being a professor was super important. Laurel was very proud to have a father who worked to help other people learn, even if it meant he was gone most afternoons. The days they had off together were always nice, though!

"Only if you want to! I'm not looking for anything super special." He said, nodding. Then, his mouth fell agape and drew up into a grin. "You work there? That's so cool! What do you do?"

While Laurel dug around in his bag Shoshana floated closer, momentarily forgetting her manners again as she tried to see what wonders the other Raevan might have in his bag. She didn't get a good look however, before Laurel spoke. "Oh yes, yes that would be lovely! What is your father's name? There is a directory, I will ask my father to call yours!" She was utterly thrilled at the idea.

Taking the initiative to head towards the window where the journals were, Shoshana looked over her shoulder towards her new friend. "A little, yes! I bring the food out, when I can, and do other small jobs. My father says it is important for me to learn how to socialize without, ah, overstepping boundaries, yes? I am learning."

Flashing a smile to the shopkeeper she began to look over the journals, running her strong fingers over the covers of each, enjoying the feel of them. "Laurel, what sort do you like? These are all very pretty."

"My dad's named Oliver Kipling!" Laurel replied, fiddling with the strap on his bag and giving it a bit of a pout. Silly thing, always getting caught in his wings and tangled. He really needed one that was easier to manage. "What's your dad's name?"

He knew that his father had met a few guardians and Raevans before he was born. He'd met Vesna because she'd given Oliver her number and Yuri because Oliver and Yves had been friends, so it lead Laurel to wonder if Oliver knew about Sho's guardian, too. It would be a funny coincidence, and if not, he was sure they'd get along. His dad was a nice guy, after all. Who wouldn't like him?

"Oh wow! That is super important!" He exclaimed, following Sho dutifully with a smile. "I don't think I could ever handle carrying food. I'd feel so jealous of the customers, but I think it's really awesome that you have a job! I think I want to work in a store one day. It looks like fun."

The talk of boundaries made him tilt his head a bit, but he didn't question it. Another word for him to look up at home later, he supposed. Mimicking Sho, he ran a hand against the covers before him and puckered his lips. Hmm, they all were very pretty. How was he supposed to pick a favorite? Couldn't he just take them all? They'd all get used, eventually! He tapped his fingers and sighed.

"It's hard to choose!" He whined, pouting. "There are some with feathers, some with spots, even some here with little animals on them... Which do you think looks best, Shoshana?"

"Oliver Kipling," Shoshana repeated back slowly, testing out the sound of it in her heavy accent. She would forget it immediately. In fact, she already had by the time she opened her mouth again. "His name is Phoenix Argyris! Actually, that is not his real name. But he does not like his real name! Imagine that. So he uses his middle name." She tilted her head. "Do you have a middle name? I do not. My sister does!" She narrowed her eyes a bit, thinking about why that was. She would need to ask Phoenix later.

As they floated towards the journals she smiled to herself. "You should come to the restaurant some time! What do you eat? How do you eat?" She was learning fast that they all had different ways of feeding. She felt like she had it easy, considering anything edible to humans she could sap the nutrients out of. And water was never in any short supply. The thought reminded her that she needed to drink more, and she took a long swig from her bottle as they reached the journals.

Laurel was right. There were so many different types! She continued to run her fingers across each one, as if she were feeling for something more than just texture. She looked at the leather ones, ones that looked old but were likely new as anything. "I think these are very pretty, yes," she said softly, running a finger along the markings in the cover of one, tracing the designs.

Laurel's eyebrows arched with curiosity. So, her guardian didn't go by his real name? That sounded kind of strange to him. Didn't he like the name he was given by his parents? He mulled it over and tilted his head.

"Uhhh, I think it's Qudamah." He replied, the name rolling off his tongue awkwardly.
"Apparently that was my name before I became me? Like, as a cheetah. I don't know if I really like it. I prefer Laurel because it's what my dad gave me when I was born."

And, it came from his father's favorite book. Being named after something his father really liked made him feel proud. It was special. That, and his name was really easy to pronounce. No fancy tongue twisters there.

"I eat the weight from all kinds of stuff!" He chirped, his expression growing sheepish. "But, if I eat too much too quick, I tend to break stuff. I once broke a tv and a bookshelf. Now I try to pace myself and eat little bits every hour or two... What do you eat?"

"Qudamah..." The name sounded even funnier in her tongue, but she smiled all the same. "I like it, yes," she affirmed, returning to looking at the books.

"I do not know the name I had before I was Shoshana. My father and sister told me the story, but they did not know the great horse that gave them my soul." Her brow furrowed a bit. She felt some sadness for the creature she knew had died so that she may live, but more than anything she was curious about where it had come from, who it was. She didn't even know if it was male or female! She only knew what her family did, which was very little.

At the mention of eating weight the Frei looked up in surprise. "That is very interesting, yes!" Weight! That was quite different from anything she had heard before. "I can eat anything I like, just not the way humans do. If I touch food I can take all the good things from it until it crumbles into nothing more than something like sand."

"That's so cool that they told you, though." Laurel replied, running his hand along another cover with a thoughtful expression. "My dad hasn't told me my story yet. All I know is my old name and that my uncle used to take care of me. I don't know anything else."

To be honest, he wasn't terribly interested to know more, either. He lived here now, not with Thatcher, and Thatcher was a jerk anyway. Anything that involved his uncle simply didn't interest him. He wrinkled his nose in thought.

"So, wait, can you taste what you eat?" He asked, his eyes growing wide with curiosity. "And what do you mean by good things? Aren't all parts of food good? Or are some things gross?"

Shoshana couldn't imagine not knowing where she had come from. It had been one of the first things she'd asked her new family. Curious from day one, she had insisted on knowing the story of how she came to be. And that story had strengthened the bond between her and her family like nothing else could have.

"Maybe they will tell you some day, yes," she said softly, unaware of Laurel's disinterest in the story.

Floating back away from the journals and focusing on Laurel she smiled and cocked her head to the side. "I cannot! Sometimes I wonder what things taste like, but my family says that things often taste the way they smell. If I ate like they did I imagine I would taste things, yes. I can taste the difference in different waters." She shook her water bottle a bit.

"And I mean, ah, the nutrients? Yes, nutrients. So all that is left is the extra!"
PostPosted: Tue Jan 23, 2018 1:57 pm

Yeah, he was sure they would tell him one day, and maybe he'd be more interested by then. For now, he was much more focused on what this life could bring him. Nevermind about the past!

"Different waters have distinct tastes." He muttered to himself. Yes, yes, that made perfect sense. There was salt water from the ocean, tap water, and water from lakes and ponds. All of those places had to have different tasting water. He nodded. "So, do you find that there are different nutrients you can get from certain waters or is it kinda the same no matter where you go?"

The Frei looked thoughtful for a moment. "I am not sure. If it is different I cannot tell." She furrowed her brow, but still smiled. "If they taste different, they should be different, yes? But to me water is water, even if it tastes different. At least the water that I have had." She paused for a moment, then laughed softly.
"Salt water is different though. It does not work the same."

Suddenly floating up quite close to Laurel, Shoshana's smile widened. "I would very much like to see how you eat some time, Laurel." Looking over her shoulder, her lips turned into a tiny frown. "I am afraid I must go soon. But after our fathers talk we can see each other again, yes?" She looked excited again for a moment, but the wrinkle returned to her brow. "What was your father's name?"

Water is water. Okay, he could accept that, even if he was curious about why salt water worked differently. Was it just the salt alone or did salt water just not make a good meal? He supposed these were questions for another day!

"Ha! Well, I can tell you right now it's not super interesting..." He laughed, shrugging his shoulders. "But, I wouldn't mind showing you next time we see each other if you're really curious!"

At the mentioning of his father he paused and pulled his phone out. No texts? Hey, Oliver really was letting him have time to himself! ... But, what if something was keeping him from texting? What if he was worried?

"My dad's Oliver Kipling, and your's was Phoenix, right?" He said, glancing toward the door. "I'll make sure to talk to my dad as soon as I find him!" He chuckled awkwardly and turned back to Sho. "It was really nice meeting you, Sho! I hope we can get together again soon!"
