Tobias nodded slowly, stroking Evan’s cheek with his fingers as he let go of his chin. “...I’m going to go out on a limb and say maybe you had a bad relationship at some point? I am perfectly okay with being friends first, but I am interested in you. I haven’t found someone who has made me laugh so much in a long, long time. I find you incredibly endearing, and I would really like to get to know you for the fact that you’re you, and that fact alone.”
He let go of Evan’s hand once again and piled the books up. “If you want me to keep this as professional as possible, and just focus on being friends first, that is perfectly fine. But, I don’t want to end this relationship prematurely, it doesn’t seem fair to either of us to lose out on whatever friendship you and I might share. Think of the possibilities. Even if you just think of all the food we can make…” He paused and laughed again. “Well, the food you can make and we can eat. I’ll learn napkin folding or something to make our tables hella fancy. It’ll be great.”

It had been a long time since Evan’s heart had pounded like this, and he was certain that in no recent times had that been a good thing. Tobias had made his way over several topics he knew weren’t appropriate to discuss with a stranger, no matter how charismatic they were or how desperate you found yourself to belong in society.
He hadn’t shied away from the physical contact, but his skin was crawling. It wasn’t entirely bad, it was just a strange tingle that didn’t seem to fade.
It was easiest for Evan to ignore the first part of what Tobias had said, but his silence on the matter likely didn’t help whatever case he planned to make against the assumption. “Friends, first, is a good idea. I don’t…I don’t do the whole relationship thing. Not really. I don’t think anyone is qualified to put up with me, and if I cared about them then I wouldn’t want them to have to. My only relationship is with the kitchen, so as long as you aren’t holding your breath for anything more from me…I mean, at least you can get some good food out of it.”

“It’s a deal, Evan. Friends first. Kitchen buddies first. Foodies forever.” Tobias stood and stretched, cracking several parts of his back as he did so. He picked up the pile of books rather effortlessly and smiled at Evan once again. “If you’re ready to check out, I’m ready too. Maybe...if you’d like...we could make a quick stop for ice cream on the way home? I’d kill for a milkshake right about now. Don’t know where the craving came from, but I want one real bad.”
He would get what he wanted from Evan, he knew that as sure as he knew his name. He just had to exercise a little patience and take it slowly for now. No big deal. And he was sure the payoff would be wonderful in the end. Tobias grinned at that thought and then laughed again. “Yeah. Real bad.”

Friends first, Evan could do, and now that they were away from the concept of relationships, he finally breathed easier. He didn’t necessarily want ice cream—or, at least, he hadn’t until Tobias made it sound good.
But his nerves were shot and he was ready to be home.
There was, however, an ice cream shop that was arguably on the way home, and Evan had always had good luck there, before.
“…All right,” he finally agreed, claiming his own books. “I know a place, not far away. We could make a pit stop there, if you really want.”
…He just hoped this wasn’t a bad idea.
