"She liked the bracelet, quite a lot, but between you and me she's a great deal relieved that it wasn't a ring. She's still a little confused as to how she finally won the honor of your heart after all this time, so a commitment above your current relationship status would have terrified her. It was a good choice!" He patted Dawson on the back, hard. "Good job."

With a wheeze, Dawson scrabbled not to get knocked over by the gesture.
"Why'd she think I'd..." s**t, that sounded bad coming out of his mouth, but Dawson hadn't even begun to consider that level of commitment at the time he had grabbed the bracelet. It had literally been chosen because it looked pretty and had moons on it
"I wasn' thinkin' past her birthday, really," Dawson amended quickly, in case Thaw took it wrong, scratching the back of his neck. "I reckoned she didn' have many good ones, so, y'know, food n' jewelry t'make up fer it. N' bribe her inta a good mood, heh. N-Not that I wouldn' wanna, y'know, get a ring, but I'ma man've tradition, right, so it wouldn' be right skippin' steps, it wouldn' be treatin' her right, y'know? N' she got so many troubles before, I wouldn' wanna add to 'em righ' now..." Okay he was rambling, but he had to get every single thought out okay.

Thaw gave Dawson an almost pitying smile. He didn't mean to speak so casually of marriage, but, well.. "I wish I could say I knew you well enough to be sure, but I cannot. If you had prematurely asked for her hand, you would not have been the first. Your mind are.. often a mystery to me. Did you know a man proposed to her on the street once? I was quite taken aback, but she informs me that is a common ploy to woo a woman into bed. Quite unsavory, if you ask me."

Dawson barked a laugh. "Tha' doesn't surprise me. She's a bombshell blonde. Uh, really beautiful," he clarified just in case. "Mean, I only seen her once in a club that one time way back, but that was her scene, right?
He waved his hand. "Lotta things're casual nowadays, Thaw. Not the way fer me personally, but tha's how some people go." He wanted to think he was getting better than his more closed minded beliefs had been before. "Mean, tha's sorta how Maebe was too, right?"

Thaw paused a little too long as he thought about the implications of the word "was". He certainly knew Maebe had no casual intentions towards Dawson, at the very least. But had she really changed? "Mm." He decided it was none of his business. "Yes, of course you are right."

"Questions?" Thaw narrowed his eyes and thought long and hard over what he could possibly ask the man. "This is difficult. Normally I would inquire as to your intentions on the child, but you will be pleased to hear that I trust you, Dawson, much like she does. There's little I worry about, when she is with you. I suppose if I had to think of a question, it would not have to do with her at all. How is your child doing? I was made aware that you have acquired a ward. Have you adapted to the responsibility well?"

"Ward...? Oh."
He laughed just a little bit and shook his hands rather than his head. "Naw naw, s'not like that. Meri n' I are roomies really. Besties, I wanna think. She jus' calls me dad ironically."
Some small part of him would never stop feeling good about it, though.
"The small ones're supposed t'have a ward, so if anythin', I guess she picked Caroline? Haven't really asked. I was out fer a while, so." Another small laugh.

Thaw took his time trying to word his next question correctly, before letting it out. So there was a long, strange pause before he said anything. "You share residence with a child who is not your kin or your ward? I find myself confused." And by confused, it was clear he meant worried.

"Yeah, I was, too. But." Dawson shrugged and made a helpless gesture. "What can I do about it, y'know? Not like I can stop Peter Pan or whoever. Even if I could..."
He wouldn't have wanted that responsibility. America had been through enough iterations, more than anyone should have, but that wasn't something he could control. She wasn't. The most he could do was what he always did: protect and serve.
"Just...roomies," he repeated simply. "Tha's the best way I can put it. What, you can't imagine unrelated people just livin' together?"

"Forgive my presumptuous nature, Dawson. I suppose I am rather old fashioned, though I should know better. This facility is filled with others in a similar situation. These.. roomies, as you say." He knew full well that his anxiety was at least partially colored by the jealousy that had always clouded Maebes logical sense. He tried, very hard, to push the thought away. After all, she was so very often wrong. About everything. But he loved her still. "And how is the arrangement working out? Has it been comfortable?"
