"October like the month?" Chris closed his notebook then because writing wasn't happening right now. "No superhero.. like everyone else I guess I'm just a weirdo with a weapon.." Chris smiled small and shrugged. Even if it wasn't much of a weapon. In his mind Jack bristled at the insinuation. "What kind of stories do you like?" He didn't seem keen on the zombie one anyway.

"The very one," said October somberly. "I have a brother named November, too. He's around somewhere."
He looked around as though half expecting to see said brother lurking behind a couch, but he was nowhere to be seen, which was sort of a relief. October peered at Chris with renewed interest, though it was still a little sleepy eyed and tousle haired.
"I like zombies," he said immediately. "But also science. And animals. I like animals. Adventures."

"You know in Halloween it's always October.." Chris blinked. He then shrugged. It was just a little fact but yes, he did read about the work they were doing here. He was no one to judge if a name was cool or weird or not. "I'm not sciencey but I can manage sci-fi well enough. You basically just make up fake science.." Chris pushed his floppy bangs back. "Do you do science here on the island?"

"I've heard this," said October, which was true, but he still hadn't actually been to Halloween yet. He was sort of avoiding it, like he did with everything else that involved actually getting up and doing things that were sort of important.
Maybe.
"Fake science is better than real science sometimes," said October with a nod that indicated he was perfectly serious about this. "I haven't done any science on the island yet, there are no good neuroscience places here."

"That sounds complicated.. " He knew what neuroscience was but things like that were always a bit too much for him to strive for, or even think about. "Did you go to college and stuff? Before here?" He was always curious considering his peculiar and sheltered home life before here. It wasn't something he shared, in fact he generally lied about his life pre-Deus.

"I was part of the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience at the University of Toronto," October said mournfully, as though this was some sort of lost love, taking off his glasses to wipe away a spot. "And a double major in Engineering, but there's nothing here to work on."
He put his glasses back on and squinted at Chris.
"Do you like science? Did you go to school?"

"I moved a lot.." He diverted his eyes to his notebook again, this time closing it consciously and sitting back in the chair and tucked his feet under him, "So I was home schooled." He felt very lacking sometimes but he very direly wanted to be a cool guy so he just shrugged, "I can read and write and do normal math.. that's okay with me. Ran away from home when I could and then I came here.."

October had, surprisingly enough, not been homeschooled in spite of his ridiculously unorthodox upbringing. "Not everyone needs to be able to do things like other people," he said sagely, as though this was some piece of wisdom to impart.
"Why'd you run away?"
It was probably nosy, but October was generally a nosy person on a daily basis, when he wasn't trying to sleep.

"Cause it sucked.." Chris said rather evasively and shrugged. He wasn't keen on talking about his home life though he was a bit jealous of all those who'd got to do things like go to school.. "Here now.. so that's really all that matters right?" Chris's lips twitched into a small smile that didn't reach his eyes. "I can learn things here. I'm pretty sure people get bored enough to impart their wisdom.. right?"

"Yes, what matters is what you do here," said October, which might have sounded like more sage advice, were it not for the fact that October spent most of his time here sleeping and the other half doing whatever he could to avoid work. "And yes, that's right. It's important to find wisdom where you go."
October slid into a cross-legged position on the floor, pulling his jacket around more securely.
"What've you learned so far here?"

Chris did think October sounded super sage. Talking about wisdom and meaning in your actions.. Of course then he thought about his lack of actions and got a bit sad at himself. "Not much. I mean chores are a thing. I could already clean.. Done a lot of that. Helped put the dorms back together after the last.. thing." Event? Braintrip? Collective video game dream? Why were they so common. "I can't even really fight very well.. My weapon is hard to use," Jack growled something about bein a weak boyo and Chris made a face.

"That sounds," said October succinctly, "like effort."
He reached out and gently patted Chris's hand in a consoling sort of way as though to offer Chris his sympathies for having to be exposed to such a thing. Then he withdrew and toyed with the hem of his shirt, peering up at the other with a somber expression that seemed entirely normal on his face.
"What's your weapon?"

Chris's hand seemed to twitch a bit, as if he were very much not used to being touched, but when October's hand withdrew his simply curled into itself and then, in turn, disappeared into his sleeve. "Have you ever seen Kung Fu Hustle?" he blinked quickly a couple of times.

October had slumped back onto the floor, though he hadn't missed the way that Chris had withdrawn.
"What's that?"

"A movie? A kung fu movie.." Though that was probably obvious by the name. "Anyway it's kinda of a martial arts thing but I don't really know any martial arts aside from movies.." But he loved them and probably could fake it if he didn't feel like an idiot doing so. "What's your weapon?"
