Carlee shook her head. “You’re so messed up Arias, seriously.” She reached out and took his hand, squeezing it and laughing again. “Look, how about we just go for ice cream then, since you’re so worried. I’m good with just ice cream, and you don’t even chew ice cream, so no chance of cavities, besides. Milk is good for teeth, right?”

Virell didn’t seem like he really wanted to tell her if things were going well...and therefore...she figured maybe things...just weren’t. With that thought, she figured it would be better just to retreat and regroup with her friend at a later time...at least that seemed like the best course of action at the moment. “Or, if you’re so worried about it, we just won’t get dessert. I don’t want to rupture any of your stomach ulcers, oh brother of mine.”

No, it was time to just get the heck out of there.

---

Nick nodded, looking at the item that Virell was showing him and smiling. “That does look really good. I’d love to split it with you when we’re finished here.” He finally picked something out and grinned at the other blonde when he was finished texting whoever it was that he was texting. But…

For a moment there was a pang of jealousy that coursed through him and he swallowed, reaching over and taking both of Virell’s hands to keep him from texting whoever it was that was more important than he was. This was their night, wasn’t it? Heck. He had done the same thing...but damn, it bothered him that Virell was paying more attention to someone else. It bothered him a lot.

“You’ll come back to my place after this, won’t you? I seriously just wanna kiss you all night...among other things, of course.”

Arias laughed and nodded. “All right, all right,” he said.

Suddenly, it was less about the cavities and more about not wanting her to see what was going on at the table behind them. Nick had taken the blonde’s hands and leaned close; it didn’t look like a friend talking to a friend, and there was a small twist of jealousy in the pit of his stomach—something he was immediately ashamed of and buried. It was replaced with a twinge of concern—worry and fear and betrayal.

He raised a hand to wave the waiter over, eager to get their check and leave before Carlee spotted Nick.

It wasn’t that he didn’t trust his sister, it was just that he didn’t think she could avoid gossiping with their mother if she saw something like that. He locked eyes with the waiter and placed his card on the table.

“We’ll still get the ice cream. I am craving butterscotch, so we can go to that place you like, and then I can drop you off on the way home. Unless you’d rather spend the night?”

--

Virell froze when Nick put his hands over his. His brows were knit, both in question and what might have been worried. Instinctively, he wanted to ask ‘What?’ but he managed to keep his mouth closed just as well as he managed to keep his emotions down.

He laughed, a perfect imitation, and nodded. “I thought that was the plan? I’ve been looking forward to it all day, Nick.”

Truthfully, a part of him would have really liked to go home and just hide—eat ice cream and watch romance movies and cry, but he was an adult and he was going to act like it. He wasn’t going to sacrifice whatever relationship they did have just because Virell had a few stupid emotions.

He craved love and attention and companionship.

It didn’t matter what form, anymore. He was desperate.

He’d take what he could get, and if this was all that Nick could give then he wasn’t going to complain.

Virell put his phone away and took Nick’s hands in his own.

“We should make dinner quick so we can get on with it,” he purred. It was easiest to keep his voice even like that. He winked for good measure, and squeezed Nick’s hands.

Things would be better when they were alone. He could distract Nick with more than just pretty words and gestures.

He could distract himself, too.

It was too late, of course. Carlee had seen the two blondes at the table as soon as she had gotten up and turned around and for a moment, her heart plummeted. Why was…why was Virell here with Nick? That didn’t make any sense…Nick couldn’t be the guy that Virell liked, because he was happily dating Arias and that was just utterly impossible…but they were holding hands and looking into each other’s eyes like that and…

…What had she done?

Quickly, the girl turned back to her brother and smiled. “Hurry, Arias. I really am in the mood for the ice cream, so let’s go before everyone else in the city wants it too, okay?”

She couldn’t let him see the other two at the table, she just couldn’t, so quickly she turned her brother around and began leading him to the door, eager to get the heck out of there as quickly as possible.

What a nightmare.

---
Nick Relaxed when Virell laughed. There was nothing wrong. He had just been worrying himself for nothing. His thumbs drew circles on the male’s hands and he smiled at him, nodding. “It sounds utterly perfect, Virell. Utterly perfect and wonderful.”

He placed a quick kiss on each hand before releasing one of them, still keeping a gentle hold on the other. “…I’m lucky to have you in my life, Relly. Thank you for finding me. Thank you for being here.”

The rest of the night was going to go perfectly. He would fix whatever it was he might have broken. Virell would be happy. Life would go on as normally.

Arias couldn’t argue with getting out of there quickly; he had missed Carlee spying the table with his boyfriend and his…friend. There was a heaviness in the air that he was ready to depart from, and Carlees eagerness to get ice cream meant that he didn’t have to worry about her seeing something he didn’t want her to see.

“Okay, okay,” he laughed, not protesting when his sister rushed him out.

It was hard not to look back; half of him wanted one last look and half of him wanted to pretend like he’d never seen it in the first place.

Resilience won out; he kept his eye on the door in front of them, and on getting Carlee out before things got complicated.

-

What sounded utterly perfect and wonderful to Virell was being told that Nick was madly in love with him and couldn’t stand to be away from him, and they could live happily ever after—a real relationship, and then a real family, and then all the things Virell told himself he’d have one day, when he was happy.

But he smiled, like he was happy, and accepted the scraps he was given and the shadow of what he aspired to have, because anything was better than being alone and it was worth lying to himself and anyone else to keep feeling the way Nick made him feel.

“It’s my pleasure,” he said with a wink.

Dinner couldn’t go quick enough; he wanted to be home, focused on the indecencies of this affair and what parts of it they could both enjoy.

It was complicated, but it was worth it.

Virell didn’t think he’d ever get anything better, anyway.
