"No, I don't think so." Her hand unconsciously reached up to her arm, as if trying to assure herself that her skin was whole, that her name was not carved onto the flesh. "How many lives have you had? I-if it's oks to ask?"

Joy's jaw dropped. She wasn't sure how to take this information. "Four? Pak shet." She knew Jordan was one of the hunters who'd been on the island for a really long time but even considering that, "How do you deal with it? With the loss?"

"I guess the best advice I can give you for it would be: don't try to pretend you don't have feelings about the other life. Don't feel guilty if you feel like the other you was happier. It might've been ******** up in some ways, but let yourself have the happy memories and don't feel bad about that." Jordan shook his head a little. "You can't go back to the other life. Be very suspicious if something offers you a deal like that. But you can keep the memories you have." He sighed. "Maybe be cautious about discussing the subject with other people until you've felt out how they feel about it."

Joy looked properly chastised, an old unshakable habit learned through how many decades of traditional catholic upbringing. She had a lot more questions for him but she figured she'd already bothered him enough and after the whole not intentionally admitting she preferred being a Horseman over being a Hunter, Bert was adamantly insisting that she quit while she was ahead.
"Okidoks," she murmured, "And um, thanks for not, like, reminding me that I'm gonna go to hell or something." That was a joke but the lack of eye contact suggested that she may have heard that particular threat more than once growing up. "Who knows?Maybe I can end up like Sammy and still do stuff to protect Humanity even after I die!"

"I have no idea if hell actually exists, but I doubt it. Anyway, I had enough of that growing up, I wouldn't do it to you." Jordan smiled to show that that was a joke, at least partly. He, too, had been threatened with the concept, and even if his personal beliefs had shifted over time it had once been terrifying. "I hope that won't be anytime soon," he said, quirking a smile. "We still have things to do here." He hesitated a moment, debating with himself, then added, "I keep in occasional contact with Sammy. If you want to talk to her at some point, I can probably arrange it."

"I had a college theo prof tell me that the church eventually decided that hell is just this parang, shet, can't put the tip of my tongue on it," she waved her hand, glad to move the conversation to something more neutral, sort of, "It's not a place-place anymore but ewan how that makes more sense."
The offer to talk to Sammy was gratefully received, "That'd be awesome but hopefully I won't need to bother her and you anytime soon. Although," she gestured back to the coffee, "Can I maybe ask for a cup narin?"

"A concept? I guess it's less concrete when one hasn't met any demons," Jordan said, half a grumble. "Although knowing that demons reside in Halloween instead of Hell kind of mixes things up." "No problem," he said, and turned to continue the process of starting up the coffee machine, putting in the coffee grounds and the water. "A break's nice."

"Yeah, a break. Long stretches of nothing going on has started to make me praning, like, it's just something is gathering its strength and then just dumping all this crazy s**t outta nowhere." It was nice to have someone experienced to talk to about these things but the trainee knew she shouldn't be taking too much of his time.
"And hey, if you ever want extra hands to do clean up, mine are mos def yours!" It wasn't much but it was all Joy could manage at the moment.
