Once she'd opened up the box enough to see what it was, her eyes lit up like it was Christmas. It felt like so long ago, but here he was, bringing her a whole bouquet of the best smelling candied bacon ever, and she didn't regret her own birthday anymore. This made it totally worth it. She squealed, a quiet high pitched sound, and then moved the box out of the way so she could hurl herself at him. Her arms wrapped around his neck and she planted a firm kiss right on his cheek. "You are literally so perfect."

The delightful noise made him light up, and he blushed and laughed as she kissed his cheek. He thought, maybe hereābut Dawson didn't want to overwhelm. One thing at a time. So he enthusiastically returned the hug and laughed some more, as if physical contact was letting him soak up the joy she exuded and then double it back. "I try," he said. "Nothin' but the best fer you, Maebe Grace. Just, uh, don' eat the plant parts." He wasn't going to be the one who broke contact, waiting for Maebe's cue first if she decided. "See? Not so bad."

Her pleased expression quirked with confusion. "Not so bad?" She took a few seconds to try and digest what, out of this perfect moment in his arms could be so bad, until she rolled her eyes. "Oh. You mean my birthday. It's only not so bad because you are the only person that remembered. Which I guess is okay, especially when you give the only gifts that matter." She twisted to crawl forward, grabbed the box, and pulled it towards her. Then she turned fully, and sat on his lap like a content puppy. She was going to eat them right then and there. Well. Some of them. She picked one up two pieces of bacon, held one over her head without looking to offer it to him, and started in on one of her own. "Yeeeeessss! This is what I'm talking about!"

It had only been a few minutes, and he was sure his mouth was going to hurt from how much he was smiling already. "Naw honey, it's yours," Dawson said, gently pushing her hand back down. "I can make some more later if I want." He turned to better see her, letting most of his leg rest on the bed to help support his status as a seat. "I mean, I know yer other birthdays ain' been so great maybe, I guess." Very smooth handling. "But, like...yer alive another year, right? That's good."

She refused to put her hand down. "You know how I eat, Dawson." She muttered, trying to get it into his mouth without being able to see it. This meant poking him. A lot. "My eyes have a bigger appetite than my stomach. Just eat the damn thing, don't let it go to waste." She was already reaching for her second piece when her nose scrunched up at the mention of her other birthdays. "Debatable. I'd rather celebrate all the days where I'm not thinking about getting older? But, it's hard to care right now. Bacon." She chomped down, and moaned. ******** class="quote"> medigel

He sighed and opened his mouth, waiting patiently for her to find it, and then happily munched on his creation. "Older don' hafta mean bad," Dawson said. "Means you gettin' experience. N' fancy rooms like this one!" He made a gesture about them. "S'like a palace compared to yer old one, huh?"

"I liked my older one." She teased, rubbing him in the stomach with her elbow. "People knew where to find me. And it was cozy. Here, you're just going to find new places to sit or stand that aren't on my bed. What fun is that?" Of course, that hadn't actually happened, as was obvious by the fact she was curled up in his lap despite all the room there was. But she didn't mention that fact. "Experience is nice, though. I guess I'll give you that one. I guess."

He almost said something like but your bed is the comfiest, only probably worse sounding or accidentally more suggestive than he needed to be getting at this stage, but Dawson swallowed it down. "You tell people you moved, tha's it," he said, rubbing where she had elbowed him dramatically like she had actually wounded him. "Ain' a big deal. You end up needin' help movin' stuff into the place, lemme know." Dawson gazed at one of the walls for a moment, trying to think of good sequiturs. "So, uh...That mission was bonkers, huh. Sure am glad I had you n' Meri t'take out those things," he said, affectionate and proud. "I know I worry 'bout y'all a lot, s'what I do. But you were both amazin'."

The 'mission'. Her hand slowed on the bacon when he reminded her of it, and suddenly she felt every part of him that touched her, against her skin. It felt too close, too - familiar. Too much like something she'd promised herself she wouldn't yearn for, anymore. (And yet.) "Yeah," She breathed out, her voice gone extra quiet as she picked out a piece of bacon and gnawed on it nervously. "Bonkers." Her face was turning red. Good thing she was turned away from him, because she could feel it, and there was nothing she could do to calm it down.

Okay. Quiet was okay. There were probably better ways of introducing the topic, but there they were. Syn suppressed laughter and did not suppress the mental eye rolling. It was a major mood disruptor, and Dawson found himself tugging at the necklace of teeth as if the motion would make her stop. "I'm, uh, guessin' kid Meri wasn' somethin' you were ready for," he ventured gently. "S'okay. It took me some time too. I dunno why it stuck fer some've them, but, well..." He stopped fidgeting with the totem and sighed. "Is what it is."

"I was aware that some of them have turned young," Don't think about Cami, don't think about Cami, don't - "But I was avoiding it. Because I figured, everything goes back to normal eventually. Given enough time -" She sighed, long and haggard. "I really didn't want to face the truth."

"I get it. Part a'me thought the same," Dawson admitted quietly. But given how Maebe had reacted to America, maybe he couldn't begin to comprehend everything she was feeling. "Memories're so important now n' all...I got kinda, I dunno...resentful, I guess." He hesitated and then looped his arms around her again in a loose hug. "I was scared I was gonna find you the same way, y'know. N' after everythin', well...I guess I wouldn't'a blamed you."

Her arms responded automatically by looping around his neck, behind her. She laid against his body and stared, unseeing, at the wall. "I should have." She whispered. "But I don't think I was given the choice. It's like somewhere deep down, it was clear. I had something to come back to." Maybe it wasn't love. Maybe it didn't have to be, to bring her back the way others hadn't. All it needed to be was Important. He was Important.

She could feel his heart beating a little faster. "You always got a choice," Dawson said. "S'what I feel. Why else only get a few staying kids? Legacies don' care about us, they wouldn' direct who gets what personally." Then again, he was Important. Maebe had said as much before. But in that light, America...And if so, then Cami...He didn't like it. Someone Important wasn't enough. "Yer strong, Maebe Grace. You know that, right? I think you chose to go back, even if y'don' know it."

She didn't normally think she was strong. In fact, her typical mindset rested heavily on the idea that she was weak in every sense of the word. But when Dawson said it.. "Maybe." She muttered, closing her eyes. "Its not completely out of the realm of possibility, anymore."
