He felt a bit like an a**, putting Chance on the spot with such doubts. Rather than doubting himself, it sounded more like he was doubting his partner. Chance seemed perfectly assured of his own feelings, and yet Otto still felt as if he'd coerced Chance into feeling those things somehow. As if Otto had some spell or power to make people fall for him, only to find Otto running off with every doubt that befell his heart.
But that was why he had to commit. He had to stop running and stop doubting. He needed a foundation. If there was anyone Otto felt he could lean on, it was Chance. He felt like a d**k for wanting to marry him for such a shallow reason. He wanted to be head over heels and dumbstruck in love, bubbly and stupid to the point of euphoria. But what he had wasn't any of that. It was more realistic, and steady. He loved Chance, because he could be himself without worrying he would break his heart. He loved Chance because he loved that silent mystery he had about him, and the tenderness he showed, that was thankfully balanced by wit and sass.
He breathed out. He'd never figure out a perfect way to do this. He'd never manage to find the balls to plan and carry out a proper romantic proposal, because everything he thought of would have been false, and meant for a woman. The typical places and lines just didn't suit him at all.
He knew what to do. And he knew when to do it.
"Wanna go star gazing tonight?" He asked casually, if not for the nervous energy behind his blue eyes. "In the training field.. if there is still a training field.." Maybe they could scope that out now.

They were still outside, and while Chance didn't care about possible people walking by, he knew that Otto did. Not because he was embarrassed - though that was probably a smidgen of it - but mostly because he was used to being tough, used to being...well, everything that made him Otto. Being perceived as weak or soft was not in the Otto Graves handbook of things that he enjoyed.
The thought of stargazing took Chance's mind away from the curiosity at the initial question, his eyes lighting up almost immediately at the prospect of stargazing. "You, me, stargazing, and some snacks sounds like it would be an excellent date night."
He still wasn't sure about why Otto was asking him about that sort of thing in the first place, but, well...they'd just survived being trapped in a Horseman tower in some weird parallel universe where they were both Horsemen, after all. Nerves were bound to be on edge.
"Should we go see if the training field is still intact?" he asked, sounding amused.

Of course Chance had guessed right. Otto's self assured 'street cred' kept him from being too open or soft in public. Heaven forbid he break away from the grumpy, angry runt he presented himself as.
However, the prospect of this date had him settling his nerves. The two of them alone in the dark with stars as their only witness made him feel excited. He smiled finally, and gave him a nod.
"Good idea. Let's check it out." If it was messy? Well, it'd be the first place he and Chance would tidy up. For entirely selfish purposes.

The smile was enough for Chance, and privately, it made him feel like his heart had expanded two sizes, because Otto's smiles were a rare and precious thing. Smirks and sassy grins were a different story; Otto could pull those out in a heartbeat - but the open, gentle smiles were different.
"If it's completely demolished, we'll have a problem," said Chance with a melodramatic sigh as he turned away from the main building and began making his way towards the training fields, Otto at his side. "I mean, it can't be too bad. It can't have a giant rock sticking out of it, could it?"

"It could." Otto reminded easily as he strode casually beside Chance, his steps slightly quicker since Chance's stride was longer. "Or a giant tree, or a giant crystal."

"I don't think I want any of those things," said Chance with a laugh. "If It's a giant tree, at least it could give us a giant tree, then at least there might be some shade..."
He stepped over a broken branch, Chance rounding the corner that led to the wide expanse of training fields just up ahead. He could see the training dummies, a few of them knocked over, but not much from the distance they were currently at.
"Hm. Maybe we'll get off lucky for once and things will be not terrible..."

"And if the ground is uneven, well, that just makes battle training more realistic." After all, there had been many times he'd had to run or fight on bumpy terrain. It was difficult and left his legs feeling like boulders after, though.
"What's your favourite food?" Otto asked suddenly, "Or snack. Whatever. Anything edible."

"Fair point," said Chance with a laugh. He'd stuck his hands in the pockets of his jeans as he walked, the poncho swinging around merrily, though it was a little hot for the layers of clothing. "I mean, it's not like we're always going to be fighting on totally even ground."
He flashed a smile over at Otto, though the question made him blink. Chance gave a thoughtful hum, head tilted consideringly.
"Fruit," he said, after a moment. "I like fruit. And ice cream, does that count as an actual food? When I lived by myself, I ate a lot of fruit snacks, but I don't think that really counts either," he added with a laugh.

Otto found himself surprised by Chance's answer. He himself thrived off junk food and greasy diner food. Not to mention the sweets he was weak for. Who knew Chance had a much healthier preference?
"Huh.. never knew." Otto murmured. He didn't ask for specifics, since Chance hadn't offered on his own. Maybe he just liked fruit and ice cream in general.
"Pretty sure fruit snacks are 90% preservatives and 10% fruit peels."

He bumped his shoulder playfully off of Otto's as they walked. "I like coffee too, but someone here doesn't. And I like sweets, but maybe not as much as that same certain someone."
There was a teasing note to Chance's voice as they came closer to the training fields, Chance laughing. "They're nothing special, but I used to snack on them while I was working, it was one of the few things I could sort of sneak into my pocket and munch on."
He slowed to a stop in front of a rather despondent looking training dummy that was leaning limply to one side. The rest of the field, much to Chance's relief, wasn't terrible; it was a little uneven in some spots, and what looked like a tree had fallen over on one side, though it was a relatively small tree.
"Well," said Chance, surveying it all with mild interest. "Okay. Not awful. Might need a little..." He waved a hand. "Fixing up, but otherwise, not bad."

"That certain someone sounds pretty damn smart to me." Otto deadpanned with a haughty lift of his brows.
"Ain't like I can scoff yer choice in snacks. I eat nuthin' but junk. I keep Skittles and Mars bars in my work bag." In fact, he had a snack pack of Skittles in the pocket of his track pants presently.
He leaned on one leg, standing by Chance as they gazed out at the disheveled grounds. "Hmm. Good." It would do. Nothing outstanding in the way of their view later that night. And now as much as he'd rather spend his whole day at Chance's side, he had an urgent need to prepare for later. As such, he patted Chance hard on the back and turned away.
"I'd better get to helpin' around the base. Git my work done early so I don't get roped into workin' overtime tonight." His heart pounded, but he used that anxiety to fuel his purpose. "Meet me here at midnight, aight?"

"Oh, he's smart all right," Chance deadpanned right back. "A smartass."
He was grinning wildly now, a laugh escaping. "Oh believe me, I know. I'm pretty sure I found a pack of M&M's in one of your jackets the other day. And a few KitKats in the bedside table drawer, come to think of it..."
Chance reached out as Otto slanted himself away, catching his upper arm so that he could lean and press a brief and quick kiss to the side of Otto's head, lips against his temple for just a second.
"You go do that and I'll go help clean up some of the dormitories," he said, smiling as he let go. "Midnight it is."

Otto laughed, not a shred of sheepish guilt even hinted at within the mirth of it. "Might wanna double check your bedsheets too." He only wished he was joking. He'd once found a candy wrapper and a few suckers while changing the sheets once. He was reeled backward a bit as Chance planted one last surprise kiss upon him, and gave the man a cheeky look before he ventured off. Once separated, Otto took a deep breath. Steeling his willpower while relaxing his nerves, he set out to prepare for the perfect night. gaia_nitemareleft gaia_star gaia_nitemareright
He felt like an idiot. An over enthusiastic and sappy idiot. In the middle of the training field, he'd dragged the small fallen tree to form a makeshift privacy screen. In front of it was a large blanket circled with pillows. In the centre of that was a platter with fruit. Really it was just canned fruit he'd put into a bowl and mixed together, complete with peaches, cherries and pineapples. All were taken from aforementioned cans, so they had a rather overly sweet syrupy taste, creating an interesting puddle beneath them. Two bottles of booze stood beside the platter, along with a bowl of Tostitos because Otto wasn't going to be subjected to nothing but fruit all night. To make himself feel better about this mushy display of affection, Otto stuck two training dummies on opposite sides to act as guards, both dressed in heavy metal teeshirts and holding pointy training lances to ward off trespassers. He didn't have Chance's telescope, because that would involve stealing it from his room and perhaps making the curly haired man have a panic attack to find it missing. He could bring his own damned telescope. To top it off, Otto looked semi presentable. Or as presentable as he could get without going full on formal. He wore clothes that actually fit his frame, making him look slimmer instead of a baggy clothed imp. Dark coloured jeans, high end sneakers, and a v-neck black tank top with a graphic of a skull with headphones on it. He had a hoodie tied around his waist with a hint of a white belt underneath with gunmetal studs decorating it. He'd even brushed his hair, tying off the top of it into a small ponytail, allowing his earlobes to show off the multiple earrings he had. Okay. Everything was ready, he looked like he was trying too hard, and he was pretty sure this was the most embarrassed he'd ever felt in his entire life.

Chance's afternoon of tidying up his own barely touched room and then helping out various people down the hallway turned out to be relatively productive. By the time he had thrown away the last broken piece of furniture and taken a shower, it was nearing half past eleven already, which gave him just enough time to get ready.
He wasn't sure what to expect from the evening, other than a hopefully wonderful night with his boyfriend, so he dressed slightly better than usual himself. A pair of black jeans, a blue tanktop, and a very nice, very soft oversized black sweater that had large silver stars printed all across the front, Chance sitting on his bed to tie up the ankle boots before he moved over to the closet again. The telescope was leaning propped up against a corner, carefully tucked away in its case, and Chance slung the carrying strap over his shoulder, kicking the door shut with his foot as he left.
The training fields weren't that long of a walk, and it was just a little after midnight by the time Chance got there, his steps slowing as he drew closer. It took him a moment to realize just what he was seeing, because romantic gestures from Otto were so uncommon it was almost like seeing a comet or something.
His brows rose, Chance coming to a stop in front of the little area, one hand tucked into the pocket of his jeans, his other hand holding the telescope strap, Chance's lips parting in surprise before a smile touched them.
"This is nice," he said, and meant it, because it was entirely unexpected. "Wow."

Upon seeing Chance, Otto felt all anxiety dissappear. He was handsome as the devil, looking so touched and taken aback, giving Otto a gentle and sincere compliment on the layout. He no longer felt self conscience, and he gave Chance a wide, proud smile that fully reached his eyes. "You're welcome." He replied, giving a small nod. His heart felt full, and it felt warm.
"By the way. This is Stone Cold, and this is Metal Head." He pointed to the two 'guards' full of straw, war paint decorating their dishevelled faces. "I hired some bouncers to keep this a private party. Have a seat."
