“We started dating after I stopped seeing Stella. It sort of just happened.” She should have been in a panic, should have been running home, crying, feeling all sorts of things, but Kari just stood, numbly watching Epidote stealing from a corpse. It was...rather disgusting and made her feel. Well. It didn’t make her feel much of anything, other than a strong sense of curiosity of if she would ever be able to feel anything again.
“He knows all about Stella, so don’t think that’ll be news to him or anything. I don’t just keep secrets from him.”
Well. That was a lie too, she hadn’t mentioned anything about Citrine, but...but that was something she was trying to keep as far out of her mind as possible. “Do you really have to rob her while you’re at it, Epidote...I thought you had at least a little honor left in you. I guess I was wrong about a lot of things. You really are just a monster, aren’t you?”
It didn’t matter though. He was a monster and she was bound to keep meeting up with him. She had dug her hole, and this was her punishment. Nothing really mattered anymore.

Pulling out a package of gum, he slid one of the foil slices out and promptly popped the piece into his mouth. Amusement still danced across his expression as he turned to glance back at the senshi before returning to his treasure hunting.
“Monsters come in all shapes and sizes, doll.”
The wallet appeared from within her purse, bare hand pulling the designer leather open, green eyes peering inside. He knew better than to steal the cards - paper trails only lead to getting caught - but it appeared he'd hit the jackpot when three twenties were tugged out and promptly pocketed into his uniform.
“You're the one who let her die. You knew what was at stake, you ratted me out to your boytoy and s**t happened.”
Dropping the wallet back into the abandoned purse, he turned on his heels and made his way back towards the stunned looking girl.
“So. You gonna go tattle to Themisto about this too, Kari?”
His eyes narrowed, one side of his lip curling.

Of course she wasn’t going to tell him. Why would he even think that she would end up being so stupid as to telling Themisto anything that was wrong anymore. No, this was a mistake that she wouldn’t be making again any time soon...or ever again, if she could help it.
“No. I won’t tell anyone, Epi. And I’ll tell him that you’ve decided to leave me alone because he gave you such a great loss or whatever.” Kari watched him steal the money from the woman and sighed, turning away. “When do you want me next, Epidote?” This was her life now. She couldn’t let people get hurt again because she was too weak to fight her own battles and thought it would be a good idea to run off and tell someone who cared about her...but he wouldn’t have this on his conscious. Only she would.
Everything felt like this was all just a twisted nightmare. It couldn’t be real, she couldn’t just be standing here, tired as she was. Clearly this was a twisted nightmare and she would wake up any moment now to the sound of her alarm...but until that moment happened...she would just…
Deal. She would deal with it all. “Just tell me a date and a time and I’ll be there. I won’t let this happen again. I swear it.”

Gave you such a great loss or whatever.
With her back turned to him, his snarl turned into a full-fledged grimace. One hand reached out and roughly took hold of the back of her arm, yanking her backwards with the assistance of his anger.
“Let’s get this straight - I didn’t lose against your little boytoy, doll. He was an inconvenience and that was it.”
Was he being just a tad defensive? Maybe.
Was he remembering what it was like to be attacked by a ghost posse? Also maybe.
Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes and counted to ten, slowly and methodically. It wouldn’t do either of them any good for him to fly off the handle - for all he knew, Kari could simply give up and stop showing up… and then where would his free energy go?
“He doesn’t matter. You’re all that matters, Kari. Don’t you see?”
The hand that was gripping her arm loosened, rising up to brush away brown waves. “You just keep being a good little girl and we won’t worry about pesky little Themi or crushed star seeds or any of that silly nonsense, right?”
The fingers grazed her cheek as he continued to play with her hair for several minutes, humming to himself as he thought about her question. “Hmmm. Let’s try again for next week, shall we? I’ll even bring a special reward for you, if you decide to behave yourself. How does that sound?”

Kari hadn’t expected him to get violent, and for a moment she half thought about using her magic on him--she hadn’t been serious, it was just something she had said, thinking it would work to placate Themisto...she knew he had a lot of pride, and if that was appeased, well...then all would be well.
She was shaking slightly as both is grip and words softened, and she looked up at the captain, face pale, nodding mutely at his words. The caresses on her face and hair felt nice...and after the emotional roller coaster that she had been on so far tonight...she wanted the comfort.
“Next week? I’ll be here...and I’ll do my best to be on time, Epidote...I...I really am sorry that I was late...I didn’t mean to be. I’ll be good…” She’d have to be good. Otherwise, people would die...and that was the very last thing that Kari wanted to have happen.

“That’s okay, baby,” he mused softly, the ends of his mouth curling up as she murmured her apology on top of her agreeance, “We’ll just try again next week and see if you do any better.”
He released her hair and took a step back, arms folding across themselves. She looked downright pitiful and he couldn’t help but take delight in the sight. Was this what it felt like, to be a bad guy? For all the games, for all the storylines that he’d played over the years, he’d fought to triumph over evil and win the day but Epidote had never realized just how amazing it felt to create havoc and chaos instead.
Maybe being a bad guy was more fun than trying to stay good all the time.
“Be a good girl,” he cooed in her direction, giving her one last wave before he teleported his way out of the park, leaving Sailor Kari alone, save for the crushed crystals on the ground and the two lifeless forms they belonged to.
For having such a s**t evening (thanks, Themisto), it hadn’t ended as poorly as he’d imagined it would have. He made some money, crushed some starseeds and ended up looking like a badass after all.
