“Sometimes you just know things in your gut. This isn’t anything that anyone’s told me…heck, I don’t really even know anyone who knew me as Mariposite…except my old general, I guess. But he seems like he’d rather kill me than try to convince me otherwise so…that’s a dead end you know? He…”

Whisler shrugged. “Nobody’s trying to lie to me or manipulate me. I’m sure of that…and nobody’s treating me bad for what I used to be, either. I don’t think anyone mistrusts me. Not for that, anyway.”

He liked it when this lieutenant said his name. His old name. Mariposite was a nice name…and he supposed it must have suited him…but…it was done now. Over.

“All of the knights I’ve met are happy to have me on their side. Senshi are too, I’m a pretty great guy…I don’t know if you’ve noticed that or not, but I am pretty great.” Whisler flashed another smile, trying to put all of his confidence into it, but he knew it fell short…what if other knights really didn’t trust him? What if they were just…trying to make him feel better?

…Nah. That wasn’t something that was even possible. He knew that well enough.

Amesite laughed. “Yes, you do seem like a pretty great guy. Honestly, that surprises me, though—that they would just accept you so willingly. I don’t know if I could trust them. If I had purified, I mean.”

He leaned back just slightly, still close to Whisler. “If I couldn’t remember what had happened in the Negaverse…if I couldn’t remember what happened just before I side swapped?”

He chewed on his lip thoughtfully. “I mean, naturally I’d suspect foul play. I was told not to trust Knights or Senshi, but I suppose that’s the nature of war. What a weak spot though. If they know that you lose your memory before you defect, what could they get away with? Hypothetically, if they wanted you to leave the Negaverse, couldn’t they just kidnap you, abduct you, torture you—maybe even brainwash you, themselves—to trick you, force you into joining them? And you wouldn’t remember a thing.”

He contemplated and then shook his head. “War brings out the worst in people. Order, or Chaos. I’d like to get to know who you were, though. And who you are. Maybe we could be good for each other.”

“When…The memories I do still have of purifying…I was with a friend. Someone who wasn’t involved with the war at all. She was there…so I think she helped me. Helped me break free of the chains the Negaverse had on me. The chains that they’ve started to trap you with.” He idly wondered what became of Zia. He hadn’t seen or heard from her in such a long time…he hoped she was all right.

But honestly…even that felt like another lifetime ago. So many things felt like a lifetime ago.

He sighed and shook his head. “Anyway. I doubt that could happen…order…order doesn’t…doesn’t normally do things like that. And the ones who do…they’re best avoided, anyway. But um…what do you mean by good for each other, because if you intend for us to be friends, I hope you realize what you’ll be getting yourself into, Amesite. I won’t give up on you. I won’t give up until you’ve shed the darkness that surrounds you and have come to the better side of things. I won’t give up until I get to see your wonder with my own eyes…and get to see you in an outfit that’s just a little bit brighter. Who knows, perhaps you were a Polaris knight in the past two, maybe we knew each other a thousand years ago.”

Whisler shrugged and reached his hand over, brushing his fingertips over the lieutenant’s cheek. “I’m a stubborn fool, just a warning. You should just start running now, if you were smart.”

“I don’t run,” Amesite said softly, leaning into the touch. “And I don’t give up either. If there is a darkness in me, growing, I will fight it. You can help me, but I will not lose to it, or anything.” He sounded wholly convinced but added, softer, “But I’m more worried about the darkness in you. There’s something there. You can feel it, can’t you?”

He could see it in his eyes. The way he spoke. The way he moved, and seemed so desperate for contact.

“…I don’t know what it is, but you’re not hiding it as well as you think you are. I fix people, Whisler. Let me help you, too. Maybe, together, we can make things right. For both of us.”

Whisler paused, his breath catching in his throat. For a moment he wasn’t quite sure what to say and he was worried that perhaps he wasn’t controlling his feelings well enough. How could he really be expected to help guide people away from chaos if he still craved being a part of it again?

It was stupid.

This was stupid.

He managed another smile, turned it to a grin that held all the confidence that he had and laughed. “Yeah, well. If you think that’s the case, who am I to stop you from helping me. But, I can assure you, my dear…that I’m not the one in need of help with anything. You’re the one who needs saving, and if it takes me letting you help me with my issues for me to help you with yours, I’m game.”

The smile never faltered, even though the knight was feeling a terrible pain in his chest. “There’s no darkness in me. There’s no room for darkness in me. Not anymore.”

Amesite watched him with sharp eyes, reading into everything Whisler showed him. He wanted to see beyond the mask.

He wanted to know how Whisler really felt about all of this.

He smiled, though. Whisler said he would help him. He had an excuse to spend time with the Knight. To get to know him.

Whisler responded well to touch, so Amesite leaned close to him when he said, “You, Whisler, are a liar. And I will make an honest man of you, yet.”

It was lighthearted, a joke.

But it was a promise, too.
