‘Aegir certainly adores you.’ Dear, foolish, beautiful dancer. Little enough company in my life has there been, if not for the regularity of his invitations to draw, and our late dinners. He puts up well with our differences. “I should be very lost without you, Aegir or Faust."

“Many of us would be. You do a great deal with the technology available to us all. I’ll draft some ideas down, and send them over, on things that could be added. “

With cat successfully loafed, Quenton rested long fingers against the silky outside chop, and supporting her weight. Her’s was a strange question, and panged in hollows of breast against what should be stone and not bone for want and wish. There were other meanings to ‘partner’, but not the one she meant. “Trustworthy in that they will not casually make exceptions to all, yea, even their own ideals. Rational. Confident. Battle skill is a thing of practice, and ideals need not match as long as we can refer between us all to the second, rationality, and work out our priorities. “

How I once thought to find a team of such people, and a leader that I could support with any acumen given me by any star. Or God. Or whatever people like to call on for more than dumb chance. But there was interest in the tidbits and focus on her, and her relationship with Aegir and the team he was a part of, “Do you get on well with Tribble, then?”

His words stroked her ever inflated ego and she fairly puffed in his lap with it, eyes squinted in pleasure and her chin lifted.

Trustworthy. Rational. Confident. They weren't bad qualities to ask for, but were perhaps a bit nebulous and open to interpretation... could she accurately judge someone rational the way Quenton would judge them? It would be unfortunate, and embarrassing, to put someone forward and have them not measure up. Ash's purr rattled through her chest as she pondered it, tucking the list of details carefully away.

The squinted eyes opened and the bridge of her nose wrinkled for a moment before smoothing again.

"Tribble is just a cat, so its no great trouble to get along with, really. Put on the right body language, respect boundaries, and before long she's washing my ears for me." She said with a breezy nonchalance. He didn't need to know about the pictures Colin had taken of the pair of them curled up like a yin yang or playing swat-around-the-door. It was just a bit embarrassing to be caught out like that... acting as though she were really just a cat and not a fantastically advanced alien being. At least, when she wasn't specifically acting.

"Tribble also can't get into some of the places I can, so its decently easy to evade her if I like. Or get us treats. She seems to appreciate my skills in that area, even with paws. I wish I could spend more time in human form outside of HQ... there is a lot that it makes it easier to do, and a lot I can't do on my own without it. Like help you at the cafe for example! It would be fun to wear one of those little frilly dresses and carry a tray. Nyah!" Ash crooned as she untucked a paw long enough to waved it in demonstration. She'd watched enough anime to know how one acted at a cafe, she was pretty sure, and it only made sense that with ears and a tail, she play a nekomimi while doing it.

Ash brightened suddenly, tilting her head back up at Quenton with such a beseeching look of hope...

"If you could get Faust or one of the other cats to cover me while I do it, I could totally waitress at the catfe for a few hours!" She said. "I promise I would be the most lovely and wonderful waitress too."

Large, green eyes blinked at him, shining with the sudden, magnificent idea of playing human for him.

Listening to her evaluation of her relationship with the mere cat was delightful, and Quenton tried to make a mental note to himself to ask Colin for any already existing pictures he’d taken of the two, as well as to beg he get as many more as possible. It was certain to be terribly cute. The gaze of imploring green, couched in soft silvers and whites, was also adorable.

“A chance to practice being bipedal, interacting with the native species on bipedal terms, would be a good opportunity. That’s a good idea, Ash. It’s really the logistics of covering the signatures in rotation that will be the key, since it’s exhausting at length. But hour rotation, and a four hour maid/butler cafe special could provide four shifts and the excuse. I’ll see if I can get ahold of the Asian Studies Department at the University. They’d probably be willing to help sponsor something and inform me about pop culture specifics as far as food, decor and customs...uniforms…”

“Would you be willing to source around the HQ and see if some of the other cats would be willing to come help out? Even if they can’t take on bipedal shape, it’s good practice for covering aura’s, and increasing their stamina for that, all the more since it isn’t live combat where the stress of the situation could make for costly mistakes. And if there could be two cats covering during each hour, if any one cat was inexperienced, and faltered, the other’s presence makes sure there won’t be a aura breach to draw attention and blow cover. “ Reasoning it out, it really was a good idea. There’d been plenty of Senshi and Knight based practices and bootcamps. Even when Mauvians were present to those, however, nothing had focussed so specifically on making sure that the Guardians were used to making use of their various skills. The strange dreams of portent had shown a world where those skills and Mauvians, from Kitten to Aged, had been indispensable.

“Let’s pursue it. In all seriousness. There’s a charity event already planned for this summer, around Independence Day, but a Maid/Butler Cafe would be perfect for the Winter-into-Spring weather, since it would focus on indoor settings. “

Part of her had been expecting him to turn her down, gently, or something. When he didn't, but went on to take her idea and expound upon it, a light grew in her eyes till they shone and joy radiated from her round little face, lit up with excitement.

Quenton thought her silly idea wasn't silly, but a good idea! She felt like she'd won the lottery by accident, and it was delightful. Her purr rattled through her throat, practically vibrating all of her little form and Ash turned her thoughts from the surprise to the logistics he was offering, applying her analytical mind to them.

"I would not be against taking a turn covering in payment for getting a chance to play human." She offered graciously. Last time she had just let Snowball do all the work while she had all the fun, but he'd been happy to do it. She could be a team player, though, and the Burmilla liked to think she was one of the more experienced at it, offering a store of knowledge to help the others.

The idea of making a whole day of it, and bringing in others, was such a delightful one... it meant she wasn't going to get the spotlight all to herself, but there was something fun about a group event. A group event she curated, with Quenton's help, of course. A nice feather in her cap.

"I'll do that. I can put out a call, see who's interested in practicing energy dampening. Do you want to pick a date that would be convenient for you? And do you think it would be a good idea to put the word out to senshi and what not, if they wanted to patron the cafe that day? I'm certainly not against regular customers, of course, and I know you have reservations to honor."

Colin for sure needed to come, and during Ash's shift preferably. Nadia too. Possibly others, but if they weren't careful they could end up with a shop full of order people in civ clothes. It could be safer, but it could also be less of a true test.

“You’ve been a Guardian a long time now, and it may be unavoidable that if some newer, or kitten, Mauvians will need you to spell them or teach them in it. I think it could be interesting to ….invite senshi in their civilian guise. It would be a thing of joy and perhaps introduce them more to the place and to the VIP system and availability of their free drinks and food if they need it. I can’t gauge interest. “ The young senshi at the inception meeting for the Blackwatch had been volatile, idealistic, possibly polar to himself. There’d been no follow up, so it was hard to gauge more than the impression and indignation on matters of soldiers, duty, age, and the like. If there were problems to be had from giving the Mauvians their own training day, he couldn’t pretend to fully predict them.

“If…it were all senshi, then there’d be no risks of truly adverse trouble with civilian discovery or enemy infiltration directly at the cafe. That could be quite workable? All senshi and all knights in the reservations. Then the only risk would be aura lapses to outside trackers, youma and officers and the Mirror. If there is a reserve Mauvian that is experienced with aura covering always on duty, then that wouldn’t be a trouble either. What do you think of that aspect? I wonder if we could work a game of it in rotating one or two regular senshi or knights with ears and tails on the service staff. Then the guests could try to guess who were the Mauvian servers and who were the Human. “

“Dates ..." It did require deeper thought than just winter/spring seasonal generalities. Time to reach cats, reach senshi, reach knights, RSVP, try to arrange for supplies and any tech. Uniforms, which weren't optional, because the cuteness was an absolute necessity. "March would probably still be cold for any hope of outdoors, for space. Unless the end of March. Or Early April? Flowers are very bright then, and days are sunny and temperate. It could be in the roof garden instead of crammed into the little fore-section of the Cafe."

"Sprays of Forget-Me-Nots would be cute at your ears.” A sculptor’s roughened pointer finger light scritched just below one silver ear in musing.

Ash made a sound that could only be called an excited squeal as the young man tickled her ears, her tucked back end wiggling with the press and lift of her tiny paws. Such an exciting prospect! It showed in the flicking of her tail back and forth, sleek and striped.

"Yes, April! That's a bit from now, but no matter. I like the idea of outside areas and flowers!" She said as she angled her head to push her cheek against his fingers, rubbing the corner of her mouth into him as her purr rumbled. "All these are good ideas! I'll have to tag Snowball to help out, he might, unfortunately, be the most senior cat I know right now that might be available to supervise. Mmm... maybe I can send a note to Liryn as well. No matter, I will figure it out! We can narrow down the date when we have a better idea of who wants to attend."

Rising up, the silver cat turned in place and plopped herself down, tucking the curve of her body into his lap so her spine rested on his stomach. It was something of a comical position, bellow exposed and back paws curled up, but it left her free to touch the earpiece of her visor and call up the holographic screen. Sitting like this, Quenton could see it too and the document she started. Into it she laid out everything that had been mentioned, plus extrapolated a couple of points that she could need to follow up on.

They'd need a list of who was attending, cat wise, unless they took note at the door, and an 'official' invite to other senshi and knights would need to be sent... She marked the things she knew she needed to do with a little cat emoji, while those Quenton would do got a flower. Food and drink and decorations would be his area for sure, but there was lots for both of them to do.

"Why Forget-me-nots?" She asked suddenly, her paws... pausing. She tilted her head back to blink up at him, the end of her tail curling with a dainty motion. "And does this mean you'll wear ears and tail too?"

She had not forgotten the pair she had gifted him, by any means.

Her seated curl was adorable, and it worked well for keeping an eye on the tiny visor with it’s miniscule letters. Thankfully he was young and early enough in graduate studies as to not have squandered his vision yet. It was a surprise that the HUD was in English, rather than some incomprehensible xenolinguistic. Some part of him had expected Mauvian, perhaps. She and the others he’d met all grew up on Earth, in the United States, and perhaps with native English Speakers as primary informants to language. Though….Faust had been a gift from Alois, and seemed none the more experienced in understanding German than any other cat. Vergissmeinnicht…

“No singular reason. Flowers they are, which many find fair to adorn as nature’s jewels the bodies given us. Bouquet and bed of many different shades of blue clusters, “ And here he touched light fingers around her face and fur where colors or her bipedal image might wear the corresponding shade, “Pink, purple, and clean white of exceeding delicacy and petite size. Traits of some familiarity?”

“Their symbolism to poem and song is for loyalty, fidelity, affection and even love. Each blossom is a favored memory, despite separation of time, place, or spirit. They are mythical, sublime, beloved across centuries and oceans, from Newfoundland’s soldiers fallen to King Henry IV in exile in the 14th Century. The playful irony, maybe, to adorn a cat with a flower called ‘mouse's ear’ from the Greek.”

Fridiles auga, the eye of the beloved. They were never blue, but gold. As with Faust’s. And hers are Green, as with Aegir. Never white, pink, purple or blue. I wonder if that will be some sort of omen.

His words had trailed off, gaze and mind partially distracted to the distance while his hand somehow still managed to luxuriate in gentle rufflings of her fur. Rogue-mind caught up to the rest again and tried to inject more present warmth into his voice than saudade. She was here, present on his lap in too-rare delight, and it would be a sorrow not to ensure that the treasure of that was related through action and attentiveness. “It could be thus. I have them safe in case I made. They’ve had some wearings since, though only ‘about the house.’ The Mechanical Tail Company in the UK that makes servo-moving tails...I wonder how much noise they make? “

Ash wriggled as he stroked the sides of her head with his long fingers, ruffling the short fur where her clusters of curls would sit. They would look quite nice with flowers tucked into them... like little bouquets. How amusing.

Her eyes slitted happily at his attentions and she left off her typing, the bulk of it containing what she needed.

"You know a lot about flowers, my clever boy. I think they are a good match, when you put it like that. I'm flattered that you'd pick them out for me." Ash hummed as she let herself relax, her paws curled and only the tip of her tail twitching lazily. The mauvian was inclined to drift right off, being cuddled like this. Quenton was ever attentive and anticipated every whim she might have... a perfect companion, if ever there was one. If it hadn't been for that ruffian he associated himself with... but no matter. She knew how to share, when it suited her.

"Hmm?" She stirred after a moment, drawing her mind back from where it drifted. "The shippo tail you mean? I like the concept, but cat's don't wag... Neurowear got that a little off. ThinkGeek did a twitchy tail that moves much nicer, more realistic, but its not brainwave controlled, sadly, and reviews say its quite loud. HOWEVER."

She tilted her head back go cat-grin at him, looking sly and pleased with herself.

"I think I could improve on it. I did study the ears I gave you, and I can work up something to properly interact with it that doesn't look like its better suited to a dog. You would wear it then, if I did? I would happily do that for you. Very happily. I could even make adjustments to the nekomini so you don't have that obvious sensor on your forehead."

It had been a December. No, he’d walked into a florist’s with a shop keeper who’s hair was like oil-slick over ebony. Dhawan. Bluebells, Crown Vetch and Nasturtium. But Spring had not come, nor would, for that romance where the language of flowers had been needful to his mind and researched. Camellias had substituted in fare-well-wishes. Alexandre Evans. Perhaps the other was near or graduated with his bachelors, by now. It had been three and a half years. It did not feel clever, but remained in his memory as might where any brain tied the facts and symbolism off to tens of still lives in art history, to the illustrative posters of the Art Nouveau period

“If you can make adjustments to ears and tails with Mautech, so that they’re not so obvious with belts or headbands and natural movements, then I’ll work with silicon and flocking to make more realistic parts. It won’t be so far off from the work I’ve done for Halloween commissions. Or cosplay lapidary. Before we get too far along, though- “

More than enough minutes had passed since their retreat, and he’d offered both drink and ganache sable in tribute to the Mauvian’s sweet-tooth. Carefully and reluctantly he lifted her to set her comfortably on the seating while he stood, “I still owe you that refreshment. What flavors can I tempt you with?”

The Burmilla was lazily limp as Quenton lifted her up, depositing her carefully back in the warmth his body left behind. When his fingers released, she stretched luxuriously, the toes of all her paws spread to really reach for that delicious feeling of muscles at their max. With it came a powerful yawn to display tiny white teeth, and then she was limp again, spread like a soft, furry puddle across the seat.

He caught her attention, though, with the offer of something consumable. Hungry or not, sweets were never something to be turned away.

"Ooo?" She hummed as she twisted about, head upside down while her hinds flopped to the side and her paws curled against her chest. "Something chocolatey maybe? Mmm... or strawberry. Or both. Or caramel! I am easy to please, you know."

There were plans to be made, of course, but that was enough for now. She had tasks to complete later, the rest of the visit could be spent relaxing and enjoying the delightful product of Quenton's hands. Sometimes she wondered, why a man with such a sharp, clever mind would settle for running a cafe, but she certainly couldn't argue with the benefit she got from it. As long as he was happy, she figured, she wouldn't have to feel too bad about reaping the rewards.

Ash was definitely looking forward to April.
