???

The attack had been swift. The aftermath far-reaching. But no one could have predicted the events that followed ... not even a lone redheaded teen who had seen what had transpired but was too late to act. Even being blessed with magical powers had no effect and watching as a negaverse agent ripped the starseeds from her unsuspecting victims and laughed while doing so was a sight that Izobel would want to forget. The victims unfortunately would make it so that it was impossible to do so as they were her parents.
---
It had been a normal night in her eyes. She had taken to a late night patrol knowing that her parents were out and would not question her leaving the house so it was a win-win situation for the senshi of bandages. She tried to keep to herself while strolling amongst the skyline of Destiny City and often she would stop and take little rests to stare down at the cit night life. She had been entrusted with protecting the citizens but really what good did it do? A good chunk of the population still saw the senshi as terrorists. As if! If only they really knew. Lacerta was not one to go around changing peoples minds as she had weightier things on her mind. But as she continued on the route that she had mapped out in advance the stillness of the night was pierced by screams of terror.

Her whole body was on edge. Those screams sounded familiar. Too familiar. Achingly familiar. Her feet instinctively carried her in the direction the screams had come from. An area central to the entertainment section of the city seemed to be Lacerta's destination and her heart nearly burst from her chest in fear. It had been the destination of her parents night out and even now she mentally refused to add two and two together ... but as she glanced down into an alleyway (staying low enough not to be seen) her fears were solidified. Her father was trying to hold his own against a uniformed female but even Izobel could see that the match was uneven. Her mother wasn't seen at first and even as she scanned the alley Lacerta was hoping that maybe it was her mother screaming as she ran for help. That hope was dashed though as she picked out a still form on the ground. It appeared as if her mother had already been attacked. Was it her screams of terror that she had heard? What had happened here? Knowing that her presence was already announced by her energy signature Lacerta chose to remain where she was. She'd be no help to her parents if she came under attack. It was her hope that just by announcing her presence in the area would be enough to scare the agent off but the senshi wasn't sure. Maybe then she would be able to offer assistance to her folks. They wouldn't know it was her but it was the best she could do. She could mend the most serious of injuries and then get everyone to safety. But as she watched her dad slump over Lacerta knew that the time to act might have already been lost to her. Hearing laughter from below Lacerta glanced down to see the oddest thing. The uniformed woman had stuck her hand into her father's chest and after a few seconds removed a glittering crystal from within. That accomplished the motion was then repeated on her mother with the same results. Curiosity had Lacerta reaching for the nearest ladder as the uniformed woman took off for parts unknown. What had she done? What had she stolen from her parents?

The growing unease that came with the situation at hand only intensified when Lacerta reached her parents. Neither had moved since the woman had taken off and although she was keen to try and follow Lacerta knew that at this particular moment her parents safety was top priority: and that meant getting them help as soon as possible. Would her healing magic work if she tried using it? Reaching over Lacerta placed a hand over her dad's chest and activated her strongest magic but as she watched the bandage fade after with no apparent difference taking place she knew that professional help was needed. Digging her regular phone out Lacerta winced before powering down. She had never thought that she would ever have to make this call but with fingers that began to tremble the teen dialled 911.

Before the call connected Izobel whispered softly into the now silent night. Her voice shook with a wavering quiver, "Mom, dad?"

Getting no response Izobel felt uncertainty claw a huge hole deep inside. What had she seen? What had been done to her parents? Was this on her? For being a senshi? Was it all just a coincidence or something more sinister? Hadn't Acubens once said that her family had been in danger because she had been a senshi? Izobel was certain it was something along those lines but even as tears threatened to fall the redhead couldn't be sure of anything.

Even as sirens began to register to Izobel's hearing her gaze was still locked onto the still forms of her parents. Help was coming ... it would be there soon and things would eventually go back to normal, right?

Mentally crafting a story that she could tell to the emergency personnel that had been summoned with her phone call kept Izobel busy enough as strobe lights began to illuminate the alley and perhaps the easiest story was that she'd been given a chance to hide before her parents were set upon by an unknown assailant. It would have to do and hopefully be believed. She'd not get a second chance to relay the tale and so it was best to keep the facts straight. She had been out with her parents all along and they'd been attacked as they walked. It would have to suffice. Her gaze swept the alleyway before spotting those that were first to respond and with a heaviness that even surprised her began to explain what had happened.

A "Not So Normal" Routine

It was the steady beeping of the machines that woke Izobel from her restless sleep. Although the hospital frowned on visitors staying past the allotted hours meant for visiting somehow someone must have pulled strings in which saw the teen being able to stay at her parents' sides for longer than normal. A portable cot had been moved into the room that was now home to her unresponsive mother and father. Since their admittance to the hospital Izobel had been a common and steady sight within the room's four walls. It was an eerie sensation to realize that just days ago her parents had both been full of life and excited for their trip out on the town and now they were reduced to relying on a ventilator and other machines to keep them alive. Shaking out cramped limbs that had begun to protest her sudden movement Izobel sat upright on the cot and glanced to the machines in question. She knew that the devices were keeping alive those that she cared for the most but seeing them beeping away with a quiet intensity brought a melancholic feeling to wash over her.

After what had seemed like a lifetime, but was in reality only three days of passing, the redhead had learned enough of what the various readouts on the screen meant and a heavy sigh was released as Izobel realized that nothing had essentially changed. Her eyes scanned the room before she pushed off from the cot. Rumpled sheets aside and the sight of a small suitcase propped upright in the corner spoke of the length of the currently stay she was experiencing. Izobel did not want to be anywhere else in case things changed - hopefully for the best - but Izzy had heard the nurses chatter and snippets of conversation had been caught here and there: mostly when staff thought she was asleep. It was downright depressing to hear comments that painted a grim reality. If things did not turn around and start improving with her folks then there was a chance that neither would make it through the week. Izzy had been trying her hardest to get out to patrol and search for the woman she had seen the night of the attack but her search had turned up no results, only more questions. She had even asked those questions that had been on her mind during a recent encounter she had had the night prior. No desirable results had been yielded from the questions asked but Izobel had learned just how useful that ring she had received really was. And the earrings that she had found as well. But the truth of the matter was that Izobel was starting to have doubts that things could ever go back to normal. If she couldn't find that agent then what hope did her mom and dad have?

Unbidden Izobel felt tears drip down her face and she angrily swiped at them. Her carefully crafted life was beginning to unravel. The questions that she was starting to hear, which came from a place of fear, were beginning to get louder and louder. How much longer could she go on with attempting to ignore them?

All she cared about was being able to go home and resume a normal life but her parents needed to be with her for that to happen and so far it looked like normalcy was a long ways away.

Times: They are Changing

Perhaps it was the wrong time to have stepped out for a bite to eat. Izobel had relinquished the cot in her parents room with the assurance of a passing intern that although the status remained unchanged with her parents that both were still considered in stable condition. It was with that update that Izzy had decided to step out and grab something to eat as well as some fresh air. The fresh air had done wonders but so too had the meal she'd consumed at a little cafe that she had found. Feeling more like herself than she had in the past ten days the redhead took her time in returning to the hospital. It was to some surprise that Izobel found herself seated along the ridge of a local fountain as she watched the water ripple as it flowed from the center outward. She wanted to believe that things would be okay but her heart was wavering. Ripples of doubt had begun to spread outward even as she tried to suppress them. It was too much to handle. Izobel was only going on seventeen years of age. There were cases in the media that spoke of kids losing one parent and managing alright. Even those that had been unlucky to lose both still fared with satisfactorily results but that was because they had other family to fall back on. Izobel had no one left. Her grandmother had been her only remaining relative but she had passed away years ago.

If her parents didn't make it - what would happen? Would she become a ward of the state? Izobel shook her head. It did not bode well to dwell on such thoughts. Rising to her feet the teen sighed before dipping her hands into the water and bringing it up to her face. Glancing at the distorted image of her own face Izobel splashed her face with the liquid before turning to head back to the hospital. Her thoughts were still chaotic. She just needed time to reflect and perhaps she'd get some in the quiet atmosphere of her parents room. The fact was she was starting to find the ambient sounds of the machines reassuring. It was odd but as long as the rhythmic beeping still pulsed in regular intervals it assured Izobel that nothing had changed - that things were still the same as the moment before.

Entering the hallways of the floor in which her parents resided on Izobel was struck suddenly by a nurse rushing by her. Considering that her parents where on the floor that housed the ICU Izobel assumed that there was an emergency and so she took no offense when the woman offered no apology but continued on her way. It was then, in that moment that she was picking herself up off the floor, that Izobel noticed the flashing blue light outside the door to her parents room and the flurry of motion as staff rushed in and out of the room that her folks resided in. Sound rushed back in and Izobel could hear the sound system calling out 'code blue.'

Backing away but pressing her back flat against the wall beside the elevator Izobel watched in silence as personnel moved in and out of the room before the sounds dimmed around her. Her heart beat madly under her breast and she found herself frozen to the spot - unable to look away from the sight of so many people. Swallowing became difficult and it felt like she wasn't able to breathe. Her gaze caught the flashing blue light above the doorway as it suddenly dimmed and went out. Was it only a false alarm then? Hope flared deep inside before Izobel caught sight of the staff that were exiting her parents room and the posture that she read didn't speak of any sort of success. Her heart sank. Pressing her palms hard against the surface of the wall that she was pressed back against Izobel could feel her world crumbling. It was over. She didn't need to be a psychologist to read the body language of the lead doctor. A moment in time in which she'd made a decision to step away and she was now paying the price. Her feet were frozen and just as one nurse glanced up and locked eyes on Izzy the redhead broke free of the paralysis that had kept her rooted in place. Slapping the button to open the elevator doors the teen could feel tears welling up and she hastily swiped at them before hitting the button for a random floor. Which number it was she couldn't even begin to make out. She needed to get home. Yes, home. She would go home and her parents would be waiting for her there.

As soon as the doors opened the redhead took to the empty hallway in which she found herself at a dead sprint. She'd get out of the building and go home. She'd be okay. Things would be okay...they just had to be.

The tears made it hard to make out which direction she was sprinting in but soon Izobel felt the burn in her lungs and she forced herself to stop the frantic pace in which she had been running at. Taking in heaving gulps of air the teen glanced at her surroundings before giving herself a moment in which she put her hand to her heart in order to feel the rapid beat. Taking a series of slow, deep breaths Izobel felt the beat of her heart slow before she recognized where exactly she was. Pushing the thoughts of what she'd witnessed lest she feel the resurgence of fear Izobel took one more steadying breath before compelling herself to move forward at a more sedate pace. There was no rush to get home. Reality had momentarily reasserted itself in Izobel's mind and she choked back a sob before pushing onward. She found no reason to hurry home. No one would be waiting for her there. No one.

Falling Down, Stumbling & Rising Back Up

Perhaps it was the simple act of noticing that mail had been piling up in her absence that really delivered the stark contrast of the life she was now living. Having left everything that she had brought to the hospital to stay close to her parents it meant that she'd need to find something else to haul away from the place that she had called home for so very long. And now she couldn't wait to distance herself from that illusion that things would be returning to normal any time soon. That reality was long gone. Her parents were not going to return and now she had to figure out just exactly how she was going to manage to survive the next few hours; heck even the next few minutes were going to be unbearable for the teen. How did one simply cope with having lost both of those that she had looked up to all her life. Sure, at times there were fights, but Izobel had loved her parents with all that she was. Almost as that phantom thought rocketed through her mind did the teen finally feel the dam break. Tears could no longer be held back and even as she rushed to let open the door so she could find refuge inside she could feel the agony threatening to rip her apart. The quiet click of the lock turning, preventing anyone from following her inside, was like a gunshot in the silence and with it did Izobel finally crumple to the ground. She had been fighting a losing battle and now it was time to just let the facts sink in. There was no way that she could fight back the waves of emotion that rose and fell in waves, threatening to drown the redhead. The passage of time continued to move forward and it took much longer than expected for even the simplest reasoning to break through the grief that surrounded Izobel. But in a moment in which she had managed to pull herself into a sitting position did her stomach alert her to the fact that she needed to eat and while still visibly upset did she manage to stand up and move robot-like to the kitchen. Finding the simplest solution in a bowl of cereal did Izobel begin to realize that things wouldn't be the same ever again. That brought another wave of sadness to wash over her but she tamped the distress she was feeling down before finishing the small meal and placing her bowl in the sink. She'd not bother with cleaning up after herself as she was beginning to realize what it was that she had to do next. It was one thing to try and hide-out for a few days in the house but the fact of the matter was that she wasn't sure that she had that kind of time remaining. With the passing of her folks she wasn't sure if authorities would be notified about the change in her status to that of an orphan. It wouldn't do well to be found here but where else could she run off too. She couldn't just run off to live on the street - that wouldn't work for her at all. And yet even as she shivered at the thought that it might have to be like that for a bit that Izobel remembered that there possibly was a place of refuge that she could turn to.

She wasn't sure if just dropping by unannounced would go over well with Acubens but what other choice did she have? Quickly making her way back to the refuge that was her bedroom Izobel scanned her surroundings before sighing. Her movements were slow and it was all so tempting to lie down on her bed and let sleep wash over her. Maybe she'd wake later and discover it'd have been all a bad dream. As tempting as the idea was though Izobel knew there was no amount of sleep that could "fix" things. It took almost all of the courage she possessed to pull a spare suitcase from underneath her bed and throw it open. From there the teen began to stuff the necessities that one needed to run away. The suitcase at first mocked her with the haphazard job she was making of packing. A shirt here, a pair of jeans there. Random objects being tossed hither and thither before she looked closely at the mess she was making. Stopping her frantic pace Izobel went to the suitcase and began trying to mentally catalog what she had decided to bring. She frowned before straightening things out. Figuring that she would need at least a few changes of outfits had Izzy repacking the suitcase with the bare essentials that she believed she would need. Fighting back another bout of tears Izobel finished by throwing a bag full of toiletries into the open suitcase before going to her beside drawer. Withdrawing all the objects within the teen placed each object reverently on the pile of clothes before pocketing her henshin pen and her "space-found" ring on her person. There was no way she was leaving those unattended in a suitcase. Feeling guilty over her next move Izobel moved listlessly into her parents room and began searching for any cash that was just lying around. Anything she could find would be added to her meager amount of cash. She did have money in the bank but it wouldn't last her that long if she couldn't find a place to go...

Even as she found the cash her parents kept for those rainy days did guilt want to raise up and swallow her. Izobel wrestled with the decision before pocketing the money. In her mind she figured her parents wouldn't mind the theft. Better stealing from them than from a stranger. Feeling like the walls were closing in with every passing second did Izobel find herself outside in her special area. Her beehive still was shuttered, waiting for the arrival of true spring, and Izobel ran her fingers over the top of box before resting her hand against the warming wood. She couldn't just leave them and yet was she really prepared to carry the hive all the way to the place she was thinking of. In short she supposed she would have to. Or find a way to get the hive mobile. The teen felt that she owed the bees and thus she promised them that she'd find them a new place to thrive - hopefully.

She would have to emulate their example with the coming of spring. She'd have to shake off the sorrow that continued to break free of the mental prison she'd attempted to push it down into. Izobel needed to be smart now. Making rash decisions wouldn't serve her well. She knew where she was now going and was going to make this work. With a sigh the teen turned away from her beehive before returning inside to finalize her packing. Finding her wallet Izobel threw on her coat before throwing her wallet into an inside pocket. She had about three hundred dollars tucked away and it would have to do for now. There wasn't much else she could do here. Pausing the teen glanced at the interior of the house before running into the living room and grabbing a picture from inside a display before dashing back into her room and neatly tucking the framed image safely into the suitcase. With other necessities tucked into pockets Izobel turned around in a three-sixty circle attempting to figure out if there was anything else inside that needed to be grabbed. Finding that nothing else screamed out for "rescuing" did Izobel grab the handle of her suitcase and extend the device in order to make transporting things easier.

Adjusting to the weight of her packed objects Izobel gamely tugged her suitcase off her bed before touring the house one last time. The tears she thought she had managed to quell returned full force and even as they flowed freely down her face Izobel made no effort to wipe them away. She'd never return to this place again and expect any sort of normalcy. That had been ripped away from her just like whatever had been ripped from the chests of her mom and dad. They were now gone and nothing was going to change that fact. Now she had just one path that lay in front of her and she was going to have to be strong enough to push through the mental anguish in order to proceed. She needed now to get to the one place that promised safety in uncertain times. She needed Acubens. Izobel knew where to find the Velociraptor senshi. It was just that she hoped that dropping by without warning would be kosher. She needed to leave this home in order to find her new home. Pulling her suitcase behind her Izobel grabbed her keys and proceeded to exit the house and locked the door behind her. It wouldn't take long for someone to realize that the home was empty ... or maybe it would take time and Izobel could return for objects that she couldn't cart away at the moment without raising more suspicion than a suitcase was bound to bring her.

The best idea would to raise a cab but that would eat away at the meager amount of on-hand cash she needed to save. So it would be local transit. She still had a functioning pass for the month and so Izobel forced herself to slow her frantic pace in order to appear nonchalant. Finding a stop nearby Izzy reclined on the bench and daydreamed for a few minutes. As her mind wandered the connection of another night and another bus stop bench grew stronger and even as she pushed down the thought that this night was similar to the one in which Mel had found and awoken her into the war between senshi and the negaverse. And yet there were also major differences. She wasn't returning home this time and a suitcase was a stark difference to a bag full of golf clubs. There was also no youma threatening her but even if one were to show up she wasn't as helpless as she had once been. She'd grown into her role as a senshi but she'd found herself floundering at the best of times. Only when had she met Acubens had things seemed much easier. Acubens had been there for her on multiple occasions and she cherished the bond that she had made with the dark mirror senshi. Izobel knew what she wanted to do and perhaps the time had come at last but first things first.

Even as lights appeared on the horizon did Izobel stand and proceed to near the curbside. The bus was running early for a change and boarding with a quiet "good evening" to the driver did the teen sit in the first available seat and push another up in order to stow her suitcase as close as she could to her side. Keeping one hand on the handle the redhead cast her gaze around the interior of the bus before settling her gaze on the scenery that was flashing by. Allowing the smallest yawn to escape her the teen fought her own instincts to rest her eyes for even a brief minute. If she were to let down her guard chaos would probably ensue. The hand that was not employing a death grip on her suitcase pressed deep into her jean-clad thigh with a pressure that was just hard enough to stop her from giving into the need for sleep. She would sleep when she deemed it safe to do so and a later than normal expedition by public transit was not the right time. Even as she realized that her stop was soon approaching did Izzy continue to fight with herself to stay awake. This night was not quite over yet and there was at least one more thing she needed to do before she could possibly relax. A safe place needed to be found and though Izobel suspected that the person she wished to see at the destination of her choice would be glad to see her ... there was an undercurrent of uncertainty. But she'd made up her mind and it was time to see this through to the very end - no matter what the outcome may be.
