“I won’t let anyone hurt Evan.” She was sure of that fact, more sure of that fact than she was about anything else. She had worked far too long and far too hard to help him. There was no way she would let him get back into the situation he had been in. Death first.
Releasing his hand, Bellite nodded. “I’m fine with that. I’ll write him a letter...Writing letters is a lost art, after all. You know...if you want him to get better...perhaps you could get him some books? If he’s afraid to leave the house...he can at least travel in his imagination. It would provide him something else to think about rather than the darkness…” She hesitated only for a moment. “And perhaps you could get him to the library one day. Libraries are a dying art too, I hope you know. And I do hope you are a supporter of libraries. That would make me very happy, at any rate.”
She snorted at his hope to be better than her new general, and she shook her head, unable to stop from grinning. “Still as full of yourself as always...I’m glad to see that changed...and I hope you’re happy, Michel, I really, truly do...I hope this all works out for you…”

Relief flooded through Michel when she said she wouldn’t let anyone hurt Evan; she certainly sounded like she meant it, and if she really had worked so hard to fix Evan, he hoped she wasn’t just playing on his weakness. “Hey, I’m still me. The only thing that changed is that I don’t have this cloud in my head anymore. Doesn’t feel like some monster’s breathing down my neck. And I have to say…it’s nice to be able to sleep at night. I tell you what—you meet me here again, same time, same place, next week. I’ll try to get Evan to a library before then, but…maybe you wanna pick out some books for him? I haven’t exactly spent much time reading recently, but…anything’s better than him watching Titanic on repeat. I’ll have a letter for you, from him—and you can tell me what you think of your new General, and what I have to do to convince you that this,” he gestured to his Knight outfit, “Is better than that,” he gestured to hers. “…I think, I missed you.” He might not have remembered her, but it was natural to talk with her. Easy, in a way he didn’t think it should have been—when talking to an agent, at least. It made him worry that maybe there was some darkness still in him—but then, he thought of Cambria, and Evan (and sort of Malcolm) and thought, maybe there wasn’t darkness in him, but light in Bellite. “And I’ll do what I can to make things up to you. Even if it means I have to drag Evan out in public—at least it’s for a good cause.”

Bellite gave a smile, nodding. “That sounds wonderful. I’ll see you here, and I’ll have a whole bunch of books for him. I’ll pick out really nice ones, I promise...Thank you, Michel. I’m glad to know you’re okay...and he’s okay...and...and everything will be okay. And I promise I won’t like my new General more than you.”
She grinned now, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. “I hope to meet him soon, I really, really do. I want to hug him and just...see him happy. I’ll pick out all the books I can to make him happy.”
Drawing in a deep breath, Bellite nodded. “All right then. See you in a week, Michel. Take care, please.”
She turned and left, wanting to say another hundred million things, but unable to put everything into words. Right now she had to meet her new general...and really think about her stance in the Negaverse...and if it was worth it to remain as Bellite. Perhaps she would do better...as a knight. Like her old general...at least then she would be able to see Evan more. That would be nice.
