It seemed, as Damissan became aware immediately, that Xilarn was awake. Not necessarily unexpected, but not a given either, and pleasing regardless.

A smile tugged at his lips at contact, and he held cooperatively still as the touch drew up and pinned him, heat prickling under his skin where the man’s lips brushed. When Xilarn perched over him, Damissan glanced up, and at the words, I don’t smell breakfast…, his grin stretched. In spite of himself, laughter bubbled up — light and airy.

“You know,” he admitted when it receded, tipping his head, “I did consider bringing breakfast, and I’m sure you deserve it, as compared to whatever you’ve been eating along the way. But…” He eyed Xilarn. “I didn’t know after as late as you had come in and as long as you’d been out how long you might want to sleep, and what you might already have among your things. And…last time I did the shopping I may have over-purchased, so…I thought this time, in the interest of frugality, I might at least ask…”

Reaching, he trailed his fingers up the middle line of Xilarn’s chest, shaping the dips and rises of muscle there before pushing upward just enough to tuck the question against the man’s shoulder.

“Would you like for me to fetch you something in particular? It’s still early enough the market is coming alive but not overcrowded…” He grinned, and kissed just beneath his ear. “And everything is hot. I’d be happy to get dressed again…”

’In the interest of frugality.’

Since that had never been a point of concern before, Xilarn could either assume that one casual mentioning three weeks ago of the fact that money could potentially be a problem later had given Damis a near-perfect understanding of the situation he’d almost immediately found himself in, what with his parents’ letter coming only the day after to inform him that they wouldn’t be supplying him with endless streams of coin for his continued journey. Two days after? Either way, that must’ve been all the convincing Damissan had needed to adopt an air of simplicity and economical reservation.

That, or he hadn’t thought about it at all and was only telling Xilarn what he wanted to hear. Xil suspected the latter, but found that he wasn’t horribly offended by it, not when the younger man looked and sounded quite amused, not when the morning was bright and warm, not when he’d has a decent night’s sleep in a real bed.

He scoffed around a half-smile, anyway. “How thoughtful of you…”

He did consider, briefly, the merits of sending Damis out to ‘fetch’ him anything, since food would likely be needed at some point in the relatively near future and his companion’s absence would give Xil an opportunity to rinse the most recent portions of his journey from his skin.

However, those needs felt less important than the tickle of words dusting beneath his ear and the body just beneath him. And Damissan knew as much. Xil slipped a hand beneath Damis’ neck, cupping the back of his head and drawing him in to catch at his lips in a lingering kiss. “You didn’t miss me that much, did you?” He hummed softly. “I thought you’d be one to appreciate a chance to relax and explore and… not be hovered over by a middle aged man waiting to grope you.”

Damis thought it more likely than not that Xilarn would decide he didn’t need breakfast immediately, but given his unpredictability in the past, he wouldn’t have been surprised either way. That didn’t make guessing right any less pleasing, and he hummed into the kiss.

“I did,” he insisted. “I may not have, if you hadn’t seen fit to give me so much reason to just before leaving me. But you did, and then you left, and I had to wait…” He shifted his hips, lifting them just enough to press. “I know you made good time, and I didn’t believe you when you said it would be only a week, but it’s still such a chore to be impatient.”

…hovered over by a middle aged man waiting to grope you…

Damis blinked upward at the ‘middle aged’ man hovering over him and—well. He flashed his teeth. “It’s a more rewarding experience than I thought to consider, previously. Though I suppose in retrospect, you began introducing me to the concept fairly early. But, just when you truly sold me on how exciting it could be, you left me with some leaf villagers. I promise they’re not nearly so interesting…” He paused. “Though, if we stay any longer, I could introduce you to some I’ve gotten to know-”

He shook his head. “But more to the point, I don’t know how you expected me to ‘relax’ when half of me was concerned you’d die alone raided by bandits and a thousand wildbeasts all because of me while the other half was entirely preoccupied with the thought of you pressing me into the mattress when you did return. It wasn’t an eventless three weeks…but I can’t say it was relaxing. I am glad you are safe, though…”

Damissan spoke entirely too much.

Not that there wasn’t much to discuss, given their recent separation, but it felt like everything that came from the younger man’s mouth was said with the intention of needling him. Maybe that was just what Damis was good at, baiting him into being more irritated than anything else.

Xilarn scoffed and dropped the hand previously at Damis’ neck to catch at his hip and draw him in, fitting them together as Xil adjusted himself to be more properly and attentively situated at his companion’s side, facing him fully. “I didn’t leave you,” he asserted at the first break in Damissan’s words. “If I had, I wouldn’t be here now. I took a brief… hiatus from your presence.” He dropped a kiss to an exposed collarbone and nipped. “But I didn’t leave you.” He decided not to point out his offense over the fact that Damis hadn’t believed his initial claims of only needing to be away for a week. But it was irritating enough to have been wrong and then needed to spend more time than he would’ve liked away without any reminders for it.

He didn’t want to think about exactly how early he’d ‘introduced’ that concept to Damis, and he certainly didn’t care about anyone he’d met in this town during the interim. Meeting people he would likely never see again sounded like as much a chore as being impatient.

But Xilarn smiled against his companion’s skin at the next part. “‘Raided by bandits?’” He repeated. “You don’t think I’ve proven how well I can take care of myself and you from whatever the universe throws at us?” An arm circled about Damis’ waist, and Xil pressed a hand to the small of his back to hold him near. “I’m sorry if I worried you. I tried to keep you as informed as could be managed, but there just isn’t much of anything between here and home, not enough to send you letters with frequency enough to have kept you unconcerned, I’m sure.” He kissed a line from Damissan’s jaw to his ear. “But if you think you were worried, imagine what you put me through. You can’t hardly take care of yourself at all, and someone who looks like you is far more likely to be ‘raided by bandits’ than someone who looks like me.”

When Xil’s fingers moved, they traced a path from Damis’ back, over his rips, down his abdomen and thighs, quietly searching, and his tone was fractionally more reserved when he spoke, “You don’t seem to be beaten or too scraped up, so I hope that means you didn’t get into anything I would disapprove of during my absence…”

I didn’t leave you…

“Mmm…” Damissan hummed, shifting his hips inward cooperatively at the tug and eyeing his companion with good humor. Certainly he hadn’t left permanently, but he had left. A minor point. If Xilarn preferred to call it a ‘hiatus from his presence’ he didn’t suppose it mattered overly much. He was back, and that was the part that mattered.

“You have proven it…ample times,” he conceded. “I know you are capable and were quick, and kept me as informed as you could, and I was sure you would return…but it did not keep me from imagining otherwise in spite of myself from time to time. Any worry I had, I think, was inevitable…” The corner of his lips edged up though, lashes dipping to half-mast as Xilarn’s lips draw up his jaw, If you think you were worried… and amusement warmed his eyes.

“I was in the safety of a city and an inn each night,” he murmured. It was meant as an argument—it wasn’t a comparable circumstance, surely. He had some real reason for concern, whereas what was the worst he could do in a city? Well, perhaps that wasn’t the best question. “I would think I could manage to handle myself within the high walls of civilization, and I would hope there are not many bandit raids that transpire here…”

His attention, though, was wandering, far more eager to mind the path of Xilarn’s touch and the warmth under his skin that bloomed in its path. As it skimmed his thigh, he shifted a leg in, toward Xilarn. “Nothing you would disapprove of,” he promised. But then, inspired either by impulse or the sliver more of seriousness that had made it into Xilarn’s tone with the question, he glanced, attention moving to the man’s face. “No great speeches about the one true God, no fires or fights or excessive amounts of alcohol,” he said, “…and no sleeping with the locals. Or anyone else, for that matter…if that was of particular concern given my history…”

Whether it was entirely fair or not, Damissan's antics during Xilarn's absence were of particular concern. He didn't think it needed to be expressed as such out loud, but Xil had been with this boy long enough to know that he had the very real potential to become... restless. For all the time they'd spent in Jauhar while Damis complained of not getting enough action from the locals, or immediately prior to that when he boasted of successfully getting those attentions, and not really being bothered one way or the other if it offended Xilarn or not (which it shouldn't have, at the time, but 'should not' wasn't always what was), yes, it was a concern.

Never mind that they'd hardly been on speaking terms for more than twenty-four hours before he departed, and Xilarn had no way of knowing if Damis would even care to adopt the idea of 'exclusive' when Xil wasn't immediately around to enforce it. There'd been uncertainties, and he probably should've given a bit more time to making sure they were both fully on the same page before heading out.

It had, admittedly, been a poor time to leave.

But that was behind them, and even though Xilarn had admitted to not fully trusting anything that might come from his companion's mouth, the verbal assertion that he hadn't done anything Xil would've regretted returning to was welcome enough.

And... also strangely not a matter of suspect as to if it was actually the truth or not. That was probably more surprising than Damis not seeking out intimacies from some stranger in the waning weeks. The tension ebbed from Xil's muscles on a quiet sigh, and he shifted to settle his weight more fully over the younger man.

"Good," he hummed as he traced a hand up Damis' throat to catch at his chin and guide him in for a kiss. "I believe you."

Damis hadn’t given the thought of exclusivity overly much consideration, admittedly. It was new, but not so far any sort of challenge to maintain, and thus not a matter of concern. To him, the only reason he had never done it before was because he didn’t trust the company he’d kept then any more than they trusted him and he hadn’t wanted to keep them about in the long term or open himself to being made a fool of.

But if Xilarn had worried over it, he supposed he couldn’t have blamed him. It was at least a more rational concern than the others he’d voiced, and had seemed to be one of the primary reasons he’d been reluctant to bed him to begin with. Perhaps he ought to have done more to allay any concerns earlier, but he couldn’t have said what exactly that might have been—and then, Xilarn answered, good drawing him in with the words, I believe you… and Damis concluded that perhaps he had done well enough for the moment.

His lips parted under the kiss, chin tipping up to meet it and invite more. He had waited, but the waiting was behind them now, Xilarn was here, and there was no reason for him not to be that much nearer in short order. Raising his hips off the mattress to press toward the man over him, Damis reached, winding his arms loosely behind Xilarn’s neck so that his fingers could trace down, over the definition of his shoulders and between the rocky crystals dotting his back.

“Have you thought about what you might do with me when you return?” he asked. “I have been impatient, you know…and I spent entirely too much time thinking about you.”

The Only Black Uke

At least he couldn't say that he was disappointed in any lack of excitement for their reunion. Not that he expected there would be, as Damis was fairly often in a positive mood, and that couldn't be a bad thing, given the situation. But nothing felt out of order, and despite the separation, most everything here remained as he'd left it. No strange and unwelcome hints of deceit or other unpleasantries. No girls' undergarments or half drunken bottles of liquor. His expectations had been low. What of it?

When Damissan pressed to him, Xil was only too happy to oblige with 'more.' He claimed Damis' lips with his own, tracing the shape of them with his tongue and tasting him when they tangled. A hand brushed down the other man's thigh, catching at the back of his knee and lifting to encourage him to wrap his leg around Xilarn's hips.

He peppered kisses from Damissan's jaw, down his throat, to his chest and only stalled to blink up in mild inquisitiveness at the first sound of his companion's words. With no further warning, his easy smile cracked into a wicked smirk, and Xil's skated from Damis' abdomen to lower. "Oh, I might have," Xilarn admitted. "But I'm more interested in hearing about how you imagined I'd 'press you into the mattress.' So why don't you tell me in explicit detail, and I'll deliver to the best of my abilities."
