Cambria blinked, nodding slowly. “Yeah, Zack that’s fine. Don’t worry.” She reached over, taking his hand and giving it a light squeeze. “Take your time. I’ll talk to you soon.” Her voice was as warm as her gaze as she looked at him. “I love you...and I’m really, really glad that you’re all right. I can’t lose you. I refuse to lose you…” Like she lost Evan...and might lose Malcolm. She couldn’t lose Zack. Not again. The past few days had been utter hell. “...Please call me soon, okay?”

Zack nodded and gave Cambria’s hand a squeeze before he lifted it to his mouth and planted a soft kiss on the back of it. “I’ll call. You’ll see me before dinner time, all right? I love you. I don’t break my promises.” He didn’t usually make them, just in case. But he couldn’t lie to her; she’d been here with him through all of this. They had Evan back—that meant things could go back to normal. No more late nights out, no more desperately trying to find him. No more putting off having fun or enjoying life because he was stricken with guilt, or because she was too worried to function. At least, as long as he wasn’t responsible for whatever was going on with Malcolm. He didn’t hold onto her hand for long, fearing she might feel how cold he’d suddenly gotten, or that she’d feel the tremors he was trying to suppress. “Text me if you get any update on his condition, okay?”

“Of course I will, Zack. You can count on me.” She gave a little wave, and leaned close, kissing his cheek gently. She was worried about him. She was worried about Evan...she was very worried about Malcolm...and right now, Malcolm was the priority...so she went back up to his room and sat by his bed, plugging in her phone, so she’d be ready when Zack called her. Before dinner.
He had promised.
