"You can cough it up, right?" Malkam asked.

He wasn't a bastion of owl facts but he knew about pellets.

He looked both ways, then took Lawrence into the ladies bathroom, placing him on the sink, so he could vomit in relative private.

He kept on looking at the door huffily.

"Just don't...choke or anything. It'll be worse getting it out the other way." He shifted around uncomfortably, "Maybe not for you. Whatever. Just do it," Malkam said, locking the door.

Lawrence gave Malkam a very anxious wide eyed look for his comment but found that when he was in the bathroom that it was easier to get rid of the bug than he thought.

Still, the experience was traumatic and undignified and he was a little less fiesty than he had been as he hopped back up onto Malkam's shoulder, actually hazarding a few wingbeats as he did.

"Maybe not for me." he repeated in the same tone Malkam had used.

"Because you are gay," Malkam clarified flatly, crunching the bug and going to unlock the door again. "This is really what you do all day? ...Did," he asked. "Just hiding and going around and listening?"

They still hadn't heard anything interesting.

"Mik would have liked the party," he said, mostly to himself.

He didn't feel like going back. He wanted to check out those stairs again. At the bottom was a dark, lonely door, and on that door there was a lock.

"Hey, what do you think about this?" He asked Lawrence.

Quote:

21 - 30: You decide to check out the basement, which takes a bit of lock picking (or breaking). Worry not about security: it looks like someone else has already taken care of that, a glowing red device attached to it, probably feeding it an empty loop. A level down, you find a bunch of crates, filled with familiar runics tinged in red. But you hear someone coming down the hall-- better get back to the party.

Lawrence tilted his head at Malkam again, but this time he didn't bother answering him. It was all he used to do all day, and he was gay, or some approximation of it. If that meant that the young man wanted to think of him as some sort of depraved pervert, then that was simply how it would be.

And again it was about Mikael, Mikael who he'd deliberately not brought because he'd be a liability, because he'd be fixated on the owl and not keeping himself or Lawrence himself safe.

He hopped down to eye the lock, checking that it was quiet at the top of the stairs. There was a moment where he spread his wings and hopped to the floor, appearing in his normal human form for an instant. He leaned in to insert the owl talon claw ring into the lock, carefully twisting it, until it clicked, unhooking the lock itself and then shifting right back into his owl shape. "There." he said on the floor.

"Pick me up."

Malkam obliged him, since he couldn't fly anyway, and edged into the dark. There was a camera angled at the door, but something on it beeped an unnatural red.

The basement went down, and down, and Malkam started reporting his location because he felt like maybe they shouldn't be this far in the dark. There were crates everywhere. Piles and piles of them, and when he went to crack a lid open, the crate glowed red too.

"I'm in the basement. There's something down here, a bunch of boxes, all filled with weapons."

"We read you," Harrison responded, "Get on back. s**t doesn't go down until midnight."

Malkam heard a shuffling from upstairs, and did what he was told.

Lawrence could see just fine in the dark but he couldn't figure out what was in the boxes, nor could he make out the colour of the crate's glow. Things were generally very different and he was glad he had Malkam to hold onto in order to avoid getting disorientated or lost in the strange basement.

They had till Midnight to kill, and that meant a good while of simply trying to blend in and keeping out of the way of other people.

"We just need to be incognito." he said quietly. "Can you find somewhere to hang around, get a drink or something, it might take some time."

"Ha, you want me to get a drink? We're in America, right?" Malkam asked, but went over to the bar even if he was pretty sure the drinking age was higher.

"It's my first time being in America," he said, "and I can't even tell what the girls look like." It was the first costume party he'd been to where the focus was on masks and not girls being slutty and guys being funny.

He didn't want to do shots, so he just ordered a big, round goblet's worth of the featured wine, and they didn't even stamp his hand.

He held it up for Lawrence to taste first.

"Seems like trouble, to me," He mumbled. If they were stopping a weapons deal, wouldn't the guys doing the dealing have weapons too? "And those other guys are all scarred up, are they any good?"

Lawrence didn't know the drinking age in America offhand. He had always been a little to old to be concerned about it. He tested the wine critically but owl taste buds just weren't the same.

"They are very very good." he muttered quietly, which was easy when he fluffed up his feathers. "And yes, they probably do have weapons, which is why it's best to bring some of the stronger hunters along. We just need to help flush out prey."

It was still very hard focus on saying words and not simply shrieking when he spoke.

"They must be good at hiding, because I do not see them," Malkam said. His accent made him stand out. If Lawrence talked, even in an American accent, they would stand out a lot worse.

"If I was dressed in something good, I would ask somebody to dance."
PostPosted: Fri Mar 31, 2017 4:18 pm

"You look fine in the outfit. Next time I'll help with makeup though." the owl said.

"But no dancing please, it's hard enough to keep my balance."

"Fine, we'll just stand here," Malkam said, "It's...whatever. Are you kidding? I wouldn't talk to girls in it."

He had a taste himself, and the wine was smooth and clear. He didn't know what type it was, but it was good. He probably shouldn't get carried away with it. He wanted to be level-headed when the shooting started.

He decided to talk to the owl instead.

"I bet you've been a ton of parties like this by now, huh? Not just since you got here. Before, too."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 01, 2017 2:25 pm

Lawrence fell quiet at the sharp retort, not entirely sure what was offensive about offering to help with make up and not about to try and navigate it.

He hunkered down and closed his eyes but was still listening to everything around him, everything that was too loud and too much.

"Yes. I suppose you can say I have. They were a networking necessity. I don't actually enjoy crowds."

"You left for a party lifestyle and you don't even like to party. You'd rather be by yourself, va?" Malkam asked. "But we ended up here anyway."

Malkam liked this stuff. It'd be better if everyone there wasn't trying to kill them. ....Wouldn't it?

Some part of him thought that was part of what made this an even better party.

If I'd gone with you, I could have been the princess and you could have been the prince!

I would have liked that better, Malk thought back to Jorm.

"I don't know why I left. I don't know why I ever leave." he said quietly. "But yes, here we are."

He more or less gave up on trying to strike up a conversation with Malkam, concerned that every time he did he just made things progressively worse.

"Because when you're gone, you don't have to deal with the consequences of what you left," Malkam answered for him. "Just everyone that stayed has to. But Mik left too, I guess. ...He wanted to leave. And now I did the same thing. ...I didn't want to leave everybody behind. But it felt like, if I let them go...they'd be just- gone. They were in danger. Everybody else would be okay, for a while, even without me. Even if I couldn't get back."
