Caspian's fingers threaded through the mahogany locks in absent gestures; Michael's hair was a lot less neat and a lot longer than it had been when he'd first met him. He liked the feel of it against his fingers, liked the sort of rakish nonchalance that the style gave off, less the tight laced military man he'd been before.
And the fact that Michael was actually going back to school...
Caspian's heart felt warm as Michael tugged his fingers up, lips pressing against the tips. "A month ago? You waited an entire month to tell me that you were going back to school?" He said, in mock outrage, but he wasn't really upset. It was something Michael had been considering for a long time now, after all; it made him feel all fluttery and pleased when he thought about it.
He couldn't help the roll of his eyes. "Well, that's Peter for you. I mean, you're both smart, don't get me wrong, that guy is just super outrageously ambitious."
Caspian didn't protest or pull away as Michael played with his fingers. A small smile tugged at his lips, and the hand in Michael's hair slid down to rest against the hollow of Michael's throat, Caspian replacing the one that was now in Michael's grasp.
"That's awesome," he said meaningfully. "Really. That's amazing. I'm super glad for you, and you're gonna do super great."
Caspian was silent for a moment, staring up at his fiance, searching his eyes.
"This is what you want, right? You're not just doing this for me?"

”Yes, I waited to tell you,” he admitted with a grin, amused by Caspian’s attempts at pretending to be upset about it, but he could see that it made him happy to know that this was something he decided to do. They’d talked about it, of course, but it was a big step to actually do it.
He could see the look that Caspian was giving him, could see the way he tried to read his expression, tried to see if this was something he was doing for himself and not just for Caspian. All Michael could do was smile wider, and then lean down so he could press a quick kiss to Caspian’s lips.
“This is what I want,” he confirmed. “Your encouragement just helped me along the way.” Because without Caspian there to talk things through, to discuss what he could have done with his life if it wasn’t for the military, he didn’t know where he would be. Perhaps volunteer as a fireman just as he had in those dreams of the future. But those were not good dreams, and as much as he wanted to help people, Caspian hadn’t been in his life in those dreams.
Instead, he was going down a new path, rendering those dark dreams of the future completely irrelevant.
“And I’m doing this for you, too,” he quietly confessed, but his eyes were shining with mirth, “Because you’re my life now, and I want to live my life for you.”

He could still remember the conversations he'd had with Michael, late into the night; talking about his frustrations with his job, how he had never really wanted to be a teacher, how he was just sort of going through the motions but that he didn't actually care too much about his position.
And now - this. It might not have seemed like a major ordeal to anyone else, but Caspian knew how much of a big step this was for Michael; what a monumental, crucial turning point this was, because once he took this first move, everything else would - hopefully - fall into place.
One could hope. But there was something ridiculously endearing and heartwarming about Michael following what he actually wanted to instead of just what he could do.
Caspian lifted a hand, pressing his palm to Michael's cheek, fingers trailing over the stubbled jaw with a tenderness that shone in his eyes, the smile on his lips quirking them upwards into an affectionate, almost mischievous look, his heart steady in his chest.
"Good," he said, and then, "I'm glad," and then, "You're my life too."
His hand shifted, curled in the neckline of Michael's shirt and pulled him down for a much longer, warmer kiss, Caspian sighing happily into it.
"And I'm proud of you."

Michael tended to just float along with whatever happened to him. After years of ambition and having it result in horrible tragedy, Michael had no desire to put himself into a situation where he could look back and know it was his fault for what happened.
But he was trying to get better, for himself and for Caspian and his family and friends. There were a lot of things that Michael was opening himself up to again now that he realized it was okay to be himself, and without Caspian Michael was sure he would have been stuck in the same place in his life forever.
Now all that was left was for him to actually seek someone out to talk about his problems and the past that still haunted him, just as his father had been trying to get him to do for years. But now, with Caspian, he had a reason to try to get better.
Michael smiled as Caspian pressed his palm to his cheek, leaning into the touch and feeling his heart leap with love and delight at the way Caspian’s eyes shone brightly as he looked up at him, and at the way he smiled at him.
He leaned into the kiss with ease, his own lips still quirked into a smile, knowing that he’d come a long way from the scowls and angry frowns that Caspian had to get used to.
“That’s all I want,” Michael mumbled against his fiance’s lips. “You to be proud of me and love me. Because I love you and am proud of you, too.”
And no matter what the future held, they would always have each other. One way or another, even if death were to claim one or both. Michael was determined to make Caspian as happy as humanly possible while they were together.
