March 2017 Math Prompt

"Today I'd like to see how high you can count using 5s!"

Rules:
  1. Have your student count as high as they can using 5s! (example 5, 10, 15. etc)
  2. Post a small RP response in thread with how your student felt about the assignment.

Caol actually felt pretty bad for Ayida when she started choking at the answers. He desperately wanted to help his friend, but he knew he couldn't do so without making her angry at him, so he just watched. He'd try to do something to cheer her up later, maybe go out for ice cream or something.

When it came to his turn, he was ready to show off just how many numbers he knew but paused when he realized how much more upset that might make Ayida. "5, 10, 15, 20...." He barked out, ready to recite the next ones when he saw his friend's face. "Umm.... 25... 30.... I think." After that, he sat down and gave a gentle smile at the hybrid girl. Well, he did have to do better than her, even if he didn't want her to be too upset by his showing off.

March 2017 Math Prompt

"I'd like you to tell me how you've most recently used Mathematics in your everyday life."

Rules:
  1. Have your student tell me how they've recently used Math to solve something in their lives. (This can be extremely detailed or a mundane use, up to you!)

User Image
Kara listened to the teacher talk about the assignment. She was hoping for something a little easier, maybe some Math problems to solve or equations to learn. It wasn't that she didn't use Math nearly every day because she did, but she had a rather hard time adequately using words to explain things in ways that people could understand. She frowned, mulling over the paper as she tapped her pencil against the desk.

I use Math a lot in my hobbies. I want to become a Mechanical Engineer when I grow up, so I'm constantly using math to help me design and otherwise repair electronics. I have to understand measurements and equations when developing each piece because every piece has to fit precisely or the whole project can become useless. Without Math, I don't believe that my career path would even exist.

She frowned as she finally put the pencil down. She wasn't completely satisfied with her answer, but she didn't want to fill it with mountains of jargon that most people wouldn't even understand. In the end, she decided that she'd merely leave it at that. If the teacher wanted to know more she was sure he could ask her.

Amber knew a little bit about clocks. She'd seen her mother fix one once. Well, the outside of one, but she'd still taken bits of it apart. Mama had showed her what the different hands meant and how to properly read them. Amber managed to pick up the lesson pretty quickly, though when they filled out the homework sheet she still concentrated fiercely on all the hands and numbers to make sure she'd gotten good answers. She would hate to let her mama and teachers down in a moment of carelessness by trying to be fast when she still had to look at the clock for a long moment to make sure she had the different hands correct. She would save speed for another day when she was better at reading the clocks.

Acacia frowned. Clocks weren't something she had an interest in. What did it matter what time it was? You could just go outside and check the sky. Or just wait for a parent to screech about a particular time. Never once had she needed to know the time, and the prospect wasn't at all enticing. But... Well, she'd noticed when sneaking peeks in cookbooks that there were all sorts of times listed down. If she was gonna bake, she'd probably have to learn this kind of stuff.

Heaving a soft sigh Acacia bent her attention to the lesson, then to the paper slipped on her desk. It took an annoyingly long time to finish the assignment, and she was probably one of the last ones to finish and turn in her paper. She'd had to stare at several of the pictures for long moments, particularly questions 11 and 12. It wasn't right for the hour hand to move away from the number it was supposed to represent! Why couldn't it just stay on the number and move only when it was time to? Acacia shook her head at the silliness of clocks, then turned her paper in.

Quartz flipped through her math book and found the definition for equilateral triangle. She neatly wrote her answer on her sheet of paper.

An equilateral triangle is a triangle in which all sides at equal lengths. The angles of an equilateral triangle are always 60°.

She paused while she pummeled her brain for some examples. One example in particular presented itself.

A lot of signs are done as equilateral triangles, such as road signs and especially warning signs.

She added a quick little sketch below of a road with a sign next to it. Finished with her homework she got up to turn in the assignment.

3: Scalene Triangle

Cyril was pretty pleased that all he had to do was write about the triangles. He wasn't too fond of presenting. Taking a brief breath, he put pencil to paper and wrote out his explanation.

Scalene triangles are triangles where all the sides are different lengths. The angles of the inside are also all different. If a triangle can count as any of the other types of triangles, then it can't be scalene. Most randomly drawn triangles are scalene.

Thankfully, he didn't have to pull out a ruler or anything to give his example. He wasn’t an artist and it wasn’t the best triangle, but it showed an example of a scalene triangle and that was all that mattered. He couldn't think of any other examples of one, so he hoped it would be good enough.

Cider did not like math. She did not like numbers, she did not like writing them, or reading them or even looking at them, and this worksheet looked so hard. It wasn’t even really math…not really it was telling time…which she was very good at…just on the clocks where the numbers were already spelled out…not the round ones…how did it go again? The big hand was the seconds? Well, then what was the blue line? Was that the minutes?

Cider frowned, staring hard at her paper, as though willing the right answers to just appear. When they didn’t, she cautiously looked up, hoping to catch a glance at someone else’s paper…not to copy…j-just to make sure she was on the right track for this…

Sadly though, there was nobody of who she could look off of, so she wrote down the answers that she hoped were right.

When she was halfway done the worksheet, however...it came to her. The blue line was the hours! Sighing, Cider went back to the top of the paper and began fixing her answers.

For some reason, Skylar just could not wrap his head around someone having a favorite number. What would draw somebody to a specific number? He had read things about people who were superstitious and always believed that one number over any of the other ones could bring fortune and even misfortune. The Hybrid didn't believe any of that nonsense. Then there were others, the ones that enjoyed to gamble away their earnings, most of them seemed to have favorites as well.

It took some time for him to think what could be an appropriate favorite number before he decided on one. "My favorite number is 111, not only is it a palindrome, but it's just simple and easy to look at." Well, that was long enough to have a favorite number, Skylar didn't need one anyway.

Pepper wasn't entirely sure she had a favorite number. Sure there were a lot of numbers out there, and there was probably people who did have favorites, but she hadn't thought about it before. As she waited her turn to speak, she thought about it. It would have to be an even number, because otherwise one would get left out. Two seemed pretty small, but she thought it might fit. She stood up to speak. "Two is my favorite number, because then when you go out places, everyone has a buddy. It's important to have a buddy, so that you don't get lost." Her point made, she sat herself right back in the chair to hear the next freshling speak.

Pop quiz? Elliah felt confident this time around. She’d been studying, surprisingly, for her classes. It was getting to be crunch time, and she for sure didn’t want to have to retake the classes. Idly clicking her nails against the tabletop, she tried not to mutter her answers under her breath. It was a bad habit, one she knew she should probably break, but couldn’t quite make herself.

As she filled in the last of the answers, she settled back into her seat. She was fairly confident she’d gotten at least half of them right. She’d studied darnit! Ok, so maybe most of her studying had actually been looking through fashion magazines, but who cared? She wasn’t going to stay on top of the latest fashion design by working on her math homework.

Reina blinked her wide, bright eyes a few times at the teacher. Her favorite number? Huh. That was a hard question. She hummed, swinging her feet back and forth, ears pinning back in concentration. Her claws drummed dully against her knees, and in her head, she couldn't help but count them out. One, two, three, four, five... one, two, three, four, five... On and on. Was five her favorite number? No. What about ten? Hm. Nah.

Two? Eh. No. Forty-two? She wasn't sure where that came from, but no. The more she thought about it, the odder the question became in her mind. Who would really have a favorite number? She considered that it might be four--each had a partner, and it wasn't just a single group--but quickly abandoned that. Anxious energy picked up as she waited for her turn to speak, letting a claw drag across the desk absently. A triangle--three sides, roughly even--was doodled in the air, and her lips pursed. When came time for her to speak, her ears were still a bit pinned back, but she forced herself to smile and for them to lift. "Um... three-hundred and thirty-three," she said slowly, thinking of the triangle. "Cuz it's... um, like a triangle, and it's a neat number, and triangles are really neat shapes!" Did that work? She piped down and smiled nervously at the teacher, her tail wagging in her anxiousness. But it worked, right? Apparently so.

Did people really have favorite numbers?

*Failed*
Normally Iah was really good at math, but just something about the current thing they were learning just wasn't clicking for him. No matter how much he studied it outside of class, he kept not understanding it! He had even gone to see a tutor about it, only to have them try and force a calculator down his throat. The problem with that is he couldn't understand the device to save his life. He then had to ask for lessons on how to use a calculator for like the 100th time, only to not get it at all once more. It seemed to be the only device he didn't understand in this new world since coming here, and almost all tutors had given up on him because of it.

So it came as no surprise that he had done badly on the pop quiz, sighing heavily as he did so. How was he going to pass this quiz if he couldn't understand the material? Maybe if he did it a second time he would finally grasp it?

As he went over the quiz a second time, something finally clicked for him. He finally managed to see the pattern that he normally associated with math, going about finally putting together a formula that would work for him to solve the answers on this pop quiz. Before long he was zooming through the whole thing, even able to double check his formula to see if it was working. Now he had it, and was flying through the assignment with no issue. Now his math expertise was showing, it giving him a sort of smile as he finished. This was where his talents were, in making mathematical formulas to understand the world around him. If anything this was a sort of lesson to him. Never give up, for there is always a way to find the solution; calculator or not.
