Once again, Tristan was marveled by his companion.
Her genuine interest in something so mundane as his interest in literature brought a soft smile to his lips as he watched her. He found the way she flushed to be endearing, even if it meant that she didn't think very highly of herself. Something in his heart ached, encouraged him to say something, but he didn't think he deserved too so the words were swallowed back down his throat.
Instead, he did what he felt he was better at, he listened.
The comment about making jewelry had him reaching automatically for the necklace he knew he would not find around his neck. It had gone when he had left the negaverse and the guise of Captain Aluminite behind. Hand falling short, it dropped against the table and he did his best to keep his nails from rapping against the smooth surface out of nerves. "Would you - " he paused, wondering if it was too soon to be so bold about something she seemed to be proud but embarrassed of. "Would you let me watch, some day?"
He could already picture taking photos of her as she worked, fiddling with his camera as she crafted.
"I'm relearning my favorites," he admitted after he allowed silence to stretch between them, gaze dropped to focus on the lid of his cup. "Do you have a favorite you would recommend?"

She stared at him as he asked if she would mind letting him watch her someday, and she tried very hard not to let her face turn any darker than it already had. Still, she smiled at him, feeling both a little nervous and excited and happy and it was all very pleasant. There were few people who actually wanted to see her work, but she didn’t blame them!
"It’s dreadfully boring, but if you would like to, I don’t mind," she said quietly, one of her hands pulling a little nervously at the sleeve ofher sweater. "It’s kind of dirty and messy and a lot of trial and error, but I don’t think I’d mind the company sometime. It’s kind of a solo process," she warned him, knowing she’d feel guilty if he got bored with it.
Tristan admitting to relearning his favorites had her looking at him with some confusion, because she could have sworn that she saw some sadness in his eyes, but couldn’t quite tell because he dropped his gaze to the lid of his cup. But after a few moments he spoke again.
"Oh!" she gasped softly, because she had a lot of favorites, but wasn’t sure what he might like. "Crocheting. I like crocheting a lot, but I don’t know if you’d like it. It’s very calming and helps me focus. Or… I like needle point, too. But…" she paused with a small frown, realizing that it was probably a little too girly for him.
"Sometimes I help with the small theaters around the city, but mostly for DCU. Costumes and things. You might like something there. Like, working with lights or sound or even acting. I bet you’d be really good at it," she said with absolute certainty. "Have you tried that before? Or maybe you already know you don’t like it, and that’s fine," she quickly said, nervously biting at her lip. "I just… since you like literature, it’s kind of similar."

Tristan thought that Charlie was going to rebuff him, tell him that jewelry making and art were private things that she didn't want to share with someone who was, still, virtually a stranger to her. He was a stranger to himself after all, fathoming why she would want to spend time with him was nearly impossible. But, to his surprise she gave him a yes and his brows lifted and he licked his lips, trying to hide the please smile that stretched across his mouth.
"I like watching," he assured her. Watching people was something he did often now as he was trying to learn how to be a member of society again when there were so many gaps in his memory, blanks he didn't think he would ever get back. "If you enjoy it, I'll enjoy it." It sounded cheesier than he had intended when it left his mouth, but he meant his words earnestly.
Charlie began speaking of other hobbies she enjoyed, instead of books that he had thought she would list and he found himself chuckling, a shy smile on his mouth as he licked his lips again and dropped his gaze to his cup that he was drawing towards him again. "My hands might be too clumsy for those." They were, after all, much larger than his companion's. "But if you teach me, I am a willing student."
Who knew what his hands were familiar with that didn't involve a camera or fighting?
"I - " he hesitated, he was always hesitating, "I don't think so. But...I could try?" Plays were universal, to some degree, weren't they? "At the least...I could do promotional photoshoots, if needed, perhaps?"

She knew she’d gotten sidetracked, thinking of her own favorite things to share with him instead of picking out a favorite book. Mostly because it was a little embarrassing. She felt as though her choices in literature weren’t that great, so if she focused on the other things she liked, it wouldn’t be so bad.
"My favorite is The Princess and the Goblin," she mumbled shyly, her fingertips brushing against the edge of her cup. "It’s probably not anything guys would like. I also like… pretty much anything fantasy or medieval or both."
But it was better if she was talking about other things, instead of her weird interests in literature. She nodded in understanding as Tristan agreed to try, her smile brightening as she looked up at him, not even caring that they were just sitting and talking, because this was Tristan and she very much enjoyed being around him.
"I bet they would love that! They’re always needing people with your talent. I can see if anyone I know needs to have a photoshoot done. Especially for promoting the shows," she said, knowing that he probably didn’t think he would be that great with fiber arts. "And don’t worry. They have big crochet hooks and knitting needles. I can teach you if you’d like!"
But again, that was pretty silly and he was probably just saying nice things to indulge her.

For the first time since they'd met up, Tristan pulled out his phone. It wasn't for anything arbitrary, like most people tended to do these days. There was no checking the time or even glancing at any missed messages or emails. Instead, Tristan opened the note function and carefully typed Books to Read: 1) The Princess and the Goblin. With that task done, back into the his pocket was the phone banished.
"If you like it, then I think I will too." Maybe he wouldn't take the same enjoyment out of it as she did, but it was clearly something that she was fond of and that meant that he'd would find something about it that he'd enjoy.
Her enthusiasm was contagious and Tristan appreciated the way she made him feel...brighter as a whole. He felt as if he'd been stuck inside during a terrible storm only to step out and find that it was ending and the sun was making it's way across the horizon whenever they were together. It was calming, soothing in a way that spending time with Fiona was not.
Fiona was great. Charlie was great in a different way.
"If you promise not to laugh, I would like to learn." It would give him something to do with his hands on days where taking photographs wasn't as viable. After all, he couldn't hide behind his camera lens forever.

Charlie watched as Tristan pulled out his phone watching curiously as he seemed to type something into it. She could see just enough of the screen that didn’t make it seem as though it was a text, but maybe writing a note? Was he really writing down the book she suggested?
She tried to ignore the swell of happiness that rose up inside her, staining her cheeks and forcing her lips into a smile. In an attempt to stop herself from looking too ridiculous, she bit at her lip, and then when that didn’t work, she lifted her cup to her face to chew on the lid.
But then something he said had her freezing in place, her eyes wide in shock.
"I would never laugh!" she practically leaned over the table, reaching to grab at one of his hands as if doing so would convince him that she was absolutely serious about this. But then she paused and grimaced. "I mean, I do laugh, but it would never be at you for trying something! And you could never look silly when learning something new!"
Okay, maybe she was over reacting a little and she tried to ease back down into her seat, since she had to stand in order to properly reach across due to her shorter stature. She could already tell people were looking their way and she was pretty sure the loud scrape across the floor was her chair as she jumped up.
"I promise I won’t ever laugh at you," she said much quieter now as she began to withdraw her hand, feeling embarrassed and a little silly. Maybe it was because she was so tired when people laughed at her for being strange that she wanted to make sure he knew that she would never, ever.

Tristan watched quietly as an array of emotions passed across his companions face and he couldn't help the fondness that overcame his own expression as he looked at her. It was hard not to smile at her delight, to be swept up in her positivity that he wanted to grasp like a warm blanket he could wrap around himself for comfort.
"I know you wouldn't." The second he said it, he knew it was undeniably true. Charlie would never mock him for struggling with something, she had only ever been encouraging to him since they first met and he had asked her to let him photograph her. Allowing her to claim his hand was easy, with Tris leaning forward to make it easier for her.
All in all, the man seemed oblivious to the stares they were receiving, only letting his brow furrow as he watched the way she sunk back into her seat and tried to take her hand back. Without a second thought, he was reaching after it, fingers slipping between hers and he squeezed, too reluctant to let go. "I know." He assured her, rubbing his thumb over hers. "I won't laugh at you either, but we can laugh together. Okay?"
That seemed like a more reasonable option that suited both of them.

When Tristan grasped her hand, there was a strange fluttery sort of feeling in her chest, and she stared across the table at him with uncertainty, but also knowing that she considered him to be a good friend already. She didn’t have a lot of really good friends, despite her friendliness. She pushed whatever she was feeling down, and forced a smile back on her face.
“Okay,” she agreed, because why would Tristan lie to her when so far everything he’d done was to make her feel comfortable? “Okay, we can laugh together.”
Did that mean he intended on being her friend for more than just the season? Or year? She couldn’t bear the thought of not being able to text him or talk to him, but she also knew she was probably asking for a lot. She just wanted to make sure he was happy as much as she was happy.
“Thank you. For meeting up with me,” she said, trying not to seem too obvious that she very much enjoyed his company. “We should do this often. At least every few days. Unless that’s too much!” Because she didn’t want him getting tired of her!

Her acceptance that they'd laugh together and not at each other had him relaxing, sinking back into his seat as much as their joined hands would allow him. As far as the man was concerned, Charlie was the only thing he was focused on and if she wasn't panicked any longer then he was being a good friend! Reassuring her was easy because the girl was a bright light in his deary day and he was determined to make sure that she knew he appreciated her and what she brought to their friendship.
He didn't have many people to lean on yet so it was important that he made sure they understood that he cherished them in whatever small way he could manage.
"Hey," he said in a low, quiet voice. Sitting up again he gathered her hand up with both of his. "I'm glad you texted me, okay?" He had been trying to figure out a reason to message her to hang out since they met. She had just made it easy for him to go yes.
He considered her offer, his smile soft and fond when he squeezed her hand. "I'd like that. A lot."

Although she tried to be friendly with everyone, there were surprisingly few people Charlie would consider herself close to. She didn’t think she was very close with Tristan, but she thought she might like to get to know him a lot more, and maybe one day their friendship would be much stronger than it was now.
Almost as though it was just a small flower starting to bud, Charlie hoped with all her might that she would be able to keep spending time with Tristan, in whatever capacity she could.
Green eyes lifted as he took her hand in both of his, and she tried not to be too breathless as he smiled at her, the kindness in his eyes always seeming to blow her away. Even if he was unsure of himself, and even if she was unsure of herself, they seemed to reach some kind of quiet understanding.
“Me too,” she agreed, smiling back as she reached out her other hand to place on top of his as he held her other hand. It was silly and probably a little childish, but that was okay. As long as she could see him smile, she would be happy.
"Thank you, Tristan."
