She was beginning to fear that even the witch was not going to believe her story. But the witch had seemed to know of the legend, perhaps she knew something Briinah did not. She closed her eyes and tried to picture the account in her mind while also trying to save herself from the gory details of her mothers death. Think of it academically, like statement for a trial.
"He had been strong enough to break through the door. It had been splintered on the floor." She started to speak as she kept her eyes closed. "When I walked into the room he was covered in blood and standing over my mother. She was already dead by the time I got there."
It pained her to recall the image. She lost any chance to say goodbye and she will always resent that. "The room was a mess, the dresser had been toppled over and the bed had been moved. There was blood and claw marks on the wall and floor. I only saw him after he had turned back into a man. He was laying her on the bed when I walked in the room. I tried to catch him but he jumped out the window."
When she opened her eyes again, they looked cold and distant. "I know it was foolish of me to try and catch him; without knowing how I would have killed him without being possessed myself." she admitted. At the time she didn't care, she was so full of rage and sorrow; she still was.

The girl admits to not seeing him as a sermal, but believes he is because of the claw marks? Baba wasn't entirely sure what to make of the account. She didn't want to spend to much energy on it so she would give her some options.
"Yes, there is a way to vanquish the spirit without risk of possession." She brought her hand to her chin, "However I do not know of the details of such a task. I can offer you a basic protection pendant for bringing the gifts from the village. If you want my notes on the legend I will require something more of you."
Baba studied the girl before her from head to toe. She appeared to be contemplating what she would ask for, looking at Briinah as if she were a market stall. "Tell me Briinah, is your body pure?" She asked bluntly.

Briinah did NOT like the way this woman was looking at her. She looked at her as if she was an object or some commodity. She liked her question even less, she did not like where this was going. Her cheeks flushed red and her face twisted into an angry pout.
"Of course I am pure! Why would you even ask such a question?" She was ready to take the pendant an leave, she didn't want to give this damned witch any more than she had to. "If you don't know any more about it I am not sure your information is worth the trouble!"

Baba rolled her eyes. Young women always got so sensitive about purity. She pointed her finger at Briinah's neck. "Your hair. I would trade a lock of it for the papers in my house about the Dread Sermal legend."
Virgin maidens hair had uses in Baba's spells and potions. People believed it had all sorts of properties. Some used it in everything from potions to extend youth, to spells to increase fertility. To Baba it held more value than a stack of papers about a long dead forest spirit.
"I can't be bothered to do your research for you. If you want the pages you can have them. They may lead you to some other text or hint of how to defeat it." Baba shrugged nonchalantly, "Or you could just take the pendant. Although, if you are truly dealing with the Dread Sermal, it would be to powerful to be warded off by a simple trinket."

Briinah was still a little surprised by the witches request. She didn't see the correlation between her hair and her virginity. The question was just so rude and random. She reached up to grasp the hair that had fallen over her shoulder. Her hair was precious to her, it was her glorious shimmering security blanket. She didn't like the idea of this hag cutting into it. However if she only needed a lock of it, it might be worth trading for the texts so long as it wasn't noticeable.
She brushed through her hair nervously. Even if the pendant didn't work she would rather be safe than sorry. "A-alright," she started meekly, "You can have some of my hair, so long as it isn't noticeable. I just hope your information is good, I have been growing this hair since I was five!"
Briinah flipped her hair back and pulled some hair that was under the rest and in the back of her head forward.

Without saying anything further Baba pulled a small curved knife from her dress pocket and approached Briinah. She leaned in close and twisted some of the golden hair around her finger. She used her other hand to carefully press the lock between her knife and her thumb. The blade was sharp enough to glide through the hair with ease. She gave Briinah a wink as she stepped back to turn towards the house.
Once in the house she set the basket on the floor and tied the hair with a piece of twine from the desk. She made her way to the small pile under the chair and pulled out a sheet she had read earlier. Baba quickly went over to the stacks in the corner and pulled a handful she thought looked familiar. After briefly thumbing through them she took two of the small journals and ripped a few pages out of them. She then rolled the pages up together and slid them into a leather tube.
Baba then went over to the desk and pulled out one of the drawers. The contents made a clanging metal sound and she pulled up a wad of tangled necklaces. She tugged at one of them until it came loose from the knot.
She brought the items outside and presented them to the impatient girl. "These are the papers, if you haven't already, I would suggest you look into the library archives in Zidel." She held up the pendant and offered it to her. It was a simple oval shape and one side was mirror reflective. "Wear this to help ward off wicked spirits that might seek to possess you."

Briinah stiffened when she brought the knife so close to her neck. The hag made her uneasy enough as she was. She didn't ever want her to come that close again. She slumped with relief when the witch went back into the house. Her hands felt sweaty again while she waited for the items.
She was surprised to see the papers so neatly rolled up into a sleeve, It was considerate of her to not just hand her a stack of loose papers. She looked at her reflection as she reached for the mirror pendant. She was less confident in its abilities but somehow holding it made her feel better. Briinah then tucked the roll of papers into her belt and nodded to Baba. Even if the papers contained nothing, the suggestion to go to Zidel might be more promising.
"Th-thank you, I will look there once when I get the chance."
With the transaction complete they had nothing more to say to each other. Briinah was able to make it back to the village by following her trail in the snow. She thanked the old man for helping her and she made her way back to Coeld to get some rest and study the pages in detail.
