"I always wondered what that specific archive meant," Samuel was saying almost more to himself, "I went to research it further when Lucky mentioned his close encounters of the death variety. That kind of thing isn't really my specialty, I just have a working understanding, but your reaction tells me I'm not far from being wrong."

He sat back down again. "I'm not going to pry either, if you want to talk about it later, I'll always be here, it's not like I'm going anywhere." He gave a little crooked smile and scooped up all the errant pieces of paper on his desk. "I mean give a guy who's saved your life a couple of times some credit here."

Gale's fingers absently brushed over Jinhai's ring, then over his wrist where the marks were; an idle gesture, as though he wasn't aware that he was even doing it in the first place. His eyes, however, were on Samuel, Gale's head tilted ever so slightly to the side in silent contemplation.

"It's...complicated," he said slowly, which was true. A faint redness appeared over his cheeks, lips pressing together.

"I'm not saying you haven't done those things," said Gale, an emotion something akin to either shame or embarrassment coloring his voice. He reigned it in, pulled back his usual stoic self, feeling, more than hearing, Jinhai's presence curling in his thoughts to reassure him.

"It's just - not something I know much about myself, that's all."

"Right," Sam shook the tin of cookies a few times to pick out a few more he liked and then passed it over to Gale again. "You don't have to entirely agree with me, but if I were you, I would try to record anything, even for just myself, I would think was remotely important even by mention or design. Some things don't look too obvious until you actually piece them together. Ask Lucky, ask Rep, ask anyone around for anything unusual, and then reassess the whole situation in a cohesive timeline. If something had the potential to really mess with me, I would try first with any clues left behind."

He nodded at the binder he had given Gale. "That's a good start."

Gale took another cookie, frowning slightly.

"Well, I am in Death," he said, with a touch of dryness. "I keep records of when I last brushed my teeth. But you're not entirely wrong, I...am trying to figure out where to go from here."

There was a pause, and then, with a slight frown, Gale said carefully, "Are you talking about the Death thing or are you talking about the Legacies?"

"At least you'll have fantastic dental records," Samuel chuckled, "maybe less on the daily life thing and more about observing others, talking to them, interacting with others, and you'll get a head start on your answers. It's amazing what people don't say when you ask them things just as much as the things they do. Take our boss for example. If you ask him something and he ignores you. It probably mean he's either heard it, the situation has been resolved, or you're chasing what he would consider a dead end of something 'your skill level'," he did air quotes, "But let's say you ask something or say something and he actually addresses that. That's to some degree, an investment in time, which means it has relatively importance. Or you have relative importance."

He gave a faint smile. "Of course not everyone is going to be so direct, but it gives you a foundation to work on. You came to talk to me right, people here don't mind sharing, as long as you're reasonably pleasant about it. It's actually strange the sense of community built up here. If you want to look into legacies and well your other problem, this island has just about as much as you'll need to collect quite a sizeable amount of information."

Gale's usually stoic expression flickered with something like annoyance, or maybe it was surprise, before it relaxed again. Truth be told, he did interact with others - mostly - and he wasn't sure if it was meant as advice, or as....

He didn't know. Though the information about Caelius at least set in stone what Gale had already sort of guessed about him.

"Not everyone likes to be so direct, it's true," said Gale dryly. The initial question had only been half answered, his fingers idly running along the tattoos on his arm, a frown of thought touching his lips.

"Well. Thank you, for this," he said, holding up the book. "It'll be useful."

"Yeah, let me know if you find anything interesting that relates to the book. Your specialization - it's artifact retrieval right?" Samuel looked at Gale very expectantly in a sort of I got your back way. "Maybe before you send any off to research, if you could provide a blueprint of all the artifacts you've acquired and seen and add it to your binder, we can also cross-reference everything under which legacy influences and the likes, where applicable."
