"It was a heart attack," Jordan said. "Mom has c-cancer." His voice hitched in spite of his best efforts, and he accepted the bag of chips with his head down, looking blankly at the windowsill and trying to get himself back under control.

"Hey.....it's ok. They have medicine and stuff for that." There were all those commercials too about hospitals, races, and charities that helped fight it too,

"I've actually read a lot of books about medicine. About what lives inside you. About how your body fights parasites and stuff it doesn't recognize." It wasn't specifically cancer, but that did come up plenty of times. However, most of it didn't spell good things for Jordan's mother. It depended on the type too.

"I mean, you're out here with me ready to fight off psycho kidnappers. She must be like you."

"I've been reading about it," Jordan said, and wiped at his eyes quickly, trying to pretend like he hadn't. "She's doing chemotherapy and stuff. The doctors say the chances are good if it doesn't meta, uh, metastasize." He tried on a slightly watery smile. "She's gonna be okay because she just has to, so she will. I'm praying too. Every night."

He smiled weakly, a twisting in his gut for not knowing what to say and yet being responsible for bringing it up in the first place. While Mel was hoping to go home to his family, Jordan had lost his dad and his mom was sick. He couldn't imagine what that must be like to have your family broken up that way, to just NOT have parents or just missing one. He didn't want to think about how that felt.

"The doctors know what they are talking about." He lied, letting it stay there, and hoping for Jordan. "If it helps, I can do that too. I want your mom and your brother and you to visit me. We can take my uncles boat and go swimming."

"That sounds cool. I'll write down my email and phone number." Jordan focused his attention on opening the chip bag, embarrassed. "What's your family like?" It was a blatant attempt to change the subject.

He went back to get himself some chips too and a bottle of water, moving to sit down on the blankets.

"Just - normal. My parents work. I have a older sister. Sophie. She kinda watches out for me and my brother, but she is still a girl so - we talk but we still fight. My younger brother, Chis, he is a pain in the a**. We don't really get along much, but I try to watch over him even if he doesn't want me to. I'm his older brother but he doesn't care about that at all" He popped the chips open and leaned back.

"Then I got like a uncle and aunts and cousins and my grandparents. Some of em live close by so we visit them during the holidays. Sometimes it's nice. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to go. They ask too many questions." He said, popping a chip into his mouth.

After a moment, Jordan came over to sit down on the blankets too. "What grade is your brother in?" he asked. "Mine's in fifth grade."

"One of my grandpas lives in town," he offered. "The other one lives in Texas so we don't see him so much. Do you have lots of cousins?"
PostPosted: Tue Feb 07, 2017 7:27 pm

"Chris is 9. So he's only in 4th. What's your brother's name?"

"Yeah, I got a couple. My one aunt only had one kid but he's got a lot of medical issues so they didn't have any more. But my dad and mom both had have brothers. My dad's family is bigger than my mom's is, but I like my grandparents from her side a lot more. I have 4 uncles. 3 from my dad and one from my mom. Greg. Tim. Carl. Donald but we call him Don. And I got aunts too. Two of em. Aunt Vickie and Sharlene. Everyone's got kids but Don cause his wife gets sick so they are like my aunts too cause everyone then is married. I don't get to see all of em all the time." He tried to think of a few. "There are a lot. We only had a few family reunions but it's hard to get everyone cause not everyone is in Maine and they complain it's a trip and with the snow its hard coming up for Christmas to my grandma's place."

"So yeah it's pretty big. When we do get together, everyone is running around and loud and the kids play games. Kiddie stuff through so I don't do it much anymore." He thought about it and leaned back. "It sucks though cause - like if anyone says anything EVERYONE knows about it. You can't cough without everyone knowing about it. It's like they can't shut up or something."

He looked over to Jordan. "What about your family. Have cousins? Anyone fun relatives?"

"Andy. He's 11 and he's a pain in the butt." It was spoken in an annoyed yet affectionate tone of voice.

He listened to Mel's explanation of his family, nodding at pertinent points. "Is it cool playing in snow in winter? It looks like it'd be cool."

"Tia Rosa, that's my aunt we're staying with, she has three kids. All girls." Jordan made a face; he would have gotten in trouble for the opinion at home, but there were no adults around and Mel was a boy too, so it was safe. "They're loud. And they're kind of mad at us right now because they have to share a bedroom so we have the other bedroom to sleep in." He shrugged. "My dad's got a brother and a sister, Uncle Brian and Aunt Jen. Uncle Brian doesn't have any kids though, he just lives by himself. Aunt Jen has two kids but she lives in Tennessee so we don't see them a lot." The last time they'd seen Aunt Jen and the cousins on that side of the family was the funeral, but Jordan was carefully not thinking about that right now.

"Well, sometimes. I mean, we get a lot of snow so it's cold a lot of the time, but there is a lot of stuff to do. I mean, you can't really go sailing, but we go ice fishing every year but just the guys. The girls get their own week while we go out and do stuff. There is also hockey season. Some kids do snowball fights and sled but after a while you just get stuck shoveling it all up all the time. I can usually make some money doing it though." He said, popping another chip in his mouth as he thought.

"The days are too short though. It gets dark too quickly."

"What's ice fishing like? I mean, do you just sit around on the frozen lake and wait for the fish to bite?" It sounded sort of boring, honestly, but that was Jordan's opinion of fishing in general. It wasn't active enough to keep his attention. "Some people go up into the mountains to ski in winter, but that's like, taking a vacation sort of trip. I've never been but I kind of want to try it some day."
PostPosted: Wed Feb 08, 2017 5:29 pm

"Hmm? Well, it's cold. You sit in this little cabin that sits on the water and you sit around a few holes and wait for the fish. It's not about the fish though. It's about talking. Just - ya know. Guys. Makes you just think, but sometimes it's a bit of a trap. Getting you out there to just talk about stuff you don't want to talk about, but everyone's usually okay about it. Just lets you catch up and not get.........overlooked." He considered last year's winter and wondered if it was lacking it's appeal or not.

"Being overlooked isn't bad though." He looked over at Jordan. "What do you do for fun? Go anywhere?"

"Ohhh." That made more sense. Fishing, in Jordan's admittedly limited experience, was an excuse for doing absolutely nothing while pretending you were doing something, but if ice fishing fell under the category of bonding things that was different. "Just like, family stuff. Okay."

He nodded a little to the assertion that being overlooked wasn't bad. He'd been the target of a lot of uncomfortable attention recently, when he'd really rather be left alone. He'd quickly started to learn how to react in the ways the adults wanted to see to get it over with faster so they would go away. That, again, was a train of thought that led to places he didn't want to be, and fortunately Mel had another question that he could think about instead. "I like biking, and swimming. I'm gonna learn to surf," he said. "When I can get Geoff to teach me. I read a lot, too. What do you do?"
PostPosted: Wed Feb 08, 2017 6:57 pm

Twisting the cap off a bottle of water, he shrugged. "Nothing much. Sometimes go out and just hang with people I know. Used to play street hockey a lot. I read more. People at school are being stupid anyways. Bunch of fakes." He said, not really wanting to get into it. He was progressively loosing everyone he knew, and it was hard to keep up his social status when he kept having panic attacks. "Watch movies and listen to music. I go swimming too a lot. Gonna try out for the swim team."

"What do you read?"

Jordan nibbled on a chip, less because he was hungry and more for something to do with his hands. "The swim team sounds cool," he said. "I hope you make it."

He ate another chip. "I like sci-fi," he said. "And old fantasy stuff, and history and mythology. And i like to read about science and stuff. How the world works. What do you read?"
