"Mmm," she made the sound before her mind had finished processing the question, then offered her a soft, telling laugh that she hoped was more reassuring than her words would be. "That's definitely because of you - I have had it happen once before with another, stronger corrupt. They do not fear you at all and sometimes do not notice my presence until I make it known."
There was a pause in her words as her attention drifted back out and away from the younger woman before she admitted, at last, "but there are some that challenge me, deeper in. They challenge everyone."
It was not long after her words left her lips that she knew they were close to the hollowed tree and her step, though nothing changed about her outward calm, was a bit more hurried. It seemed like ages since Alkaid had happened upon Labyrinthite at what appeared to be a memorial of his own making but as it came into view, it appeared relatively unchanged - the gnarled tree and the blasted land remained just where he had left it though he was, unsurprisingly, no where to be seen.
Maybe the ascendant had never expected to find him there at all because Alkaid's eyes were not looking at the ground but, instead, up at the withered branches for something else.
