14: All at once, for no apparent reason, you become dizzy and your vision goes black. You awaken less than 30 seconds later, sprawled out on the floor.

Lex gave a lopsided grin, taking a moment to study the picture for a moment. The women in the photo was youngish, about his age maybe. He shrugged a shoulder. “Lex, if you would. Sirrah,” He added with a hint of sass.
The whistled started him, making him look up. “Well, that was weird,” he said and frowned slightly before sighing, nodding as Lukas went forward. He was rather quiet for such a big guy actually. Hey, that was cool. A drop-ladder, he sort of always, wanted to live in a house with one of them.

And Lukas left his ax… what? Really? That made sense, but Lex could scale up without losing his weapons, because they were on his hands.

“Yeah?” Lex nodded, pausing, wincing slightly, feeling dizzy. “Mmh, the worse were the ones that were rabi” He trailed off, vision darkening at the corners and crumpled to the floor.

"Rabbits?" Lukas turned around just in time to see Lex fall to the floor. He cursed under his breath, performed a tight spin, and jogged to the fallen Chosen. Keeping the ax close, he dropped to a crouch beside Lex and reached out one large hand to feel for a pulse at the side of his neck. Finding one, only calmed him slightly and Lukas looked around, senses on high alert. He shifted his hand to rest on Lex's shoulder as if making sure the other would stay in place.

Lukas' brown eyes narrowed. Nothing seemed out of place. No sound broke the silence that had descended after Lex fell. What now?

Something brushed against his neck and Lukas' hand swung up and came down hard. He winced. Bringing his back around, he scowled at the smear of a dead mosquito in his palm. "What the hell?" he muttered.

9: The television comes on of its own accord.

Lex winced, mismatched eyes blinking open and closed with a small grunt before opening again. No, Lukas was really that close and pinning him down, large hands, lots of strength. Why the heck was he on the floor... oooh. "This haunting house has started to play dirty." He said finally, reaching up to run his fingers through his tight curls, checking his scalp and dislodging his hat.

"Can I get up?" He questioned and blinked at a blip sound and then a voice started to speak downstairs, talking about the weather? "So, haunted house is a thing, and staying on the first floor sounds like an good idea."

and roll three for Lex, care to roll the fourside to see if the spirit is nice or crazy next post ?

Lukas snorted as he drew his hand away from Lex's shoulder. "Yeah, it does," he agreed. Then he surged to his feet and retrieved his ax. Lex managed to catch the dirty look Lukas shot down the hall and at the house in general. Then he shook his head and offered a hand to the blonde. "Up and at 'em. I hope you brought something warm in that bag. I suggest we bunk down for the night in the living room. In front of the fire for best bets. We can start looking around again in the morning."

To be honest, it sounded more like orders than suggestions but Lukas knew he was in no position to lead a team. Let along another person. So he just gave a little shrug and turned on his heel after hauling Lex back to his feet. "I'm gonna get some shut-eye," he announced, heading down the stairs.

"Mmhm," Lex accepted the help up, a bit amused at the general dirty look Lukas was throwing around and slightly in agreement. Haunted house could bite him. "I'm up to that suggestion. And waiting for morning before looking again." Lex was a bit done with this.

"Did you want to change first?" He asked, following Lukas down the stairs, keeping a good grip on the rail of the staircase just incase the spirit tried to be an a** again.

"Change?" Lukas paused at the bottom of the stairs and blinked up at Lex with clear puzzlement.

Changing out of your clothing in a combat zone meant the risk of being caught unawares. Literally with your pants down. It made no sense.

"Of course not." He shook his head, turned back around, and strode to the living room. Within a few minutes, he had his sleeping bag unrolled, sat on it, and unlaced his boots. He tucked the laces inside before setting them beside the top of his bag. He stretched. "Think we need to set watches?"

"Cool, I call it then," Lex replied, jumping the last two steps to the landing and went to pick up his bag. "Mmh? Sort of doubt it, I mean it hasn't shown to be horribly vicious." He fainted, but not for long and it hadn't tried to scratch or strangle him. "Can do a reading to see if I get anything but I think we'll be okay. "

He gave a shrug and headed to the bathroom, changing into his pajamas and brushed his teeth before returning. He shoved his phone in one pocket and his brass knuckles in the other before rolling out his sleeping bag and sat on it. "So, do you believe in fortune telling? Cause I want to do a reading," Lex said bringing out the deck from the bag and shuffling it.

Lukas cast a sideways look at Lex before dropping his gaze to the cards being shuffled expertly. His expression remained neutral, however. Instead of reacting, he merely finished dry-brushing, tucked his things away into his ruck sack again, and shifted to slide into his sleeping bag. "Not gonna stop you," he finally answered. "Don't even know my zodiac sign."

That was a bold-faced lie but it wasn't like the knowledge made one bit of difference to his daily life.

Lex gave an amused noise and dealt the cards in pairs, two on top, two to the right, two to the left, and two on the bottom. "So, our spirit is the top and Death and Eight of Cups are the cards." Lex tipped his head, running a finger over the pair thoughtfully. "Heavy water elements and change, rebirth, the cycle. Something has changed."

He skipped the personal pairing, Lukas on the left and his own on the right to the bottom. "The Hierophant is the teacher, wisdom and advice and Six of Pentacles is a movement in the right direction, and success." He began to gather the cards back up.

"So, a hopeful fortune all told that this is not going to end up as a complete cluster. Not saying we are not going to get into a battle, but it shall lead to success."

ShortGreen
If you want Lukas cards just poke me, or lex he be happy to chatter.

Lukas managed a shrug before twisting to lay on his side and watch Lex study the cards. When he started cleaning them up, he made a vague noise. "You missed a few," he commented mildly. It was open-ended and hard to tell if Lukas had any real interest in the full reading. Even he was not quite sure. Cards? Tarot? Psychic stuff? Pretty much bullshit but you never knew. He saw too much superstition in his military days to dismiss it all. Besides Lex seemed to put stock in the cards and that was interesting from a personal perspective.

"And it wouldn't be my first CF so whatever," he added.

"Ooh, those were for us, the King of Swords and the Five of Pentacles were for you, and I had the Knight of Swords and the Page of Pentacles. You could say it is a teaching experience, King and Knight of the same suit spread out between two different people." He shrugged, and kept shuffling.

"They can be considered turmoil and upheaval, the swords suits is air and the pentacles are earth. They are contrasting suits. But I don't care to pry in your personal history and I know enough about my own to not be terribly surprised at it." Lex slipped them back into the deck, and tucked it into the duffel.

"But on the other side, both cards I drew could mean the restless pursuit of a new goal, they are both cards that symbolize movement, energy, and action."

"Huh." Lukas looked down at the cards again for a thoughtful moment. Then he lifted his considering gaze back to Lex's face. "Huh," he grunted again. "Action? That I can do."

He smirked before shifting back down into his sleeping bag. He rolled to his side, tucked his arm beneath his head, and squinted slightly at the other Chosen. "That's interesting, though," he continued. "I've never seen them used. Read about 'em, though."

"Little less conversation, lot more action, yes? You seem the type," Lex replied, grinning brightly as he set them aside. "Mmh, I'm better with coin readings, though I am getting the hang of tarot."

He slid into the sleeping bag, settling into the warmth and mmhm. "Sleep well," he muttered, relaxing. Hopefully they managed to get a decent night sleep.

Quote:
Part Three: Despite your experiences and potential fears, the quest requires you to spend the night in this house, and so you settle down to sleep. When you finally drift off, you find yourself in a strange dream:

It starts off as a mangled memory of a beloved summer vacation. A lazy day with something sinister behind it. Everyday actions are colored with an edge of something uncomfortable and unfamiliar, and a dull ache takes you over. Something is calling you to the lake, and so you follow the feeling, or a sound, or a voice. It seductively invites you to dive in to the waters, and you cannot fight it.

Cold water jars you awake. You find yourself at least ankle-deep in the lake behind the lake house, where an ethereal woman with hair the color of moonlight watches you with cold eyes.

"Yeah. G'night." Perfunctory as it was, there was a bit of warmth in Lukas' voice. He glanced once more at Lex, half-grinned, and then settled in properly.

He was out cold before the count of twenty.

Lukas felt warmth on the back of his neck and he nearly cringed away from it before he caught himself, holding still until he could force his muscles to unclench. One by one. Then he drew a deep breath through his nose and lifted his head from the cradle of his folded arms. Bright, glaring sunlight greeted him and he squinted into it.

The scent of water and greenery drew his attention to the right and he turned towards it. A lake. The slight breeze barely ruffled the surface. Oh, yeah. Mom and Dad had rented the cabin up at the lake. Family bonding time. He surpressed his snort at the thought. He was eighteen. He didn't need any family bonding time. He just needed to get the hell out of town, go to college, avoid all of the stress and annoyances of his family. Especially his precious perfect little sister.

As if the very thought of her acted as a summon, a feminine scream of delight broke the peace and quiet. Lukas groaned and rolled onto his back to blink at the white fluffy clouds dotting the perfectly blue sky. He already had to see her every day in that house. Had to see her perfect report cards and the invitations to her concerts and plays and everything. The fridge was about to collapse under the weight of her awesome-ness. Now she was building a perfect sand-castle. He just knew it.

If everyone else left, he thought, it would be a perfect day.

Just as his eyelids started drooping again, another scream pierced his consciousness. The voice was the same but the tenor was completely different. Lukas shot upright, his instincts those of the warrior he would become rather than the angry eighteen-year-old he was. In seconds, he stood on his feet, crouched and coiled, eyes scanning the area. The blue sky was gone. The sky was a solid screen of forbidding grey. Blindly, he reached for the nearest solid object, a branch on the sand, and turned towards where his sister had been playing in the water.

Nothing.

His stomach sank. Then it knotted and rose up to sit in his throat as he watched a small hand and arm emerge from the water, a dozen yards out. A bracelet glinted in a sudden spark of light. His sister. Drowning.

No, this was not how the day went. He had stomped over her sand castle while leaving from an argument with their father. She had cried. She had ******** it. Dropping the branch, Lukas flung himself forward towards the waterline. Within moments, he had made it to water deep enough that he could lay out and drive himself forward with powerful strokes. The cold water shocked his system and he cursed loudly before pressing his lips together against it, pulling himself along harder.

Something grabbed at his foot and he stalled. "What the ******** looked down to find himself standing knee deep in the lake beside the haunted house. "********," he hissed again. Giving vent to childish rage, he kicked at the water. Then he looked around to see if Lex had followed him or not. He hoped not. The kid really didn't need to find out his partner sleepwalked. Not that he ever had before. PTSD? Screw it.

"Lex? You out here?"

It was a year and a half or so after his father’s death. Enough time pass for it to seem proper for them to drop mourning the death of his father. Or seem to mourn, it was more of a social necessity for his mother then he or his sister. Lyra had pretended and perhaps had felt lost, she had more good memories then he had.

But it was bright, as warm as Michigan ever got in summer, and they had gone off to the local lakes. His mother in flowing tunics and maxi skirts, all patterns and patches and drapery. Lyra in her bikini and cover up, white knit dress and favorite sandals. He had run about in cut off shorts and wide brim hat, slathered in sunscreen and chased small minnows in the shallows and picked up water smoothed stones to skip.

Wrong though. The heat was stifling instead of pleasant, the sound was still and prickling. Silent, without the sounds of kids, nor insects and his feet did not splash or rocks clatter as he chased a something airborne and shiny in the shallows. He wanted to say dragonfly but it was too wrong for a dragonfly. To large and wings sharp like glass and sharp nail almost like it had a stinger. Flashing blues and greens in constant rotating colors.

Enticing and dangerous and he should leave it as it glittered away from the shoreline and he ended up with water passed his hips and dove forward to break into a swim to chase it further….

And woke to a yelp of cold and wet, and the expanse of a still lake… and Lukas?

Lex blinked, turning around and frowned. “You are out here to?” And how did he get here?
